3D Dot Game Heroes Is My Childhood Brought To Life

There are too many game developers out there to keep track of them all. Honestly, I haven’t liked any of From Software’s past games enough to follow their every move. Thus, this trailer is literally the first time that I’ve heard about their upcoming 3D Dot Game Heroes.

This trailer (embedded past the cut) is stunning. It’s like they entered the head of five year-old me and lifted out what my imagination pictured Legend of Zelda to be. I don’t have much to say about the game just yet, but it looks gorgeous and it seems like it’ll be a fun retro-style romp. Hopefully, we’ll get some impressions from the Tokyo Game Show.

Don’t know why, but this game reminds me of claymation so much.

Wow, they obviously idolize Zelda as much as I did as a little kid (and still do).

So many good games coming to the PS3.

I can’t wait for this. :)

I’m not as thrilled as you are, obviously. I think the art style is kind of cool, but come on – they’re completely ripping off Zelda, and to be quite frank, they almost certainly can’t compete with that series.

I wish they’d take this concept and even some Zelda influence and do something that is a little more fresh.

@Darren
We only have this small clip so you really can’t say whether or not it’ll be able to compete. I’ve been heavily disappointed with recent Zelda games (Twilight Princess and especially Phantom Hourglass), so I’d love to see more games attempt to improve upon the formula.

But yeah, it’s obviously a ripoff; there’s even a tektite hopping around.

But it could still be a great game.

This game looks like it’s gonna be so much old school fun, but even watching that video the shallow DOF blurring is making me naseous.

A.J. on September 16, 2009 at 8:41 am

That blur is definitely the only only thing I didn’t like either. I like this very much, however, in the sense that it’s using 8-bit music as well as sprite animation similar to that of the gameboy.

Lots of nostalgia, but the modern parts of this game make it a big difficult to want a PS3 so I can play this…

It’s weird how much they can get away with ripping off zelda but this looks like a pretty awesome game.

I hope it’s released here, and I hope it’s actually fun, and I will rent it. :)

This is the first game ever that has almost compelled me to buy a PS3. It looks beautiful in a way in which I wish more video games today did.

I’m actually really sad that Nintendo didn’t attempt something like this before a 3rd party company did. I mean they’ve always toyed with retro… I mean 8-Bit sprites used in Super Paper Mario, classic game references for Tetris DS, back ground figures in Super Mario Galaxy’s Toy Box Galaxy… they know 8-bit very well so I have no idea why no one there had considered making a game similar to this as well.

Mind you even if this game almost compels me to buy a PS3, it still probably be enough as I can’t bring myself to spend 400 dollars to play one game, as awesome as it is. Sure someone will chime that I will get the opportunity to play lots of other great games like MGS4, Bioshock, Little Big Planet, or Resistance or something… but I’ve seen those games and they never really were enough to convince me to shell out my cash, although LBP was a close call to almost giving in.

Anyhow this game looks amazing, I love it simply because it doesn’t try and be a movie-esque masterpiece. It is a video game trying to be a video game… an attitude I wish was carried on by more gaming studios. The only danger of this game, which has already been mentioned is how similar it is to Zelda on so many levels.

So even though it may look great and be fun to play and be very stylized, it lacks something that will define it from Zelda and other fantasy adventure games that came before it.

i liked everything but the boomerang, that just went over the line XD we’ll have to see if ANY of the gameplay is original before your argument is really justified, still, even if the gameplay turns out to be a zelda clone that’s fine, after all it’s a hard game to match. Still, the visual style is really fun :P

I think they could have taken the 3D/2D pixel concept and done a much better job visually. It looks… bad, actually.

I really like the concept though. That’s a really clever idea.

I will buy a ps3 just for this game. nostalgia is a powerful weapon.

Why don’t they give him a green tunic and hat and name it Zelda already. Looks cool, but with the boomerang and cuckoo attack, I just wonder how they wouldn’t have to pay some royalty to Nintendo, especially since the draw to this game is nostalgia for Nintendo’s product.

I also wonder if he can leave the ground or if it really is just a graphical look, though the physics of the smashed pieces makes me wonder if they would incorporate puzzles ala HL2 instead of the scripted block pushing events in all past Zelda games. When is the next console Zelda game coming out anyway?

overtninja on September 17, 2009 at 2:45 pm

yeah, this game might be a total rip off of zelda, right down to the music and the fact that that dragon is obviously aquamentas, and those hopping monsters are totally tektites, but it is really charming anyway. unfortunately, this is only the third game on the ps3 that has managed to pique my interest, so i’ll not be playing it.

i do like the use of camera focus, it really makes the game look like it’s made of claymation or something and is being filmed from up close.

This looks awesome. Nice art style. gameplay bits look fun. I honestly hope it rips off the 2d zeldas, they were fun and they don’t make ‘em like that anymore. except for minish cap, it was awesome.

ZaxCG2 on September 17, 2009 at 11:18 pm

Its kind of weird to take in what they’re doing graphically. Is it a great revitalization of 2D sprites or is it just a cheap way of doing 3D art? I don’t know if I like it yet… so I guess playing it would solve my woes.

honestly.. MGS4, SFIV, BlazBlue, LBP, and Mirror’s Edge were enough for me to buy a PS3… this and Last Guardian are making me feel too good about the decision lol.
