High Voltage Unveils Gladiator AD

High Voltage, developers of anticipated shooter The Conduit and bad dudes, have given IGN a taste of their newest title. Gladiator AD is a 3D fighting game set in ancient Rome. Your gladiator will take on opponents in a style described as a mix of Bushido Blade and Fight Night.

What does that even mean? Basically, it sounds like you’ll alternate between slicing and boxing your opponents, depending on which character you choose. Each character has six basic attacks and a dodge move, and gamers with the MotionPlus addon will be able to adjust the direction of their attacks by twisting the orientation of their wrist. The developers have promised a large degree of customization, including a “rpg-light” upgrade system and upgradeable equipment.

Like The Conduit, I’m sure that Gladiator AD will be a blast to play. I just wish that High Voltage would hire some new artists. The studio has mastered the Wii, pushing its graphics beyond our expectations, but they have yet to put out a piece of art that hasn’t reeked of eau de generic.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you with the generic sentiments. It’s easy to overlook it with The Conduit, at least for me, but with this gladiators thing it really hurts how I look at it. Granted, I doubt I’d have bought it even if it didn’t look generic simply because of the genre, but still, wouldn’t have hurt if the art style was eye catching.

Oh well, maybe the other High Voltage game IGN is revealing tonight will be better.

I think it looks pretty good. But I do have a soft spot for anything related to Gladiators. Yes, it looks a little N64-ish, but Im far more excited for this than The Conduit.

I agree. HVS usually have a very generic look in their game. The Conduit looks great for a Wii game but the art direction is lacking – but the gameplay could be really really nice. Now, anything Gladiator is a turn off for me – but we’ll see. On the other hand, this team is putting a lot of efforts in their games and they are really proud of them.

Whoa, they’re on fire, aren’t they? But alas, The Grinder looks…generic.

The grinder looks good. Its not generic for the wii. Try getting more then 5 baddies on screen on the wii is a nightmare. Just ask Capcom (dead rising lol) they will testify. The art direction for the grinder is apporpiate for the setting and so on. I Hope its amazing. But in general I agree they should completely fire their art directors. THey have no real talent. Art direction greatly sells a game.
