Though Greg couldn’t join us tonight, he was good enough to make sure I posted the following scans from Game Informer for Epic Mickey.
After all the speculation, possibilities, and details, we finally get to see what all that incredible concept art was building toward. Needless to say, the 4cr crew is largely excited.
I’m honestly not sure what my reaction is yet. It’s not quite what I expected, but then I really don’t know what I was expecting.
Anyway, check out the scans below and have a reaction of your own.

I have extremely high hopes for this game. Let’s up it lives up to them.

Somewhat unimpressed. I was really hoping it would go in a much darker direction, and not be so cartoonish. Actually, you know what I was hoping for? It just hit me. A very Okami-esque art style in a much darker, Twilight Princess pallete. Not just the twilight realm, but the castle where Midna is from.

It looks extremely fantastic. And knowing how huge of a fan Warren Spector is of Disney and his previous efforts, I can’t wait to see how it plays. I’m dying to finish up what I’m doing and read the article. This is the most interesting looking game I’ve seen in a long while.

I’m a bit disappointed in the environments. I guess I’m just being picky, but I was really looking forward to a steampunk-esque backdrop like what we saw in the early art that was leaked way back when.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m still waiting with bated breath for this game to come out as I’m confident Warren Spector will do an earnest job it.

While I’ve been excited for this game since the initial concept art, let’s hope that the art choices in the magazine are as final as the art choices in the Bioshock issue of Game Informer.
What I mean is, less Kingdom Hearts-y, more Twilight Princess-y. I suppose we’ll actually have to see the game in motion to tell.

This looks really intriguing.

After having read the article and how amazingly epic(no really) the background story is and everything Warren Spector’s pulling from to create that rich world filled with Disney history, I’m really hopeful for the game. It seems like they didn’t only take time to remember the story, but are taking care to make sure there’s a hugely badass story to complement the gameplay. I was planning on buying this issue of Game Informer by the time I got to the second page of the article because I wanted to have a copy of some of the images used, but seeing now that the full article isn’t included in the scans I have to buy it anyway since I have to know every thing about this game.

The Phantom Blot? Hell yes! Spector could not have found a more perfect villain. He was such a badass in the old Disney comics, and I had almost forgotten all about him. I had a passing interest in this game before, but now I’m definitely following closer.

I’m very excited for this. I love the darker take on Disney after years of having the same sunny crap shoveled from Disney all the time. The twisted, slightly steampunk take on Disney could be a great yang to Kingdom Hearts’ yin.

I was anticipating a 2D platformer.
I can’t say I have any interest in it now.
jhgd - 10.16.09 3:46 am
JHGD: It eludes me how you possibly could have thought this would become a 2d platformer. Nothing pointed at that.
siro - 10.16.09 3:54 am
Donald Duck is a cyborg. That, my friends, is a win.
I wish the backgrounds were more detailed, like the initial sketches, but there’s still plenty of time before this will be released, right?

I was hoping for a way darker art style when I was looking at the concept art. Too bad that, while they’ll probably make the story suitably darkish, the environments remain this cartoony.
SpacyRicochet - 10.16.09 10:34 am
@SIRO: I heard some other rumors it’d be a 2D platformer, and the art somehow led me to believe it’d be an action platformer with hand drawn graphics.
Think Muramasa blended with classic Disney platformers, which in my imagination would be pretty much the ideal game.

Adding Oswald the Rabbit really surprised me (enough for me to actually post this). I can’t wait for more info on this now.

Can’t wait to get my next issue of Game Informer. Gonna read this article on the can!
game looks really cool to me.

I was looking for a darker, more epic Mickey, but that does seem a little unlikely. I was also looking for more steampunk.
tehub - 10.16.09 12:08 pm
I just hate how we get the infinite smile Mickey, kinda ruins it for me.
yanipheonu - 10.16.09 12:55 pm
@yanipheonu - he’s just really really happy to be back in a videogame
Jamie Love - 10.16.09 1:32 pm
I think I’ll need to see it in action because these pages don’t scream out to me.
Nat - 10.16.09 7:52 pm
Everyone who is let down by the colorful and cartoony looks of this game, keep in mind that this only shows the “It’s a Small World” level which in real-life is one of the most colorful rides at the Disney parks and we have yet to see this game in motion plus the quality of these scans are not that good(at least not to me).
So it is still possible that the other levels will have that darker and creppy art style most of you were expecting.
Also(since this game is still in works)as time goes on the visuals and the environments will look much better and more detailed then now for sure(what we are watching right now is very likely a early version).
That said, I did kinda expect to see something steampunk in this but either way I’am still impressed.
IronROB - 10.17.09 8:25 am
The fact that they’re bringing back Oswald already got me excited.
Vinnieg007 - 10.18.09 5:38 pm
I figured that once they bought Oswald The Lucky Rabbit back in 2006, that they would reintroduce him in something. never thought it would be in a game.
