Hello Player 1
In a curious and unannounced move, Nintendo is now listing Virtual Console and WiiWare titles in its US and Canadian online store, which can be purchased with real world currency.
Up for grabs are Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) and Pokémon Rumble (WiiWare) at $5 USD and $15 USD respectively. Once purchased, a download ticket number will be provided in order to download the game through the Wii Shop Channel.
No other details are available as to why these titles are now being offered in Nintendo’s Online Store and whether or not we should expect to see other titles being listed soon.
What are your thoughts, Rebels? Would you be willing to ditch the Nintendo Point system and instead spend the exact amount of money you want and redeem a code?

It’s not a bad alternative if they get more titles up there. I know some people who would like it more (the people who are always like “OMG! I HAVE LEFT OVER POINTS! ARGH!” in online discussions). I guess it is better in some ways than spending $20 to get a $12 game and having points left, though I don’t really mind the way the Shop Channel does things. It would make it easier for me to send a game to someone sometimes if I could just send them the download code.

I don’t know what the point of just putting two games on there though

They’ll probably take them down, claiming it was just a test, like the demo service.
*Sigh* Demos…

I guess this is nice because you can buy these as gifts even if you don’t have a Wii? I don’t really get how it’s useful for an active Wii store user, though.
Being able to just add points to your account would be pretty nice, since my main peeve (besides being forced to listen to Mario jump/bonk/coin sounds repeatedly for five minutes every time I download something) with the Wii Store is how it makes me reenter my billing info every time I add moneys to it.

That’s a pretty shy initiative…

it’s a shame that this is limited to USA and Canada. Buying points in some places is not as straightforward as in those two countries, so we are exposed to unfair prices. A solution such as this one would be ideal.

I would absolutely use it. Just having a decent online store connected to the Wii, like xbl has would be nice, even if it still used points.

I don’t know if you guys remember, but Amazon offers the Wii download code for World of Goo.
I’d really appreciate if they rolled this out for all titles. I often find myself buying Xbox content through my PC instead of the console. It’s just so convenient.
