Atlus has just released an launch trailer for 3D Dot Game Heroes, which is great, because as much as I’ve been following the title I really have had no idea about narrative details and the like. Along with catchy phrases from Atlus such as “pure retro sexy” and “ultimate retro love letter”, the trailer suggests something rather awesome, namely that the Kingdom of Dotnia willingly moved from 2D to 3D.
Realizing this, I said to Atlus, “Seriously? Because that’s kind of awesome.”
To which they said, “Yes, the King decreed it, and Dotnia moved to 3D and it is very awesome.”
Catch the trailer after the break.

I think a lot of the hype for this game is riding on the gamer nostalgia. It seems to me that they based the majority of it on the gameplay mechanics of The Legend of Zelda (2D and 3D). :-/

I have to agree with Eddard on this.
I love what I’m seeing from this game. It definitely is riding on gamer nostalgia, but that’s not a bad thing.
My issue is why am I not playing a game like this actually featuring my favorite Zelda franchise originals. The graphics and style is wonderful but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a Legend of Zelda knock off with 3D graphics. I feel like 3D Dot Heroes is riding on the tails of a classic.
I only wish that Nintendo had done this first with the franchise which inspired the developers of 3D Dot Game Heroes to make it in the first place….. Zelda.

@THEMAVERICKK
Nintendo did kinda do this with Super Paper Mario instead of the Legend of Zelda.
But I have to agree, this game, as awesome as it looks, reminds me too much of the original Zelda game but 3D instead of 2D. I mean, c’mon, that beginning legend about the monster even LOOKS like Ganon. Look at how he holds the sword up… exactly like Link. The one thing I’m glad this company didnt rip on was the fact that Link is left-handed.
But then I also have to admit this game looks a lot like Dragon Warrior/Quest I in 3D. The main character is Blue

PS: I love this game, it’s awesome, but I can’t help the fact that it borrows off the nostalgia factor too much.

I’ve read a bit from people that have been playing it, and they’ve all said it’s pretty much Zelda with DQ styled characters. But it’s really good regardless.

Hey, if Nintendo’s not suing these guys maybe they won’t sue the 3D Link’s Awakening guy either.

THIS is what Zelda should have been in 3d! Sure, it rides on the nostalgia trend, but it also brings back a gameplay style that was lost in translation between 2d and 3d.

When 4CR showed a video of this game a while ago, I wasn’t too impressed. Again, I love the concept, but the actual presentation looks dull. Maybe it’s the lighting and shadows used in the rendering, but it leaves a lot to be desired.
Also, the game looks too much like Zelda without being Zelda, if you know what I mean.

I can’t believe people are griping that it looks like Zelda. Zelda is awesome so it is bonus points from me.

@Joe: People aren’t griping that it looks like Zelda, so much as that it looks like Zelda but is exclusive to a competitor’s console.
