Expressionist Retro Game Art

It seems like every month there’s some new game inspired artwork going around that tops everything which came before it. That’s my sensationalist introduction to these impressive expressionist paintings of classic games by Brock Davis. Davis adapted the typical screens of Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, and Missile Command into the simplistic classical style of painting with rather successful results I’d say. He works as creative director for an ad agency, but his portfolio covers a variety of mediums and there’s more than one instance where his love for videogames is apparent.

You can check out these paintings and some more of his art on his Flickr account(there’s a neat image on there of a self portrait he made using nothing but items he created using Halo 3′s Forge engine) or head on over to his website to get a more formal introduction to his work.

I like the art. It’s right up there with those guys that did Criterion Collection inspired box art. :)

if anything, i’d call the pieces of art impressionist than expressionist. but yes, they are fantastic, and convey the essence of the game elements with simple brushstrokes.
