Hello Player 1
Resident Evil 5 hits stores this week for the PS3 and 360, and Wii owners probably feel pretty left-out. Well, Capcom has got your back. They just announced the new Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. Darkside is, as you’ve probably guessed, a sequel to last year’s Umbrella Chronicles. Miss out on Umbrella? It’s a little different than your usual Resident Evil game. The Chronicles games are first-person lightgun shooters.
What’s new this time? The story of Darkside Chronicles takes place during Resident Evil 2 and stars Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. You’ll blast through zombies while filling in some of the gaps in the series’ backstory. Chronicles, like Resident Evil 5, is intended to be played cooperatively. The entire game has been structured around the presence of a second player (either real or AI-controlled). The developers have also added in a new motion-based “evade” system that promises to make the fighting more intense. Darkside Chronicles will be released this winter. We have a few screenshots past the cut.
That not enough zombie love for you? Capcom will also be releasing Wii versions of the GameCube-exclusive Resident Evil games – RE Zero and the remake of the original Resident Evil. Be warned though, don’t base your expectations on the incredible Resident Evil 4 Wiimake. These re-releases have been out in Japan for awhile and are basically no-frills ports for those of you that missed them on the GameCube. Still, they are cheap ($30) and are worth checking out if you’ve never played either game. No word yet on a release date, but I’d expect them by the summer.
Oh, and yes, you may assault me for using that pun in the title.

Already tired of on-rail shooters.

I’m not! This game looks really promising, and the graphics look really good. I liked UC, and I’ll be playing this one as well.

Each system has its strengths and one of those for the Wii is rail shooters.
There really haven’t been enough rail shooters, it just so happens we asked for them and developers decided to work on them. It’s not their fault they decided to debut them all at the same time.
For me, having a rail shooter on the Wii is like having a dollar per play arcade system in my home and that is fantastic.
Keep them coming, make sure they are good, and just try to leave out the zombies next time.

I’m somewhat pleased with the lightgun revival on the Wii (REUC, HotDOverkill, Dead Space Extraction and now this one). Game looks pretty good and the little info we have sounds very interesting. Still… I would’ve preferred a new RE with a controlscheme akin to RE4Wii soooo much more.

YES. Oh my god yes. I bought Umbrella Chronicles and two Nyko PerfectShots after spending a day at the arcade, and it was the greatest purchase of my life.

Yea, I have to agree, I’m glad to see more rail shooters for a system that was designed for pointing at the screen with controllers. Whenever I used to go to the arcade my friend and I would waste dollars of quarters on House of the Dead 2 (CarnEvil, things like that) and though I never got into TimeCrisis, I would love to see more of that on the Wii. Unfortunately for my love of Nintendo, I haven’t used my Wii since past last September, since I bought my XBox 360, and I think more rail shooters would revive my love for the company.

To contest I_AM_ ERRORS comment, I’d have to say that on rail shooters are still under represented in the console market, and really weren’t represented until the Wii came around anyways on consoles in general.
Yet of course people complain there’s too many Rail Shooters… but apparently people don’t complain about too many FPS titles.
Ehhhh… anyways though as for this Dark Chronicles news I’m excited, for several reasons. The graphics are a considerable step up from the original UC. Also it features a much more immersive aspect of play, the view points and action moments seem a lot more intense. It’s some welcome innovation to the genre.
So far the title seems in line from what I expected from a sequel. Following the story path of the alternate famed RE characters, Leon and Claire. My honest hope though is that the game will cover more story then just RE2.
I’m hoping that they will have different chapters, much like the first UC. I mean the original UC covered, Zero, 1, 3 and then had that extended final Umbrella mission.
I would love to see this game cover 2, 4, and throw in Degeneration story as another possibility. That would make for a really interesting variety of gameplay and mission I think.
Mind you a nagging thought in the back in my mind tells me not to expect this, and that the game will only follow the events of RE2. I think Capcom knows that this new offshot/remake series has potential on the Wii, so they may make a third title which will cover other aspects of the series.
Make a third game to cover RE4 and Degeneration, make a fourth to cover Code Veronica and RE5. In the end creating a series which allows Wii users to enjoy the entire RE series from a whole new perspective. Who knows, guess I’ll have to wait and see.

I never get tired of shooting zombies. An RE2 based one? Thank you Capcom~!
