Kickin’ it with Jason Ciaramella – C is for Cthulhu
H.P. Lovecraft is a classic author with a huge following. He helped to shape both the modern science fiction genre and his Cthulhu mythos continues to provide fertile ground for really cool games and stories. Oddly enough, a Cthulhu alphabet book seems to be a totally viable extension of the myth.
4cr: Hi Jason! Welcome to today’s Kickin’ it with. Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey, everyone! I’m Jason, writer of comics like GODZILLA, TMNT, and MAGIC: THE GATHERING. I love pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and making love at midnight in the dunes on the Cape. And I love New England (it’s true, I have a t-shirt that says so). And spooky stuff, but only if it doesn’t have anything to do with ghosts because I’m wicked scared of them. I also say wicked a wicked lot.
4cr: You and Greg Murphy are doing a Kickstarter campaign for C is for Cthulhu, a Lovecraft alphabet book. What exactly can backers expect from this project?
In a word: FUN. We hope this is a book that parents can read to their kids over and over and never get enough of. Greg’s illustrations are the star here, and I can’t wait to hear what the backers think of his incredible work.
4cr: Things are going great for the campaign since it’s already funded, and with 22 days to go, this definitely opens the door for stretch goals. What have you planned to do with the extra funds?
The first thing we’re doing is a rolling stretch goal that gives free copies of C is for Cthulhu to libraries for every $750 we raise over our original funding goal. It’s our way of giving back and saying thank you. On top of that we’d like to do things like spot varnishing the cover, and glossing the pages. Basically adding value wherever we can for the backers.
4cr: How big will the book be in regards to its actual size and page count?
It’s a pretty standard sized board book, so roughly 6 x 6 and 26-28 pages.
4cr: Other than the book itself, what other rewards can backers get for their pledge?
The most exciting for me has to be the T-shirts, but we have the poster of all 26 images, buttons, and digital bonus content available to all backers. We also have a few things still up our sleeves for later on in the campaign, so stay tuned.
4cr: I noticed there’s a free Art of Greg Murphy Sketchbook available for backers to download right way at a “backers only” update at the project. Why did you decide to offer this free reward during the actual KS campaign?
It’s all about value and making our backers part of the campaign from start to finish. This book wouldn’t exist without the backers, and we want them to be involved as much as possible.
4cr: We’ve got to take off before the minions of Dagon track us down. Care to say anything else before we go?
I’d really like to thank everyone who believed in this idea along the way, and all the backers who supported it. You’re all the best…yes, even you.
