Dark Void Zero – The Missing Capcom Classic?

Like with so many other DSiWare games, I had no idea that Dark Void Zero even existed until a press release hit my inbox this morning. My ears (well, eyes I suppose) piqued up when I noticed this line:

To commemorate Dark Void’s humble origins, Capcom commissioned the recreation of the original 8-bit classic, now re-titled “Dark Void Zero”, on the DSi platform.

This would, of course, imply that Dark Void was originally in development for the NES. Imagine that – Dark Void could have been just as famous of a name as Mega Man or Bionic Commando. Sadly, just a little bit of digging reveals a more Matt Hazard-ish reality. No real 8-bit Dark Void existed, but an April Fool’s Day post from the Capcom Unity blog reveals the reality that could have been.

Along with the title screen pictured above, the Capcom bloggers also commissioned an 80′s-style box in the same spirit as those for Mega Man 9 and 10:

They also put out an 8-bit remix of the game’s title theme (both versions composed by Battlestar maestro Bear McCreary)

Oh, and if that didn’t get your blood flowing, they also put up a pair of animated sprites:

Honestly, I completely forgot about the April Fool’s post until a forum post pointed it out this morning. I was going to gloss over Dark Void Zero, but the music and box art have both totally revved up to play the thing. Have any of you downloaded it yet? Feel free to leave impressions below!

“Matt Hazard-ish.” Funny. That game had nothing to do with “retro” anything aside from its marketing. I remember watching some ads for it online and being very confused at the juxtaposition. I think “Matt Hazard-ish” should be the term used for all faux-retro games which come off as phony or otherwise unlikable.

@Showka – Brand new games can still be retro. In fact, older games you may call retro are actually classic games, unless of course they are retro in that they are styled after even older games. Then they are classic retro games.

it’s not bad has a metroid feel to it in that you have to find different weapons and keys to open doors
