I was browsing through the Google-hosted LIFE photo archive yesterday, and though a search for Nintendo turned up a measly three images, this gem was one of them. I love it.
I’m gonna say it’s emerald. :p I wouldn’t have even thought to look for something like Pokemon there since the page makes it appear like they only cover up to the 1970s there.
I got those for christmas one year in middle school. 97-98 maybe? The gengar was transparent. That must have been right after Yellow or maybe right after blue and red.
Hah, I remember that article. I always wondered why Poliwhirl was featured in Pokemon media when it’s not a particularly important Pokemon, and a middle-evolution to boot.

Pure gold. Or is that silver? Or Red? Or Green? I can’t keep them straight.

@Scypher: According to Bulbapedia, Poliwhirl is Pokemon creator Satoshi Tajiri’s favorite Pokemon.
