A nice discussion regarding Super Mario Galaxy 2 is going on over at 4cr sister site Phantom Leap. Rumas, like myself, is a huge fan of the original Galaxy and is looking forward to the second installment, but understandably has some questions as to the me-too nature of the game. This little quote by Rumas set off a number of amazing comments over at PL and two follow up posts:
As a tremendous fan, I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel…but one of Nintendo’s trademarks as respects its core franchises has always been to constantly pioneer in terms of both content and execution, never to tread the same ground twice. Considering what became of Mario 64 2, I’m surprised Miyamoto gave this one the okay.
Very interesting stuff. I’m of two minds on the whole issue. Clearly Galaxy was amazing and more of it is a good thing. In fact, I think with Super Mario Galaxy Nintendo finally figured out how to really really do Mario in a 3D universe. The mechanics in Galaxy feel like the most pure interpretation of classic 2D Mario in a 3D game. And the game is just so full of fun ideas and beauty. So I love the fact that we are getting more of that. But at the same time, I agree with Rumas that it seems like an odd move for Nintendo to do a straight up sequel like this.
But maybe, as is brought up over at PL, this can be read as a deep view into the new Nintendo. The blue ocean, casual game making, broad appeal, world dominating Nintendo of today. Head on over and read the goods and join the conversation and let us know what you think.

Am I the only one who saw the trailer and was like, “Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Awesome!… Wait, the bumblebee suit!? Noooooo! The bumblebee suit sucks!!”
Seriously, the bumblebee suit is cute, but it kills your ability to move like Mario. It sucks.

Hah, yeah you may actually be the only one. I love the bumblebee suit! But yes, it does impede movement. But it’s still awesome.

@Rumas: Did you also like getting hit by the mini-goombahs in Mario 3?
Carl - 06.08.09 12:06 am
I’ll be fine as long as extra lives are less common than coins this time around. Seriously. I never even had to check how many extra lives I had ever and could easily pick up three bonus ones right before every board started.

@Carl
I liked getting hit by the mini goomba’s in Mario 3… but that was because I thought it was nifty how they kind of hovered around Mario, and I always wanted to see how many I could get stuck to him.
@Squashua
I agree that the one ups are too crazy in Mario Galaxy… same with New Super Mario Bros. DS though too. They could make the game more challenging just making it that a one up was 100 (maybe even 200 star bits) star bits instead of 50. Or Maybe 50 coins (since coins were rarer in general then star bits).
That or they place one ups in very hard to reach locations in the game.

I don’t mind it, I ever look forward to it actualy.
First of all, I’m a fan of platformers in general and there is a lack of them these days minus ports.
Secondly, I want a harder Mario game. Galaxy was great, but with a few exceptions, far too easy to go through.
I loved Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels because they gave me a challenge, I had a sense of accomplishment after learning all my skills in the first game and becoming the master with Lost Levels, more so once I bought the Famicom version for NES/Famicom hybrid.
Galaxy 2, I want a challenge to test my talents in the Mario Universe and gain the same sense of accompishment I used to get in platformers before they all became easier and easier for all to play (Klona, Tomba, Mario Sunshine, Starfy, etc).
Besides, it’s not as though things are all that diffrent. Sunshine wasn’t that far removed from 64. It just had a diffrent setting and a Power Up that never left Mario.

I cannot lie, I have the same qualms with how this sequel breaks a certain trend of Nintendo philosophy. But I’ve learned that Miyamoto is a hard man to doubt… might make you wait or yank a title, but he delivers.
Seeing how Galaxy was the result of years without a 3d mario (since sunshine anyway) and had aspects of what was to be the following mario 128… he’s likely brimming with ideas still. And who knows just how far outside the box he might take this? Could be like the Super Mario Bros. series. Likely not like the Mario World sequels though… more a (wonderful) spinoff than anything.
Then again sometimes old routines do work. Think the N64 Zeldas. New… but multiples on a system nonetheless.
I’m excited but not overwhelmed just yet. Pokemon’s still my most anticipated.

I had the same thought about it breaking the Nintendo Philosophy, but at the same time, given what Miyamoto said this is mostly a result of them having more ideas than would fit in one game for the Mario Galaxy style of game.
I think it’s fun to see these other ideas come to life in a sequel…there’s also the fact that Mario Galaxy was amazing.

I definitely understand the disappointment of it just being more of the same - that’s how I felt too.
However, there’s something to be said about how a game’s title can influence it’s public perception. What if they called it “Super Mario Universe?” You’d probably see it as something more original, with a few ‘Galaxy’ references thrown in here and there.
I think it boils down to branding, really. Of course, Nintendo most likely kept the “Mario Galaxy” name in there for the same exact reasons most sequels are named the same thing: public recognition. On the other hand, what does the public recognize? Mario, or Mario Galaxy? Personally, I think Mario alone is recognizable, but Nintendo may think all the new, ‘blue ocean’ fans will only know Mario from Galaxy.
But really, I guess it’s just a name. I’m a little disappointed that the graphics are exactly the same, but as long as the game has a generally new-ish feel to it when I actually get around to playing it, I’ll be satisfied.

@Carl: I HATE the mini-Goombas! They drive me insane. I run from them every time.
N Rumas - 06.09.09 4:00 am
Super Mario Bros = Super Mario 64
Super Mario Bros 2 = Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Bros 3 = Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario World = Super Mario Galaxy 2
You know I’m right.
jam - 06.09.09 9:47 pm
@JAM: Maybe, but there was a *complete* graphical overhaul between Bros 3 and World.
With Galaxy and Galaxy 2…. not so much.
S - 06.10.09 1:58 pm
Not nearly as big as the jump from 1 to 3, though. Besides, World was the first 2D Mario game to be on a different console, and was the SNES’s launch title. Galaxy 2 is the first 3D Mario game to be on the same console.
And really, what’s wrong with Galaxy’s graphics anyway? Can they really be significantly improved at all, at least on the Wii?
jam - 06.10.09 5:02 pm
Super Mario Bros = Super Mario Galaxy
Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 = Super Mario Galaxy 2
You know I’m right! SMB2 was just more levels of the same!
Peter - 06.13.09 10:06 am
I agree with
Super Mario Bros = Super Mario 64
Super Mario Bros 2 = Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Bros 3 = Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario World = Super Mario Galaxy 2
that just seems so right!
sobe - 06.14.09 1:48 pm
I agree with
Super Mario Bros = Super Mario 64
Super Mario Bros 2 = Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Bros 3 = Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario World = Super Mario Galaxy 2
that just seems so right! (thinking about it in gameplay terms)
