Hello Player 1
Hero Core is a lesson in sweet, sweet simplicity. If you’re familiar with Daniel Remar‘s previous game, Iji, you know that he’s quite capable at crafting a great experience using a very retro style. If you’re not fond of the two-tone minimalist graphics or are put off by the typical shooter first impression of the game, try giving it just a few minutes of play time anyway. I quickly discovered that it felt very much like a strange lovechild of Zelda and a shooter where exploration, interesting boss fights, and upgrades were just as much a part of the experience as dodging tons of enemies and bullets.
Head on over to the Hero Core Site to get a copy of the game and, if you’d like, check out the trailer after the cut.

I would compare it more to Metroid than Zelda.

Yeah, I get more of a Metroid vibe than a Zelda one. I’ll give it a shot during the weekend.

I’ve been playing this for a few hours and it’s pretty addictive. It’s very much more metroid-y than Zeldaesque.

Bah! Does no one else see it?
I pointed out Zelda because of the variety of the boss fights and the screen navigation is very reminiscent to the original Zelda game. It is certainly reminiscent to Metroid in theme and with some of the enemy designs, but with the overall game design I saw more of the Zelda influence.

Anyone who enjoys the Hero Core music should definitely also check out Space Hymns and October November December.

This game really rocks my socks. I’ve gotten through the main game on normal and am currently attempting to beat the hydra in Annihilator mode. Well, not CURRENTLY currently. I’m typing this since I needed a little breather. Man, Annihilator is tough. So effing good.
