I’d barely had time to finish my first cup of coffee this morning when rumors and concept art about a Warren Spector steampunk Mickey Mouse Wii game dominated the daily 4cr thread and more than a few forums. The conceptual art is worth an equal amount of words and arguments. Is this an American McGee styled take on Disney? Or is this a serious attempt to reach gamers that are more attached to the iconic imagery littering this apocalyptic world than we might realize ourselves connected to? Perhaps most importantly, what good deed did we do to get both this and a trailer for Tron Legacy simultaneously?
Classic Disney properties have never lacked dark undertones, and yet seeing that rise to the surface so predominately here is enough to stop traffic. Any number of possibilities as to what exactly the game is about are open to discussion, with no one who knows for sure saying anything as of yet. But the discussions and arguments have been the best result on the day.
Every single day, approximately 2 trillion screenshots shoot across gaming sites, leaving gamers to argue that X looks better than Y while galleries overflow with images that don’t really add any information and melt into a pixelated bandwidth intensive blob of meaninglessness.
Conceptual art of this caliber offers insight into the development process rather than the marketing. Our imaginations are allowed to run wild with possibilities. The cynical and earnest fact is that the end result will rarely match the expectations raised today - and yet this doesn’t need to be a negative. Our imaginations should be unique unto ourselves, and we should be able to look at these images today and dream about any number of possibilities we want, which is a worthy distraction for the day if there ever was one.
More images after the break.

I’m looking forward to seeing Mickey Mouse step up and take center stage again. If he is indeed the main character.
Even though he’s the mascot of the company, it’s been years since he’s actually headlined a movie or even a short of any significance.

I just hope this is amounts to something and isn’t some fake. Also hopefully it’s something on it’s own terms (as opposed to being a KH spin-off, for example).

Thanks for showing me this.
It’s like my nightmares converged with childhood memories of going to Disney World… Which is a theme that should be explored, since I remember Disney World scaring the _____ out of me my first time there.
You think things are normal in life…
until you’re suddenly shot through a wormhole and into the depths of space.
Of course, its not a problem now because I KNOW that “Disney Magic” = a big budget.
Pretty darn sure its not fake guys… Its on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Mickey_%28Working_Title%29

@ZaxCG2: Considering that I could write an article about what my cat had for lunch and stick it up there for a while, it being on Wikipedia really doesn’t mean much in itself.
The concept art looks awesome. I seriously hope this gets greenlit for…something or another, I don’t know what.

-I think this should have WALL-E in it.
-Hope it comes out for PS3, this game needs to be beautiful.
-Man, Spaceship Earth!! I can`t see Disney doing that ever.

As much as I usually despise anything steampunk, these concepts look beautiful and display a world I’m really interested in exploring.
Ever since they got rid of Eisner, Disney’s been on a role of awesomeness.

Ahh yes, from this concept art I interpet it this way. There has been a nucular holocaust and you play as Mickey the lone survivor, so he thinks. He must travis the land looking for food and water to keep alive, looking for along the way any other survivors men, women, children or Goofy. Some that did survivors now are rogue punks bent on surviving themselves at all costs. In the end the game will have a message behind it on what man is doing to himself if he doesn’t change his ways.

The concept art does look pretty damn epic, but I’m sure if they even made the game it would lose all the authenticity of the art.
I hope they make it either way. :p
