4 color rebellion GameSugar Toronto Thumbs Phantom Leap Tiny Cartridge Rising Stuff

Welcome to the new 4 color rebellion

Welcome one and all, to the newest version of 4cr. Nope, this isn’t an April Fools joke, although we did love the one we just pulled off. Nope, this is the culmination of a good two years of planning, designing and finally executing.

This design, while still rough, is our vision of the future of 4cr. A big part of the redesign was looking at not only how 4cr has evolved, but also how you guys and girls all read the site. It’s a combination of our posting styles, your commenting styles, what we think is important and what we want to be more important.

As you may have noticed, over the years 4cr has gone from an up-to-the-minute blog covering the latest industry news, to a slightly slower, more thoughtful posting pace. We have often struggled with our desire to satisfy readers with all the latest news and gossip, with our own desires to post longer, more in depth articles at a more considered pace.

With that in mind we have expanded the Newsfeed in a big way. Not only have we made it easier for ourselves to post quick little blurbs of interest, but we have also, finally, allowed you all to get in on the action. Now you can easily submit news to us and have it show up right on the site. We think this is going to be cool and we really hope you all jump in and help build 4cr.

With that taken care of, we will also have more time to focus on the big content we love. Ya know, podcasts, in-depth interviews, long diatribes, rants, raves, and the like. And with a better division of labor, we might even open it up to you guys to contribute longer articles, as some of you have already done in the past.

So dig around. There is a lot more to the update (ranked commenting, a big social community section at the bottom) that I haven’t mentioned and still a lot more to come. There are some really unsightly parts of the site right now (sorry forumites), but we wanted to get our new baby out into the world and see what everyone thinks.

So take a few days and weeks and play with the site. Leave comments. Send us feedback. We have some cool updates planned, but we want to hear your feedback. Like I said, a huge huge part of this redesign is to get you, our dear readers and rebels more involved. Welcome. Welcome to the new 4cr.

It’s a bit confusing to navigate, but I think given time to stabilize and after getting used it, it definitely looks much more suited to what I’ve come to know and love from 4cr.

oooooooo how many hearts do I get?

Von Sohn on April 2, 2010 at 10:45 am

I loved the old site and it’s layout, I won’t tell you otherwise; yet the new design is quite nice, and I can tell you worked really hard to do it.

As long as you keep the site as awesome as always, I mean, content-wise, it’s looks will be the icing on the cake!

Von Sohn on April 2, 2010 at 10:49 am

Sorry for the double post. I forgot to tell you that you should definitely put somewhere a link to the April Fools’ Super Awesome Wit DBZ and Stuff edition of the site…because, as it’s name says, it’s awesome (And I want to show it to my cousin…you know, when he comes back from a trip he made).

; )

A.J. Petix on April 2, 2010 at 11:27 am

Wait… what is this heart system I am seeing? :O

I really love the design and I can’t wait to discover all the nooks and crannies of the new site!

While I do think the front page layout looks nice, I have mixed feelings. I liked the old layout in which I could read all the content easily. Now I feel like, I am going to have to open multiple tabs to get that same content. On the other hand, I am happier that the news content is more accessible and actually makes me want to click the link instead of a text link with a blurb. Like I said, I have mixed feelings but I am glad that 4cr is kicking and the podcast is alive again.

24

Bob on April 2, 2010 at 1:22 pm

I share the same feelings with jnhan.doe.
Maybe it’s just because I’m still recovering from the shock of the awful YouTube redesign.

It’s a huge change, and one I’m definitely going to have to take some time to get readjusted to, but also definitely a very awesome one.

So essentially the Seal of Approval is like a positive rating and it shows us how many have done so?

1643

Nick on April 2, 2010 at 2:35 pm

The seal of approval will come into play in a future update. Make sure to vote on your favorite articles and soon enough you will see how we are going to use them.

Nice work on the new site design guys, looking good so far.

mumma on April 2, 2010 at 3:36 pm

I like the new concept and layout but the design is very unattractive. I think the spacing and caps on the H2′s are really bad and a little more color or contrast in all that grey would be nice imo. it’s very bland now

I dig it – far less blog-like and the community focus is a great shift in balace. Can’t have a rebellion without a strong team of rebels, on or off the staff.

Really liking the new look of the site. I posted now and again in the past, but seeing this new life put into the site has given me the inspiration to start posting again; keep up the great work.

Nick on April 2, 2010 at 6:06 pm

mumma, we agree that there is some tweaking that still needs to be done. We are hoping to put in dynamic fonts and cool stuff like that. Send us suggestions and we will keep working on it.

N Rumas on April 2, 2010 at 6:07 pm

This is unreal. In a very good way.

Churchy on April 2, 2010 at 7:13 pm

Really digging the new design. A bit bright, but I’m sure my eyes will adjust to it.

The new site design overall is great, but I really hate that the old banner isn’t still here. BRING IT BACK NOW!

N/A

flobo on April 3, 2010 at 3:56 am

Hey!!! Bring back that great april first design!!! ;)

On a serious not, I don’t think the new design is THAT good. What has happened to the good old list news in the form of a LIST style?! I don’t see it being wrong or broken so why fix it in the first place? I just happen to see the new design being less natural and clearly laid out. Sure it looks good and web 2.0ish but hell, all I want is a LIST of news ordered by their release… the latest on top, below the next, etc.

Maybe it’s just me but such changes alienate me as they don’t add ANYTHING to usability… I’d really love to see an option to get back to the classic look. Afterall, if done right it should just be a switch of stylesheet, right?!

N/A

maduin on April 3, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Looks too generic and sterile, where’s the personality? Where’s the style? Now the site just looks like it’s trying to be a “me-too” site.

N/A

D~N on April 3, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I can’t say I like the new design. The old design was incredibly streamlined, and all of the news was available on the front page. This design seems clunky, almost like IGN in a way. Aesthetically it looks better I guess, but as far as content goes, I can’t say it makes it easier to navigate at all. In fact it’s quite the opposite.

N/A

D~N on April 3, 2010 at 3:57 pm

^ forgot to mention one last thing. Is 4cr Lite still supported? I use my DSi to browse all the time and it’s a lot easier to load. Don’t forget about us on-the-go folks! :)

N/A

Edgar on April 3, 2010 at 4:13 pm

@D-N looking into it right now, thanks for pointing it out

Edgar on April 3, 2010 at 8:24 pm

@D-N I made it redirect to feedburner.
I’ve tested it on the iphone and dsi and they both work. also, feedburner will give you the content differently depending on your device! All thanks to the magic of the internet!

Shaun Hatton on April 4, 2010 at 12:13 am

Where’s all the “I like the little 4cr guy” comments? Haha.

You guys did a great job integrating a ton of stuff into this new design. I can’t wait to see how it continues to improve, builds the community, and rescues the president from some ninjas.

Well, look at that! I’m really liking the new design. Sure it takes some getting used to but it’s all for the best, right?

Ujn Hunter on April 5, 2010 at 3:10 pm

This is kinda confusing… I tend to like simple designs… loved how 4CR used to be honestly.

Site looks amazing on the iPad. Woot!

Lashiec on April 6, 2010 at 8:54 am

Lovely new design…

… but I have to complain about the RSS feed. Only a bit :). While it’s been improved in comparison with the one used in the old design (pictures!), I noticed that pretty much all the items in the “Newsfeed” section link to external sites, links that are not included in the RSS feeds. Would it be possible to include them from now on?

N/A

Edgar on April 6, 2010 at 8:57 am

@Lashiec I’ll look into it :)

PixelProspector on April 6, 2010 at 9:02 am

a lighter and much more accessible design… very good work! i like it.

I love this. The only thing is that I’m not finding it easy to get back to the homepage once I get into an article.

Nat, the easiest way is to click the little 4cr guy (did we decide on Rebellio?) logo area.
