Kickin’ It With Jimmy Palmiotti – Forager
Welcome to another iteration of Kickin’ it With here at 4cr! This time we’re talking with Jimmy Palmiotti about his upcoming graphic novel Forager.
4cr: Hi Jimmy, and welcome to Kickin it with. Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?
My name is Jimmy Palmiotti and I am a comic book writer and creator of many things. I am mostly known for my years inking tons of marvel and dc comics, co creating the company Event comics and characters like Painkiller Jane and Ash. I currently co-write All Star Western for dc, as well as Batwing and Harley Quinn as well as titles for Marvel comics, video games and screenplays.
4cr: You have a Kickstarter campaign for funding Forager, a 60 page all-ages graphic novel that you’ve written along with partner in crime Justin Gray. What do we need to know about this new project?
Forager is our 5th Kickstarter project. The story is about family, both the Travers family who are at the center of the story and the human family as we look toward the stars with the hope of colonizing space. This story takes place in the near future where space flight is a commercial thing. Glenn and Joan, the parents, face a lot of the same struggles that modern couples faces as they deal with being overworked, financial stresses, and raising a child. The main adventure is that they take a family vacation to try to reconnect their relationship and with each other, but what begins as a relaxing cruise on-board a space ship becomes increasingly stressful when their six-year-old daughter Ellie begins hearing voices. The bigger picture is about first contact with an alien race and how we deal with it. The story jumps a number of years later as we follow the daughter and parents going on an adventure to another world.
4cr: So far, you guys have been batting a thousand with your Kickstarter projects. You already have 4 Graphic Novels that have been funded using this platform. One thing that make Forager different from your past projects is that this is an all-ages graphic novel. Why did you feel it was time to offer something that wasn’t exclusively tailored for Mature readers?
We really didn’t look at it like that, we just felt we had a story to tell in Forager and the story itself came to be an all ages story. We were not going out of our way to make it less violent or sexy, but the story itself was focusing on different subject matter that we felt we didn’t have to do to dark places with. The book itself is very optimistic and adult in nature, but again, it can be something a parent reads to a child, like all the best children’s books. We are finding because of this, the book is a much harder thing to get funded and taking longer than the past 4 projects. We are slowly learning what the audience out there wants out of us.
4cr How did you guys end up working with Steven Cummings for this project?
Both Justin and I have worked with Steven on projects with DC and Marvel comics in the past and we felt he was a perfect fit for the subject matter. The key to anything in comics is to match the right artist to the story and with Forager, we felt we hit that nail right on the head. He has the talent to not only tell the story, but his character work is wonderful. Add to it challenging studios on color and the book is a thing of beauty.
4cr: The main goal for the Forager Kickstarter has been reached, and there is still some time left in the campaign before it is over. Have you considered any stretch goals to continue bringing in new backers?
We have introduced a stretch goal for the digital and well as the print audience. For those backing for digital rewards, another book will be included if we hit the next stretch goal. For the print backers, we will be including a signed AMANDA CONNER print and we are letting the backers choose what they would like as its subject matter.
4cr: Can those that missed out on the other campaigns still get the Graphic Novels?
We have them all available in Digital format and some signed books at PAPERFILMS.COM. the last two books have not been printed for the mass audiences past the Kickstarter, so we are the only place they can be had.
4cr: Thanks once again for taking the time to do this interview. Would you like to add anything else?
I hope people reading this will have enough interest to go visit the Kickstarter page and watch the mini movie we made and feel this is something they would like to get behind. And pledge.
We want to thank Jimmy Palmiotti for his time, and we’re happy to see that Forager is funded! Be sure to visit the campaign to secure your copy since they will be printed on demand specifically for those that back the project.
