I’ve been playing a ton of Valkyria Chronicles lately. It’s a phenomenal game in its own right, arguably the most important innovation in the Japanese strategy game in years, but what it really did was remind me just how much I loved Skies of Arcadia.
You know the whole “picture is a thousand words” thing? Skies of Arcadia is a game about hope, about exploring a limitless world, and this picture sums up why I love this game better than any rambling editorial (that’s not to say that I won’t bore you with an article some day).

One of these days I have to play this game.

Wow… Throwback. I really miss this game.

I missed this game on Dreamcast, but when Skies of Arcadia Legends came out for the Gamecube, I was on that shiznit like syrup on pancakes. I just beat it again this summer–and it’s true what they say. You really can’t describe the feeling you get from exploring Arcadia, and the drama of the royal court is just … ahhh, I have to play it again!

AWWWW YEAH. You just made my day. I LOVE THIS GAME.

I liked Skies of Arcadia for doing a lot of new things, but it did a lot of things pretty badly. I’d love to see a sequel, but for the most part I feel the original is overrated by some.

I’ve been wanting to replay this, but there’s really too many new games I want to play.

I had this on Dreamcast originally and it has remained one of my all-time favourite games. Hard to explain what makes this game so perfect but it’s something special for sure.

It wasn’t perfect, no, but one of the reasons I love it so is it’s world and characters. I mean, Vyse breaks a ton of the usual Japanese RPG cliches, for one thing. He’s not a whiny emo kid, and he’s genuinely hopeful, and tends to find the best in people.

One of the best reasons to own a Dreamcast back in the day. I’ll probably give it another go later in the month.
As for Valkyria Chronicles, it’s too bad the sequell will release on PSP instead of on PS3. Hopefully Sony will allow PSP games to be downloaded and played directly on a PS3 as they have done with the Minis.
So Greg, did you get the DLC yet? Me purchasing the game and Sega putting all their DLC and games on sale on PSN really lined up right and I ended up buying both extra chapters and the extra difficulty mode… but instead of paying $15 it was all for $9 which is why I decided to get the extra difficulty mode as well.

Nope, haven’t picked up the DLC yet, though I probably will when I finish the game.
I’m stuck near the end (secong half of chapter 18). The game has gotten tough!

I loved how you knew when a random encounter was going to happen… the Dreamcast started spinning up the disc loading… haha… I love my Dreamcast… :sigh:

It was a very silly and fun game.
I got to the last boss (the final ship battle) and he used the same 20,000 damage move TWICE in ONE turn against my 40,000 hp ship. Yet another game where I’ve gotten to the last boss and never beaten it.
It was definitely a fun experience though.
Ah, the spell animations… every one is great.
“Pirates of old… defend our cause!”
“Fire consume my enemy… Lambda Burst!”
“Come on… dance for me!”
ahh.
“You aren’t ‘zooming in’, are you?!”

Loved that game on the Gamecube. The high point was definitely the world. Geez, the world they created was just so enthralling despite the technical hurdles. Every time you gained a ship ability to travel to a new part of the world it was the world would just never stop growing! Also, the side-missions were so addictive! Only matched by FFXII’s hunts.
The big negative, though, is that the battle system is hard for me to go back to. After playing Tales of Symphonia and FFXII, going back to a high-rate random encounter “fight, fight, fight, win” battle system is difficult for me. At the time, though, it wasn’t that bad at all.

UJN Hunter: I remember that too! I hooked my Dreamcast up over Christmas holidays to play a bit of Jet Grind Radio and could not believe how loud that thing is when it spins the disc.

Back in the days I’ve played a demo version of SoA on my Dreamcast and I really loved it. So I’ve bought the full game and never played it - and sold it ’shrink-wrapped’ years later
And bought it again for the Gamecube, played it once and never came back… I really don’t know why, because I loved it during my first (demo)play ?! Maybe I have to come back and start again…

I fell in love with Skies of Arcadia for the Dreamcast and I now own it for the Gamecube as well. It’s my favorite rpg, and I’m not even that big of an rpg fan to begin with! I was really sad when those Skies of Arcadia 2 rumors never became reality. It’s the one sequel I want more than anything.
