If you happen to own a homebrew’d Wii, prepare to enjoy one of the greatest multiplayer experiences of all time. I’ve been waiting, and praying, for a Wii port of Super Mario War since I first learned about Wii Homebrew. Previously, I would play on a PC, not owning an Xbox or any of the necessary hardware to play it on another system, but now I get to play it on the big screen with up to 3 of my friends or bots.

And you can too!

If you are unfamiliar with Super Mario War, let me fill you in. It’s a 2-4 player competitive multiplayer game where you try and stomp, or use items, to defeat your opponents. There are tons of different characters (though all of them control like Mario from SMB3), items, levels, options, and modes of play. The gameplay is frantic and fun and the more people you have playing, the better.

As far as modes go, there’s a standard deathmatch, capture the flag, survival, king of the hill, and many others. One of my personal favorites is a mode called “Owned” where once you defeat someone, you own them and are awarded points until you die or someone else defeats them.

It’s a remarkably fun game and if it was released via Wiiware, it would be well worth the money, but luckily for you, it’s free! All you need is a Wii with the Homebrew Channel and you are good to go.
