In an interview with USA Today, Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned that Super Mario Bros. Wii will be the first game to support a new feature that we’ll find in upcoming games. What feature, you ask? Something called “Demo Play.” When you’re stuck in a certain area of a game, you can activate demo play and the game will play for you. Alright, it isn’t quite as silly as you might think. Demo Play won’t let you unlock new content, so it is more like loading a YouTube video or checking a strategy guide.
What are your thought on this feature? Should strategy guide publishers be worried?
Personally, I think I would use it for role playing games. It would be like watching a movie, the best part of an RPG is the story, battles get kind of repetitive. I wonder if the game can lose while playing itself?
source: Joystiq

Of course the games can lose while playing themselves, ever let the Super Mario Bros title screen stay on for too long? Also, I couldn’t help but experience déja vu over the title http://www.burntheinternet.com/2009/01/in-soviet-russia-game s-play-you.html

…why didn’t he just work on getting internet co-op going?
Lemcott - 06.16.09 1:37 am
It might be nice for rpgs, but what emulation has taught me is that what rpgs really need is a fast forward button.
peshue - 06.16.09 2:20 am
I don’t like the idea of ‘Demo Play’ because there will be no more challenge to play a game. If I’m stuck I will switch on the demo mode, and that’s it.
It might be a good idea for casual gamers but then I would suggest watching a good video instead of ‘watching’ a game.

most people I see commenting on this thing as if it’s the first time it’s used and it’s the end of the world. I think this is a neat addition, kinda like in Ikaruga, there’s a video on how to clear a stage, but it’s still hell to be play.
Like edgar says, this is like looking at a video game guide, but once the ‘demo stops, I think you’ll revert back to your original state

I think people are raging over this more than they should. Give nintendo some credit, this is just holding peoples hands on the way to the castle- once they ‘get it’ they’ll want to let go and do the rest themselves.
ALH - 06.16.09 6:59 am
your fucking joking. struggling to work out a boss strat? dont worry about figuring it out, just watch the video!
sobe - 06.16.09 7:42 am
every day something new to make you hate nintendo
sobe - 06.16.09 7:42 am
Sobe, its not like you HAVE to watch the videos, you can still choose not to take the hint.
If anything this frees nintendo designers up to use more abstract or bizarre ideas for boss battles without worrying that the noobs will get stuck trying to figure them out.
ALH - 06.16.09 8:01 am
you don’t HAVE to but why even build that feature in? It will deny the people who aren’t that experienced in 2d platform games the joy of completing a level after failing 15+ times at it, often enough to make you feel tense and shout out when you finally pull it off.
Noticed Nintendo has released ANOTHER clock on DSI ware too :S Why not just make the different skins are free download since the function is exactly the same as the system clock?
sobe - 06.16.09 8:25 am
I’m probably just bitter after a terrible first party showing for DS at e3.
sobe - 06.16.09 8:28 am
It just seems everything they do seems to be catering to casual players now, I can’t imagine buying the next Nintendo home console at it hurts after staying loyal and championing them for so long
sobe - 06.16.09 8:29 am
Starfi is great though, definitely has magic even though its easy, loving it at the moment. They should stick that team to work on a new ds Mario!
sobe - 06.16.09 8:31 am
@ALH has hit it right on the head. Now Nintendo can make a game that is challenging for people who love games that make them think, but not frustrating for those who just want to have fun.
Sure developers can already set difficulty levels, but that can only affect things like enemy AI or how much life the player loses when hit. Things like environmental puzzles can’t be scaled without changing the experience dramatically.
@SOBE I’m sorry. But the world is much larger than you. The fact that you’re still using “casual” as a dirty, “us vs them”, word shows your egocentricity. And I guess that’s somewhat ok. I mean, all humans are egocentric. But damning a company that has made and continues to make great game experiences just because they’re trying to increase the number of people that can play games is selfish and childish.
supadude5000 - 06.16.09 10:19 am
I should say “all of us are egocentric” rather than “all humans”. I’m not an alien. I can fall prey to the same flaw.
supadude5000 - 06.16.09 10:21 am
Some people are so horrible at games that they can’t even figure out things we see as really simple and easy. Not because they’re dumb, just because they don’t know anything about games. This feature is for those people.
“Should strategy guide publishers be worried?” - Yes, but only suckers are still paying for strategy guides anyway. Savvy people use the internet.
Simon - 06.16.09 12:34 pm
Nice catch there, supadude5000. They’ll never figure out your true nature.
Simon - 06.16.09 12:37 pm
And the easy-ing of video games continues.
amanaplan - 06.16.09 4:40 pm
These videos WON’T show you how to get the secrets or the collectible items.
This should be obvious but it took a while to occur to me.
Of course that’s only if they do it right - if they do include plenty of secrets and findables, and they don’t show you where they are. I think they will.
Or they could just put in an “achievement” for never using the video.
Simon - 06.16.09 5:12 pm
This topic always brings about the biggest complainers to the table.
I have no problem with this feature. It doesn’t beat the game for you, people have this idea that Demo Play will take over and beat the level… yet it’s been painstakingly made known that in fact all that happens is that a demo occurs showing you what they recommend that you do.
It doesn’t reveal secrets, it doesn’t unlock things for the player… the player must still beat the level them selves or solve the puzzle themselves. Skill isn’t taken out of the equation, it just eliminates the frustration certain players experience.
The real truth is Demo Play has been around for years… in the form of Nintendo Power, Player Guides, Gamefaqs, YouTube, IGN… all these things do the exact same thing. Basically with the Demo Play feature Nintendo is cutting the middle man out. People acting like they are making games easier need to take a step back and realize people were getting the answers on how to beat games long before this.
All they’ve done is made it so a person doesn’t have to know about a site like Gamefaqs to get a guide on how to beat something. Not to mention Demo Play only shows one possible means of beating something although any good gamer knows that there is usually more then one way to solve a puzzle and everything.
I think people need to lay off and realize that it really isn’t a threat of any kind. If anything it may be the feature that allows Nintendo to bridge a gap between the casual and hardcore gamers. I mean those Casual gamers who find a game too difficult because they are unsure what to do and get discouraged will now have an automatic means of getting some help. It means that they can make more challenging games as well for the hardcore… who knows maybe so hard they will find themselves using Demo Play themselves.
I guess a guy can dream.
Oh yeah and…
@SOBE
There were some awesome first party showings for the Nintendo DS, I mean Spirit Tracks? Golden Sun DS? Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story ? Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box? Heck even though it wasn’t mentioned there is Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver which I’m personally excited for… more so then I ever was for Diamond or Pearl.
Basically I think that’s a pretty strong line up.
I find it irritating always dealing with the whining and complaining of some gamers, not to mention this whole trend of “Nintendo being the company people love to hate” … one day they don’t have enough 3rd party support, the next there isn’t enough 1st party support… blah blah blah.
TheMaverickk - 06.16.09 5:38 pm
Mario+Luigi is already out in Japan. Spirit Tracks looks good but I was hoping for a suprise really. Golden Sun isn’t my cup of tea.
I guess it is pretty egocentric being angry at the continued release of clocks :p this feature may not be as bad as i first thought but i don’t think anyone can argue greed epitomizes Nintendo more than it ever has before. So much seems greedy and/or lazy nowadays. That said I am excited about Galaxy 2, and some of the 3rd party stuff upcoming on the DS looks great.
I was expecting announcements of some quality DS ware to make the system more appealing, hoping for a 2d Metroid. More unrealistically I wanted for a new 2d Mario game that wasn’t a sequel to NSMB or a new DKC.
All e3s ive been kinda dissapointed since the great year Yoshi’s Island 2 was announced
(I’ve never complained about lack of 3rd party support, I thought noone owned JUST a gamecube last gen? And if you did it was probably easier to pick up a ps2 than whine about 3rd party support lol. I would say its probably different people complaining about each point for the most party)
sobe - 06.16.09 6:02 pm
I don’t know what the fuss is all about… I mean, it’s a decent feature made for less-experienced players or those who don’t mind challenges. I probably won’t use it. I’m quite happy with what Nintendo is doing and how not only they’re trying to reach different audiences but how they’re trying to unite them.
It’s a feature. Not an obligation.
i_am_error - 06.16.09 7:38 pm
>greed
>Nintendo
>global recession
I’d rather have a ‘greedy’ nintendo that still lays a golden egg now and then than no nintendo at all.
Why complain about clocks anyways? Its not like making clocks is taking away from development of the next mario/zelda, they probably take a day to make a new skin, if that. XBLA makes you pay for the equivalent of desktop backgrounds and im sure sony has some similarly useless little novelty that they charge for.
ALH - 06.16.09 7:45 pm
There was a feature in Dracula X Rondo of Blood where you could buy videos of boss strategies with the money you collected in game! I liked it a lot
Alex - 06.16.09 10:58 pm
@ Sobe
Yeah that last part wasn’t directed directly at you but general whines that people had over the years. I’ve seen it all I suppose… and I suppose I’m just used to hearing complaint after complaint about something Nintendo related.
I can understand though that you expect quality games and such instead of these clock devices, but at $2 I would think they aren’t much of a major loss in money, and my guess is that it’s not a whole lot different then how the iStore sells apps. Mind you if people don’t like the clocks and calculator DSi ware, then it’s best they don’t buy them since then Nintendo will realize people don’t quite dig them.
As for the GCN, I was one of the few last gen who probably owned only a Gamecube. It had every game I could ever want really, whenever I saw the PS2 or knew people who loved the PS2, it was literally all the same stuff they enjoyed, GTAIII (and it’s spin offs), FFX-FFXII, Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo, God of War… I admit there were several games I missed out on that I wanted to play, like .hack// series, Mega Man X7+8, Ico+Shadow of the Colossus. Mind you those games still weren’t enough to persuade me to buy the system.
TheMaverickk - 06.17.09 3:51 am
I don’t understand why people have a problem with it. Do you HAVE to use it? No. It’s there, but if you don’t need it, don’t use it. Where is the problem with this?
9th Sage - 06.17.09 11:40 am
I don’t trust the casual gamers not to buy up the clocks by their thousands though, lol.
iStore has loads of free games/apps available for download I thought?
sobe - 06.17.09 2:50 pm
I’m not entirely in favor of this demo play mode, but the Space Channel 5 games had an auto-play mode too, so I can’t exactly condemn Nintendo for including it.
Kyattsuai - 06.17.09 5:02 pm
I think the feature is good. It provides people a choice that people can use “Demo Play” if people want. If you don’t like the feature, you can just ignore it and don’t use it.
