Ubisoft has announced that the newest installment in the Prince of Persia series will be titled The Forgotten Sands, and is currently planned to release in May 2010. Like sand though the hour glass, this is not at all surprising.
But wait, there’s more.
Apparently this title will return to the Sands of Time storyline, featuring elements from the original series as well as “new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand.”
As much as I really, really did not enjoy the 2008 release, I’ll be a tad shocked if they completely retreat from the new direction that was established with that title. Long time fans may not complain, but jumping ship on the new storyline permanently would be bad pie.
Like so many curiosities lately, we’re left waiting for an exclusive trailer set to air during Spike TV’s 2009 Video Game Awards - Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 8 p.m.

I’ve actually been playing this 360 game a lot and I have to say, I love it. It’s definitely feels a bit on rails, so at times I feel more like Im playing an interactive movie, but it’s still fun. I do think that if the presentation and story weren’t so good this game would fall very flat. But luckily this game is the sum of it’s parts and it’s glorious. It’s a total experience and one that is great when I just want to casually game.

But wait, if this returns to the Sands of Time trilogy … what happens to our protagonists from the new storyline?!?? WTF? I want to know, dammit!

To be fair, Prince of Persia 2008 wrapped up pretty nicely in the ending. Not so much in a comprehensive sense, but more like a cinematic sense. A direct sequel following the same Prince would dampen the ending a lot, I think.

Honestly, while PoP 2008 had its problems, the general aesthetic and overall feel of the game would be a great match to the original Sands of Time. It shared a similar storybook quality with SoT that was sorely missing from Warrior Within and Two Thrones.
The three biggest problems with PoP 2008 were:
1.) “Play by numbers” - the gameplay sometimes boiled down to glorified controllable cutscenes. Some of the platforming sections could be breathtaking and exciting, but any scene that required on an abundance of the “magic power” moves became very static and left you wanting more. The ironic thing is that the few powers that gave you control of the Prince were even worse because those sequences almost always became far longer than they should have been. Don’t take this as getting upset at the “no death” thing, though - that was a great idea that is embarrassingly misunderstood.
2.)Combat - They need to stop caring about combat so much. Warrior Within/Two Thrones had decent combat systems that were marred by the fact that every battle took too much time away from the platforming. Sands of Time had simple two button combat, but it worked because you never had to worry about too much complexity. PoP 2008 tried to mash these two principles together and wound up with many battles that simply required you to chain a combo over and over again for five minutes.
3.) The alternate conversations break the flow of the game - Remember in Sands of Time how the Prince and Farrah would talk while you were running around solving puzzles? Why would PoP 2008 force you to stand still and watch the same talking animations over and over again for the exposition conversations? It was absurd that you couldn’t just start the conversation and then continue it while playing the game.
If they can address those three issues in the next PoP, I think they’ll be just fine.

@Nick: You don’t find the combat to be tedious and boring? Man I liked running around in the nice looking world but as soon as a bad guy showed up that I had to fight I’d want to turn the game off.

I agree with every point that Outrider brought up. It’s a fun game and one that I enjoy playing, but I see so much more potential in. I really hope the new game builds on this one with all of the concerns addressed and doesnt try to totally reinvent… they have a good thing going here.
