I'll second Grim Grimoire. Awesome game. As for Muramasa, I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival.

@Aaron Cohen - I haven't found any instances of slow-down. Admittedly that was aggravating as hell in Odin Sphere, and I had plenty of friends who refused to play it because of that, but everything in Muramasa feels legitimately fluid.

@jhgd - I guess I'll have to say it's the closest to straight-up action yet from Vanillaware. But it's segmented, in the sense that you'll be strolling along and an exclamation point will appear, at which point your character will draw their sword and enemies rush in to attack - and then using your sword(s) drains energy which can break them if you don't keep an eye on it. And then of course it's time to eat.

I know we always knee-jerk mention Odin Sphere, but I'd definitely insist that anyone who missed Grim Grimoire check it out as well - it's criminally ignored and stores were giving them away at one point.

I've read a lot of things from people who have the Japanese version of this that the gameplay is just horrible, and although the graphics are beautiful, the game is just executed terrible. It's quite unfortunate since I was looking forward to it too. :(

Is Muramasa a straight up action game, or is it pretty much Odin Sphere with a Japanese theme?

Because I really can't bear to play Odin Sphere. The art is positively astonishing, but the gameplay was so dull and uninteresting that I couldn't possibly get into it.

Does this have the same slow-down problems that plagued Odin's Sphere? I loved that game, but remember a few too many boss fights that were slideshows.

I would say that based solely on Odin Sphere, I have the utmost confidence in Muramasa's awesomeness. I remember playing Odin Sphere and sometimes I would just watch as everything moved. The artistry really is like nothing else and it's an experience that really helps games to stand out as a unique medium. Vanilla Ware is great, I just hope that they get enough support financially to continue their work.
