I’ve been increasingly preoccupied with exploring how we can offer more video content through 4cr. And while I’ve been informed that we cannot yet afford a television station or the tools to hack into an existing signal, I have none the less kept busy contemplating how this might take shape on a recurring basis.
This first episode of Dead Pixels focuses on the wipEout franchise, a series near and dear to my heart - perhaps it’s an editorial love-letter. It involved reworking some previous projects in the attempt to lay a framework that we might use going forward - since it is my sincerest intention to continue developing episodes. It’s a little rough around the edges, but I’m optimistic that it can improve.
Dead Pixels
Episode 1
wipEout
Runtime 11:28

I really liked this- the writing was informative and insightful. If you’re interested in constructive criticism, I would suggest that you do not use the “Papyrus” font on the Dead Pixels logo for your next video. It’s one of the fonts that has become generally frowned-upon in the design community, joining the ranks of stuff like Comic Sans MS, Curlz MT, Chiller, Hobo Sans, etc. I think even a small font change would go a long way to making this a more professional-looking effort.
Otherwise, though, it was a solid piece that I found fascinating even though I’ve spent very little time with the wipEout franchise. I look forward to the next one!

Nice comment for the font Toby.
The first wipeOUT for the PSone was overseen by the Designers Republic, a British design agency. They have made all the font, logos, colors and such for the game.

I’m very grateful you made and posted this!
Constructive criticism:
1. Too much intro before you get to Wipeout. People have less patience for short-form video. 3:30 minutes of opening and intro before you even mention Wipeout is just too much for a 10 minute documentary. If this was a 40 minute documentary, that would make sense, but here, intro is 1/3rd of the whole video, and I honestly just skipped the intro after about 30 seconds.
2. Euggghhh…Papyrus. I’m not even in the design community, but it just grates on my eyes. Try something not normally in the Windows font family. E.g., http://www.dafont.com/ (google “free fonts”)
3. At first I thought the writing/narrative style was a bit wordy, but…it grew on me, and I think I like it in the end.
In all, I am looking forward to the next one! Thanks for making this–it’s clear you put tons of work into it, and you made something very good. So don’t take my criticism too harshly.

Oops, I should have linked to this specific link: http://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=302
Many “pixely” free fonts there.

Great work! I have a suggestion, though: Would you mind putting subtitles on the video? I know the video would seem a tad crowded with them, but it would make it easier to follow for people whose mother language is not english, like me!

I expected just a fan video gushing over the series, but this was a really insightful and interesting look at a franchise I’d never played before.
Can’t wait to see where Dead Pixels goes from here.

You might hear this over and over, but its because its true. You need to have a shorter intro… try to make it 30 seconds at the most. Also, the font you had WAS A SEVERE NO-NO. NEVER USE PAPYRUS. NEVER. IT MAKES ME ENRAGED EVERYTIME I SEE IT.
I’d be happy to make you a logo or anything to replace that jank.

@Fred, Toby - I’m always after feedback, so thank-you immensely. I really want to keep working at writing and creating as a 4cr community. Toby if you want to offer some more design / layout advice drop me an email!
I had a feeling that intro was way too long. I’ve always been a sucker for videogame cinematics, and I knew I should have trimmed it. Next time!

@ZAXCG2
A Dead Pixels Logo? Seriously? I’D F’N LOVE THAT!

Wow, very impressive. I was definitely expecting more of a fan/homage than a critical look into the series’ place in videogame culture. Going along with another comment above, I’d say i really got into the narrative argument later on, but at the beginning I was a little skeptical. I don’t think it’s fair to necessarily present a game as a product of just one time in culture. Obviously the sci-fi and empty industrial feel came from much more than just the 90s. You offered a lot of insights into the production of the game and where the developers came from. I feel like these things are supportable facts and relevant, but the stuff about the atmosphere in which the game was created (the stuff at the beginning) is a little on the weak side. Next time, feel free to delve into all the influences you see, otherwise you might find yourself repeating what the 90s were like in every video : )
And Please continue making these!

This was great and I’m eagerly anticipating the next edition.

Hey,
You mentioned that you wanted to highjack a Tv Station, well go check out www.livestream.com
I think 4CR should setup there on station for all the Dead Pixels videos to come! Plus you could throw on any other videos people in the 4CR community make for the site!
whataboutki - 07.13.09 1:45 am
The intro is too long
Kirk - 07.13.09 5:26 am
I just wanted to say that I really love Yoko Kanno, but I did feel that was on odd intro music choice. The end one worked well, but I’m personally too used to the first one as BGM.
Illegal Moonshine - 07.13.09 6:54 am
Nice stuff.
Could do well over on Retroware TV if you ever feel like spreading out to another website known for videos.
Kenofthedead - 07.13.09 12:54 pm
Nice start; I would have loved more of a retrospective over the PS1, PS2, PSP games (even N64 would be nice). Not enough love for 2097, barring the intro being shown.
I agree with the other comments - short punchy intro would be better. I would have also included the footage that kicked off the whole thing, and was talked about (see: Hackers).
Despite my comments above, good job so far. It’s like the Edge magazine of video articles!

I love wipeOut! Nothing like an exciting, butter-smooth futuristic racer to lighten your day.
4ndii - 07.15.09 12:20 am
That was one of the most eloquent, and well thought out commentaries I’ve ever seen. I’m glad that there are people who put that deep of analysis into the emotion that a video game can muster up. I hope this becomes a staple series of videos for 4CR.
Keep it up!!!

Very informative and well-thought-out deconstructive of why wipEout is so iconic. I wanted to like actually playing the game more (but the controls were a little too loose imho).
Looking forward to the next episode.

That was excellent! You must put it up for download. Now I want to go play Wipeout; even Fusion!
