[E3] Next Nintendo Home System to be 3D?

June 17th, 2010

Iwata makes some statements that indicate that the next big Nintendo system could be 3D… if 3D tv adoption rates are good.

Hm, well…I guess that’s something I won’t experience for a long time then. :P I just got a new TV this year.

I thought one of the reasons they claimed to not go HD with the Wii was low HD adoption rates (though obviously console price was the biggest reason). I’d think 3D TVs would have an even slower uptake, though the 3DS will spur interest. The biggest problem with 3D TVs is that there are so many different technologies – polarized (special TV with cheap glasses), active shutter (high frame rate TV with expensive glasses), and the 3DS’s lenticular (the TV version doesn’t exist yet, but it will definitely be expensive when it does, though you don’t need glasses), and the differences aren’t even arbitrary like VHS vs Betamx or HDDVD vs Blueray, so the ‘format war’ will probably be even longer because the trade offs are legitimate. I personally got a 720p TV a few years back and hope to keep it around for another 5 years to maximize the quality and minimize the price of my next purchase.

Yay, just posted with my old username…

This sign in problem seems to be a recurring issue among us posters. I think the simplest and maybe only workable solution would be to have a pop-up confirmation dialog that asks us if we meant to post without logging in.

Hmmm, we will look into the login problem. Hold tight.

And yeah… It seems like a bit of a stretch, but then again, Nintendo didn’t wait very long to get into 3D in the portable arena. And from what Im seeing, it seems that 3D TVs also do 2D just fine. So, it might be one of those cases where games still play just fine in 2D, but have 3D capabilities. And later in the lifecycle of the system, 3D stuff will start to become more mandatory.
