4cr Impressions – Runner 2 (Vita)
It’s no secret that we at 4cr love the Bit.Trip games. But I have a secret. I…didn’t really care for the first Bit.Trip Runner game. I know, I’m crazy. What made me even crazier was the fact that even not having liked the first Runner, I bought Runner 2 the day it came out on the Wii U eShop, and ended up playing it to death. It’s a perfect “one more time” kind of game; the kind that has you sitting down for five minutes to play only to notice that an hour has ran, danced, jumped, and slid by. So I figured I was pretty much Runner’d out. I mostly figured I’d try the Vita version just to have something new to do on my sweet little OLED beauty. Results? It’s still awesome.
There’s really not a whole lot more to say about Runner 2 for PSVita. If you’ve played Runner 2, you’ve played it. There are no surprises here. It’s the same great looking, perfectly controlled game. Really the main thing the Vita version has going for it (aside from the obvious portability) is that OLED screen. I loved the way the game looked on my Wii U, and the Vita version looks even better thanks to the screen. The colors are all incredibly vibrant, and I never once had trouble with too much action on screen. I think that small screen size is another benefit of both the Vita and Wii U versions. When I try playing Runner 2 on my TV, there is just too much screen to keep an eye on, and I end up missing jumps or gold or kicks. When I look down at a smaller screen however, it’s so much easier to keep an eye on what is going on. Even though it looks great on the big screen the game feels like it was made for the small screen. It’s just one of those games for which too much screen is exactly that: too much. It’s a lot easier to focus on a small screen like the Wii U gamepad or the Vita.
If you already have the game on Wii U, then I’d say the Vita version isn’t really all that worth it, unless you want to play it outside of the house. However, if you only have a version of the game on a big screen, or if you don’t have the game at all, the Vita version is probably the one to get.
Now if you excuse me, I have to go run away another hour of my life.
