According to a report from Japanese new giant Nikkei Shimbun, Nintendo will release a version of the DSi with a four inch screen later this year in Japan. The rumor of a large-screen DS for elder gamers has been kicking around for awhile. Looks like there was actually some truth to it after all.

We don’t have any other details right now, and it is extremely unlikely that this DSi has any other technical upgrades. This is aimed at adults with vision problems that would still like to play a few rounds of Brain Age. If you’d like to see the scans for yourself, someone has uploaded them here.

Before you guys get all excited over the larger screen, keep in mind that it doesn’t come with an increase in resolution. I honestly think that most DS games look better on the DS lite’s three-inch screen, so four inches sounds like blur city. Of course, I am a cranky old dude.

I wonder if this version will see release in the US? My guess is no, it’s aimed at a pretty niche market. Still, if Nintendo (America or Japan) makes any sort of official comment, we’ll let you know.
