Things X 5 – October 21, 2013
I’ve been returning to the wonderful Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker thanks to its new HD release on Wii U that is likely being played by most owners of the console already. I consider The Wind Waker not only my favorite Zelda game but also one of my favorite video games. Despite having already beaten the game 2 or 3 times already, I’ve been lately really enjoying returning to the world of flooded Hyrule. Beyond its refined gameplay, bold art style and charming setting, I find that what makes Wind Waker so compelling is its little details, like these:
The perfectly perfect rupees!
I don’t know what makes them so fun to collect. Is it their perfect size, compared to the young Link? Or that little bounce they make before falling on the floor? Maybe it’s because they’re so plentiful? It must be the perfectly pitched sound they make when you grab them. But, for whatever reason, they’re the best rupees of the entire Zelda series!
Those big noses!
The character design in Wind Waker is gorgeous and having the game in HD makes the details of each of those characters pop out. One thing I like about the design is the noses. Many of the characters have big, large noses that just give a lot of flair (pun intended) to the people you’ll meet during your adventure. Check out this guy above for example.
This guy. Enough said. He makes losing a Battleship game more exciting than winning.
The silent nights.
Night falls, there is not a hint of a soundtrack, only the sounds of the ocean maybe a bit of your creakling boat. It gives the world you are exploring so much force.
The trap, the rat and his bell.
Early in the game, you’ll crawl in a tiny tunnel and you will likely meet this tiny rat that will send you back in the ocean. It’s a funny, surprising trick that nicely sets the tone of the game.
Don’t forget, you can drop me hints on my Twitter account. Also, you are welcome to send me a friend request on my Wii U, my Nintendo Network ID is Jorf-Jorf. My 3DS Friend Code is 5069-3920-3758. If you want to snoop at what I’m playing on PS3 my PSN ID is l_am_error. Have a great week!
