Accomplishments are cool. Making out with a crush, winning a contest, kicking some ass, nothing feels better than that those times that it feels like something amazing just happened. It might be a little lame, but I thought it would be cool to have a thread where we could post recent life wins. Anything works, just post something that made you feel a tad awesome recently, something that reminds us that the world can be a pretty cool place sometimes.
I bought a Canon 40D a year and a bit ago, and I've been getting more and more in photography ever since. Its cool to actually have a "mature" hobby for once (Or at least one thats viewed as mature, and I can tell the ladies about without them chuckling).
I've had a hard time keeping up with it lately though, with work and everything, it just always felt that when I would go out and take pictures, it was kind of a "Whats the point?" situation. It wasn't getting me anywhere.
That pretty much changed over the last week and half.
A few weeks ago, I randomly put some of my pictures in a city-wide photography competition. I didn't really think much of it.
Then I got a letter saying I won first place, with some money attached.
Completely dumbstruck.
Then, last weekend, I saw a local theatre running a 48 hour film competition. I thought "What the heck, I got nothing to do this weekend" and entered. I had this completely ghetto set-up where I'd connect my camera (That was never meant to take video) to my laptop and be able to film. I'd done film work in high school (Almost failed that course
), but nothing major.
I got some friends together, called in favours, got some extra equipment, and shot some video.
And then I won first place. Shocked.
Oh, and some local advertising guy gave me his card and told me to call him if I ever wanted to do some work for him. I was speechless at that point.
This isn't in any way me gloating by the way. Its me expressing how utterly and completely amazed I am that any of this happened. Its like the universe noticed that I wasn't doing too well, and shot out a "Hey, keeping doing what your doing, it just might pay off someday". I don't know if I'm actually that good at this stuff, or if I'm just getting lucky, but its been making me want to pursue it a bit further.
