Surprise surprise, the rumors were true. For the most part, we here at 4cr are not digging the looks of the device — Rumas thought ‘Sidekick of yesteryear’, Greg thought ‘butt-ugly’ — but we’re all into the idea of a smaller, lighter PSP. What’s your initial reaction?
Video after the break.
[Update] Official pics here, iPhone/DSi/PSP-3000 size comparison here. Also, it should be noted that the screen does not appear to be a touchscreen.
[Update 2] Check out a side by side comparison of the official model and the classic fan-made design here at PL. It’s remarkable how similar they are yet how different they look.

Ive never been a fan of slide-out devices. It always seems like an unnecessary design choice that actually ends up taking up more space than its worth.
Nick - 05.30.09 12:46 pm
I just want to know one thing: What on EARTH has become of Sony’s hardware designers? The ones who came up with classics like the Slimline PS2. This thing looks like a Sidekick when open, and an old iPaq when closed. Unbelievable.
N Rumas - 05.30.09 12:49 pm
Ehh, looks cheap, has poor detailing, and for big handed people probably really uncomfortable.
peshue - 05.30.09 12:54 pm
At least I’m not the only one that thinks it looks terribly ugly.
9th Sage - 05.30.09 1:07 pm
How do I reach nub?
RoboSheep - 05.30.09 1:25 pm
can I haz comfort?
jodyanthony - 05.30.09 1:31 pm
I never did like PSP, but at least now it’s good for some laughs! lol
what were they thinking?? DSi>PSPgo by a mile…
Now, am I mistaken in thinking that the old PSP had a 4.5 inch screen? now it has a 3.8 inch screen…
ggx2 - 05.30.09 1:57 pm
Sony’s usually great when it comes to design… usually. I can understand that they are trying to get ahead of the game by fostering a digital media device that must compete on price with the likes of DS(i) to grab consumers attention, but gee golly it’s ugly. I’d pick any number of the hoax mock-ups floating around the net over their design. If SONY wants to give a smaller screen then by god meet us halfway with a second analogue nub!
Brian - 05.30.09 2:15 pm
Sorry, but I’m not buying a system that doesn’t support physical media.
Being a collector, I just can’t pay for a game if it’s not in my hand.
jhgd - 05.30.09 3:04 pm
@JHGD: That really bothers me as well. I mean, I like the download services, and am even warming up a bit to Steam, but I want the option to have a physical game in my hands, and overall prefer this.
9th Sage - 05.30.09 3:29 pm
Why? It seems pointless… You can play Digital Download games already on the PSP you own now… Why would they make a slide screen? It seems completely unnecessary… Also why wouldn’t you redesign the one bad thing about the original PSP, the controls!?
Ujn Hunter - 05.30.09 3:57 pm
Let’s say some poor soul with a psp and a bunch of games actually wants this. he sells his old one to get this one, only to find out that he can no longer play any of the umd games that he already has…
ggx2 - 05.30.09 4:45 pm
@GGX2 then he’s a moron. The fact that the PSP-3000 is remaining on the market tells you that these two systems are designed for different markets. Don’t strawman this.
But the smaller screen size (down from 4.3 inches to 3.8) is a problem. One of the biggest selling points of the PSP is it’s much larger screen when compared to the DS. The DSi has two 3.25 inch screens.
I think the PSP-Go’s biggest competition won’t come from the DS but rather the iphone/itouch because people will group the downloadable software only devices into one heuristic branch. In that case it’s going to be the price point that matters. The Go will have to undercut the itouch (at $149) and should obviously try for the $99 point to really move units.

Im with you man!!!!!
claudio - 05.30.09 5:27 pm
PSP Go? I wasn’t aware that the last three PSP’s weren’t portable. This just seems like some already bite-sized snack getting endlessly rehashed so little kids want it.
Esteban - 05.30.09 5:53 pm
first impression is crap. psp 3000 is great. this looks like some crummy prototype reject.
Boots - 05.30.09 6:24 pm
So how long until that sliding screen snaps off? I give it six months.
@ ROBOSHEEP - The NeoGAF link mentioned that the PSP Go would be a “Premium Product”, so I doubt it’s gonna be any cheaper than the iTouch (or even the DSi).

APRIL FOOLS!!!
Oh wait, that’s in April.
Crass - 05.30.09 6:36 pm
I never say this, in fact I think it’s a really dumb thing to say, but…
fail
Simon - 05.30.09 6:47 pm
i’ll pass, barely play my DS as it is…
Eddy - 05.30.09 8:11 pm
Pretty ugly, if it had two analogues I’d maybe be interested, I can’t believe they’re still sticking to one…
TakaM - 05.30.09 8:23 pm
what the hell is that :O it must be a joke, surely?
sobe - 05.30.09 8:29 pm
ugh… seriously PSP 222222222222222222222
Stop with the PSP rehashes.
Churchy - 05.30.09 9:51 pm
I’ll wait until they release the inevitable redesign.
For now, i’ll stick with my 2nd gen psp which is awesome now that i’ve installed custom firmware on it.
toml - 05.30.09 11:42 pm
Wasn’t this thing referred to as the “PSP Go!”? I liked it a lot more with the exclamation mark. Also, I don’t think it looks quite as nasty you guys seem to consider it (it’s kinda neat in that it manages to be somewhat appealing despite its heinousness), but Sony really oughta hire whoever made that sweet mockup. This one:

SUPER pretty, eh?
Jake - 05.31.09 1:26 am
@JOSH
Someone in the marketing department is trying to confuse the terms Premium and Luxury.
Premium is a value added product, for example a Premium car (lexus) is better than a standard (kia).
A Luxury product adds no useable value, a luxury ring (diamond) costs more than a standard ring (glass) but it doesn’t do anything more or better.
In the case of the GO you’re losing screen estate, a UMD drive, and possibly ergonomics to gain onboard storage space, and a smaller form factor.
The Go is a much more specialized luxury, and is by no means a premium product.
Priced above the PSP-3000 I don’t foresee this doing much better than the GBA micro.
RoboSheep - 05.31.09 1:36 am
I see nothing wrong with the design. Isn’t it a bit snobbish to scoff at something like a sliding screen? Just because some other device had one some time ago? It serves an important function. How else would they fit all those buttons on the the device and makes it smaller? It looks fine. I really don’t see why people are reacting so negatively.
I’m not happy about the new screen size though. That seems a bit unnecessary.
Nik - 05.31.09 2:53 am
AS much as I hate the concept, the fan design looks too bulky. At least the Sony design will actually fit in your pocket.
rbelmont - 05.31.09 4:14 am
Wha? So the main new feature is that it can’t play any of my existing PSP games? Unless they allow you to download digital copies of your games that seems like quite a flaw! Even then, only one of my games has actually been released in my country; so the chance of my games actually being in the European PSN store are very slim and lite.
I appreciate what Sony are trying to do here though. This new device feels much more like a response to the iPhone than the Nintendo DS though.
Looi - 05.31.09 4:28 am
@LOOI
I really don’t see how they’d work out a download system that’d let you get the games you already own on the thing, because there’d really be no way to track who downloaded/transferred what game to which system.
Hardcore Sony fans are either salivating right now or complaining (and will end up buying it within a month of launch), but for those of us that just enjoy games in general (the largest audience), this thing’s doomed to fail. I mean, I suppose I can kind of understand them wanting to abandon physical media for downloadable… but they’re also abandoning their userbase. This has a smaller market than the Gameboy Micro, but at least that thing would let you play games you own.
jhgd - 05.31.09 7:40 am
Am i the only person who thinks its kinda cool? I mean, not so much aesthetically as much as it being nice and slim, with a hard drive so you dont have to take a million disks everywhere. I have no problems with digital downloads - the physical media argument went out of the window for me the moment i got an MP3 player, and XBLA/steam are pretty awesome.
I’ve been avoiding the PSP for many years now because of the battery life issues thanks to it having a disk drive. This diskless PSP is exactly what ive been waiting for to finally check out patapon, locoroco etc.
Hopefully ill actually have a job before the thing comes out
.
ALH - 05.31.09 1:49 pm
@ALH
I like the concept but I really dislike the implementation and it will prolly be priced out of my range. I want to hold it in my hands and know the price point before I pass any final judgements.
I’m indifferent on the realm of download-only software. I don’t remember when the last time I bought software in a box for my computer was.
I think that the PSP Go² or whatever it’s called will be amazing. This one however I’m more skeptical of.
RoboSheep - 05.31.09 4:22 pm
The PSP Go appears to be catering to a slightly different audience, so Sony really can’t go far wrong by continuing to manufacture the PSP 3000 for the rest of us. Really my only concern is that Little Big Planet is exclusive to the Go, that would make me a very sad bunny!
Looi - 05.31.09 5:35 pm
Just give us more freebies and more fantastic games for us to stay with Sony rather than with Nintendo, that’s all we are wishing. If they could give free games, then it’d be cool just like http://www.wowgoldpigpen.com/twittercontestform/ whose giving away 500,000 World of Warcraft Gold for free just by giving name for their Pig. So check it out for more details.

Good morning. What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?
I am from Burma and too poorly know English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “Amiodarone cordarone, pacerone.”
With best wishes
, Eli.

Personally I like the look of the new PSP Go, an additional analog stick would be nice but the more slimline design is a winner for me.
