With the launch of the PSP today I realized that, once again, Nintendo is missing out a key genre to help the DS in the mainstream marketplace. Sports.
More than any other genre, I think sports games are the key to attracting the mainstream gamer. This being the case, you would think Nintendo would place a great empahsis on either a) making more sports games or b) encouraging developers to do so.
We have seen Nintendo making some progress lately. They have been eager to team with EA to provide exclusive content to Nintendo fans. They have also announced Pennant Chase Baseball for the Cube, which is the first traditional sports title they will have published since NBA Courtside 02. Im hoping that this becomes a trend and we see more Nintendo published sports games in the future.
While the DS did have a decent sports lineup at launch, there isnt much in the foreseeable future. And leaving the sports games to EA probably isnt the best option. Madden was alright, and proves that the DS can handle a 3D sports game, but imagine if they really took the DS into consideration. Id love to see the ability to make your own plays by drawing them on the touch screen or call audibles into the mic. However, I dont know if I trust EA to bring these functions to fruition.
Plus, the Nintendo audience usually skews towards a more acardey experience, so why havent we seen an announcement for any of the Street or Blitz titles?
In the end, I believe that sports titles are a very important part of the gaming puzzle. I hope the Nintendo recognizes this and makes an effort to have more sports titles published for the DS. The future of sports games looks bleak for the DS. Fortunately, Konami is planning on bringing Winning Eleven to the DS.
