[Now Art Directing| Take 5]

New info and a trailer has been released for the PC game Bone, based on Jeff Smith’s amazing comic. It has been revealed that developer Telltale plans to release four budget priced installments of the game, each corresponding to an arc of the comic. It sounds like the game is meant to be skewed towards a little bit younger audience, but Im sure it will still be entertaining to fans of the comic.

As for the trailer, its nice to see the game in motion. The screenshots have looked pretty flat, but in motion the art direction choice looks pretty good. The animation does look a little flat though. Still, it should be interesting to see what a developer with the history of Telltale can do with such a wonderful property. I guess we will find out in September.

1up has a nice article about the GBA, similar to Benny’s excellent Game Boy Retrospective. While they are a bit doom and gloom about the GBA, its a great read about what is in store for the GBA and how their is still life left in the little system.

It’s been a long, strange trip for Nintendo’s Game Boy family. Since its 1989 debut, the family of systems that began with a blurry two-inch screen in four shades of green has somehow dominated the market in defiance of technologically superior competitors. Canny marketing, affordable pricing and killer apps like Tetris and Pokémon have given a commanding lead to Nintendo’s portable moneymakers. Lynx, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, N-Gage: All have foundered before the unstoppable power of the Game Boy.

But it would seem the end is nigh.

None This Week

CoffeeMan’s take:
This week, Nanostray is coming out, the new Space shooter from Shin’en, the creators of Iridion for GBA. The game will have 8 levels, 2 player multiplayer, and highscore posting on the net through passwords. This is the only “must have” game of the week, July has been kind of slow, but no worry August will drain our wallets. ;)

That’s it for this week.

This week I picked up a bit of everything.

I havent gotten an issue of Ultimate X-Men for years. When it first came out, I loved the intense action and wide screen style storytelling. Eventually, my interest in the book waned and I stopped getting it. I grabbed this issue because I wanted to catch up and also because Stuart Immonen was pencilling it. Overall this was a pretty cool issue. It seems like the characters have grown into their own personalities, seperate from the stuff happening in the regular X-Men titles. Unfortunately, this is the last arc by Vaughan and Immonen, but Bryan Singer (yeah, the director of the movies) comes on after him. That will be something to check out!

As always, Fables was great. To be completely honest, the last few issues, while still good, havent hit me the same way the older ones did. Well, Willingham is back on track with this one, bringing the story back to Fabletown (the hidden Fable city inside of NYC). The arc not only introduces Willinghams version of Mowgli and Bagheera(from the Jungle Book), but also seeks to return a favorite character that has gone missing.

As for the other books, Finder, by Calra ‘Speed’ McNeil, is a very cool sci-fi sorta book. Ill defitenly be checking it out more often. Matador and New Warriors, while both looking pretty, didnt do much for me in the story department. Finally, Daredevil vs Punisher, drawn and written by David Lapham, of Stray Bullets fame, is a cool take on the characters that Im eagerly waiting to see played out in Laphams capable hands.

Behemoth, developers of Alien Hominid, have unvieled their newest project at Comicon yesterday. They were quick to state that the game has only been up and running for a month, but Im still excited to see what they can do. If they can bring great gameplay and total fun to their future games the way they did with Alien Hominid, Im there.

If Alien Hominid is a comedic take on Metal Slug, then The Behemoth’s Next Game is a take on Double Dragon. Or perhaps Treasure’s Guardian Heroes, what with all the stylized medieval art, four-player simultaneous gameplay, and RPG-lite leveling-up. But we’ll stick with Double Dragon for now, seeing as how the designers threw in a special parody of that game’s introduction at the beginning of the Comic-con demo.

In an interview with an American news magazine a few years ago, rock legend David Bowie made a comment that’s stayed with me to this day:

The really odd thing about America is the kind of Puritan tendency that still exists for people to jump on one side of the fence or the other when it comes not only to social issues but little things as well, such as proclamation of what kind of music one is ‘into’.

I couldn’t agree with him more. Whenever an issue of social importance comes up, I find it really funny how people, especially those in the media, like to jump on one side of the fence and start letting loose on those who disagree with them. This kind of battle has all but overtaken the gaming world recently.

I was checking out the recent videos of Bryan Syigers Superman video blog on Blue Tights. Its pretty awesome to be able to have a running behind the scenes deal like this.

However, watch episode 7, ‘The Call.’ Peter Jackson, who was filming King Kong got so fatigued that he called Singer and asked him to come to New Zealand and help him finish shooting the movie. How cool is that? And since they arent even working for the same studio (Warner Bros and Universal) this must have really been a freindship/respect thing as opposed to a list of options the studio gave to Peter.

Ah hah, they have been spotted. Those crazy DS owners have been seen at Comicon. The great part is, on CBR (a very respectable comic book site) they showed the above picture and had this caption:

Bunch a folk playing some handheld thing-a-majig.

I guess my educating will have to go both ways as I strive to teach comic book fans about Nintendo. Check out the rest of the pics, which dont have to do with Nintendo, but do have some crazy people in costumes.

Well, Ive seen most of this footage in video form, but its nice to be able to take my time and check out all the details. Originally, I was dying to see the Mario crew in Baseball uniforms instead of their street clothes, but ya know, this just works. And we get uniforms in Super Mario Strikers.

I looks like the awesome characters from Killer 7 will be given the toy treatment. Follow the link for some early, unpainted molds. Im sure these will most likely only come out in Japan, but they may be worth importing.

They are finally making a live action Transformers movie! Thats the good news. Heres the questionable part:

“Under the direction of Michael Bay, and with Steven Spielberg executive producing, we know that Transformers is going to be the kind of explosive action movie that is perfect for the height of the summer movie season. By staking our claim on the 4th of July, 2007, we ensure that we not only have the time to make this movie the way it should be made, but also to build excitement and awareness leading up to its release.”

Michael Bay…ugh! I mean, I guess the movie will have a lot of action and cool scenes, but probably not much else. But, Spielberg will be sorta involved, so its not all bad. And honestly, just giving me the chance to see Optimus on the big screen is worth the price of admission.

Plus you know this means there will be a game to coincide with the film release (please not EA, please not EA).
