Stuff Vinnk Sent Me: Satellaview
The Satellaview was a satellite modem add-on for the Super Famicom (SNES) in Japan. It used a service called St. GIGA to deliver downloadable games, DLC for existing BSX carts, and even streaming voice acting and music for some games called SoundLink. It was a bit ahead of its time, and a precursor of the digital world to come.
Oh, and thanks to Vinnk, I have one. Boxed.
It is crazy-rare to find a Satellaview boxed and complete. When the St. GIGA satellite service finally shuttered around 1999, the modem was worthless. At least if you didn’t play or save any games anyway. The SoundLink titles? No longer fun. People were able to send them back for refunds, but because this was in Japan gamers had to take super good care of the units, and send back absolutely everything.
In the video I only show the unboxing and how to assemble the unit, despite the Satellaview being in our plans to cover on Famicom Dojo for a long time. We’er trying to think of ways to cover the actual content since a lot of it is hard to come by or just doesn’t exist any more.
