Chime In: PlayStation Move

You’ve heard all about it, you’ve seen the pictures, and you’ve witnessed the backlash.

Sony’s PlayStation Move launches in the fall of this year, and for all intents and purposes, it appears to be a more technologically advanced take on what Nintendo did with the Wii four years ago. Its flagship title is a PS3-style take on the Wii Sports concept, and other launch titles cover the standard bases — party game, shooting game, fighting game, etc.

So what do you think? Is this something you find exciting, or is it too similar to what’s come before? Do you dig the lollipop design, or are you put off by it? Will games like SOCOM and LittleBigPlanet be enough to justify the estimated 100-dollar price tag? Chime in.

Chime In – Your Most Anticipated Games in 2010

I’ll buy it if some fun games come out for it. I guess I’m pretty disillusioned about motion controls after playing the Wii – I was super-hyped for Wii, then I was super-hyped again for the balance board, then again for motion plus, but nothing super fun came out for it.

I like the fact that this new one accurately tracks your actual position in 3d space, but I’ve heard it will have significant lag compared to the Wii controls, so it may not feel so good to use.

It boils down to a wait and see. I would love to have some great motion-controlled games and stuff; maybe this will be the tech that finally delivers, or maybe it won’t.

I’m cautiously happy to see this. I think it’s good that Sony sees that Nintendo 1up’d them, and they’re trying to follow that path. My one concern is that it doesn’t seem to be anything new, per se. It’s good that they’re improving the Wiimote, but is that all that have?

Sony does what Nintendid 8)

But really, I’m going to withhold judgement until I get to use the thing myself. Even if this is just a rip off who cares. I like the Wii remote and would enjoy seeing a similar device on the PS3.

The absolute position deal sounds pretty dang rad, and the demos actually got me more pumped than Natal’s promise of flailing on the couch with no buttons did.

Still looks like a sex toy. ‘Tho at least now it looks like a CLASSY one.

Sony makes a slick Sonyfied version of the Wii controller.
Seems like a good idea really. I can’t wait to try it but it also makes the Wii remote + Nunchuk seem somehow cooler as well…in the sense that the SNES pad layout has resonated down through the generations…seeing the Sony take on Nintendo’s idea makes me somehow treasure my Wii controller all anew.

From what it sounds like, the move is using a lot of the same color tracking tech microsoft played around with about 2 years ago in a free program called touchless: http://www.officelabs.com/projects/touchless/Pages/default.aspx

I really hope sony has it right this time, ninty needs to jump on a Wii 2 stat.

I’m cautious. The demos at last years E3 looked pretty slick, but i dont know if im convinced yet that theres anything ‘new’ enough about it to get excited, or inspired. Natal, on the other hand…even if that ends up being another eyetoy, I cant help myself in thinking up crazy things you could do with it, the thing has planted a seed in my mind.

I think they’re three years too late. It’s not coming with the console, so everyone that buys a console has to shell out another 60-100 dollars for the add on. Seems pricey, considering it will be compared to the wii and it’s going to almost double the price.

Unless they make it the only control option for the Last Gaurdiand, I don’t think I’ll have any reason to pick it up for sometime.

Right now my only need to get this is so I can play RE5 and it’s DLC chapters with the control style of RE4: Wii Edition. Other than that, nothing that good in the short term.

Nice dildo Sony. $100? Are you feeling ill? Are you mentally disturbed? $40 is the most I’d be willing to shell out for a Miitoo Sony Wiimote. And only if there are a whole lot more uses than RE5 played RE4 Wii style.

Same as Babble: too little, too late. Maybe not so little, after all it might be fun for some, but still, unnecessary use of resources to capture some of the casual players from Nintendo market.

when will we see Cooking mama on Ps3? with realistic looking food :P

9th Sage on March 11, 2010 at 4:31 pm

Well…I don’t see anything that seems very different from what Nintendo has already done. I’m not saying they shouldn’t do it, it just seems terribly ironic to me since I think I remember Sony blasting the Wii as a gimmick, then look, here they are with their own version of the controls that all in all aren’t that different than a Wiimote with Motion Plus.

I really doubt this is anything but an attempt to get some of the success Nintendo has seen the past few years unfortunately. I’m not sure of Natal either, but at least Natal seems like it’s fundamentally different and could probably do some things differently or better than the Wiimote (while the Wiimote probably would do other things better than Natal).

That actually sounds really disturbing, Edgar.

MAL on March 11, 2010 at 7:03 pm

Not interested, it just looks like more of the same so far with nicer graphics.

I hope this forces Nintendo to move up anything else they have under their sleeve.

Before I was just assuming Sony was just going to partially rip off Nintendo, but now that it’s finally unveiled I can say that I was wrong…

They are COMPLETELY ripping off Nintendo. Even down to the press pictures of four ethnically diverse adults pointing the controllers at the camera… where have we seen that before?

And if the $100 price point is true, it should be quite the spectacular train wreck come this fall.

the.maverickk on March 12, 2010 at 12:23 am

The sad thing is that this isn’t shocking, amazing or ground breaking. Even if the whole package is overall technically superior to the Wii remote, the Wii and it’s remote are well ahead of them.

I mean we are talking about Sony now having a more then minimal amount of games that will use the new controllers, as well as the initial 100 price tag. I wonder if they are going to bundle the new controllers with their systems now too… if so does that mean the PS3 bundle will go up to $400 dollars again?

At this point I don’t see how this will play out for them… I mean they have to compete with the Wii directly here. The Wii has 4 years, and well over 200 games that use motion controls (although how many do it extremely well is always up for debate)… and packaging a sports game similar to Wii Sports with the controller, isn’t going to be enough to sell it to people who already own a Wii.

Also there’s the fact that the Move controller isn’t simply competing with the Wii either… Natal is set to come out at the end of the year as well. It though in comparison will be bringing something different at least.

The truth is… with everything I’ve heard, if you ask me Sony will be at the disadvantage.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo reacts to these new motion controllers though. What are they going to do next? something new? Or a successor to the Wii? Also are they going to make a move soon so as to not be left behind as other companies start to encroach on their new found terf. Honestly if Nintendo was to announce at the end of this year or even possibly early next year that they have a new system on the way out with an even better motion controller to show up Sony…

Well that would land Sony in some trouble. Nintendo has a lot to gain if they have a Wii successor in the pipelines for release within 2 years.

I’m definitely waiting a few months after it’s out. Knowing Sony, they could release it and NEVER support it again.

I love how everyone just reads titles of articles and watches a few videos on youtube to base their judgement on something, instead of actually researching the product. Also, I’m loving that everyone is saying this will cost $100. Fact: Sony says this will be priced UNDER $100. Now if that means $99.99, so be it. Another surprise! This price would include the PSMove, Playstation Eye and a bundled software title. Where as a stand alone remote would cost much less. :x

A big question for the Wii owners who already spent $100+ on their controllers and peripherals… why would you want to rebuild another controller collection for the PS3 when it is extremely similair?

I think Sony is going to have some trouble tapping into a market that Nintendo has already taken over. Other than that issue, I can’t wait to try this out. Even if it IS a Wii with better graphics… That’s what I want.

N/A

Jon on March 13, 2010 at 6:58 pm

they’re attacking the Wii market segment. But the problem is, the market segment that wants this kind of innovation and revolution ALREADY has a Wii. The only people who will buy this are hardcore PS3 fans that will be like “It’s Sony so I have to buy it”.

The PS3 fans got their PS3 mainly for particular games, blue ray, or any of the other features. Nintendo had it right when they made the Wii and now that Sony sees that, they’re gonna try to take away Nintendo’s “different” advantage to draw down their sales for FUTURE gamers (but by that point, the next gen consoles may have already come out and Sony will have been too late.

That’s my two cents.

From gizmodo:

-What the name ‘Clown Penis’ was already taken?

-Apparently so was contrildo.

So in addition to the questionably named Wii and iPad, we now have something that may have been inspired from this: tinyurl.com/sonyinspiration? (the hitachi magic wand)

That does make me wonder… does it have rumble?

Fred on March 14, 2010 at 6:30 am

What I can’t understand is how Sony expects to compete in the same market as Nintendo with this. You need to spend $300 for a PS3 plus $100 for this device to play it.

So a Wii is half the price.

Considering that the market for this type of control is nowadays casual/family gamers, I don’t think Sony will have much success.

Other than that, Nintendo innovated, and Sony copied the idea. This has always been, and probably always will be, a “me too” device.

That said, I do have a small hope Sony finally uses motion controls for their full potential, instead of suffocating the market with casual/family garbage like on the Wii. Like so many others, I was so excited for the Wii…and so roundly disappointed that 95% of the games are lazy cash-ins, or that developers put in about half the effort into a kiddie/super-deformed-bobbly-head port of their “real” PS3/360 games, and then they complain there’s no market for 3rd party games on the Wii. They throw in a few motion gimmicks and call it a day, then cry when it doesn’t sell. It’s practically insulting. So Sony definitely could exploit that underserved market.

Even if it works perfectly, for me the novality of motion control has worn off. Give me a comfortable seat, a beer and a nice controller.
