When I first heard about the AMBX kit, I knew I had to try one out. To me, this would be the next step into full gaming immersion.
How well does it do the job? Continue reading for a hands-on video and my review of this kit.

First off, what is the AMBX kit? It’s a modular set of accessories including lights, speakers, fans, and more. The unit that I’m reviewing has everything - lights mounted on the speakers, the wall washer (which is basically a central unit where you connect everything), two fans and a wrist rest with built-in rumble. How does the AMBX enhance PC gaming? There is basically two types of support.

First, we have game that have been built from the ground up to use everything that the AMBX has to offer. The lights will light up when the games tell them to. The fans will start when you’re suppose to feel a strong wind. The wrist rumble will shake when it is supposed to. Of course, it’s up to the developer to make good use of these AMBX options. My specific test game for this was Farcry 2. The video below shows this support in action.
Then, we have games that don’t directly include AMBX support. Some measure of support can be emulated by the AMBX software. From what I could gather, this method averages the colors of half of your screen(right/left) and pushes that color to each of the lights. From my experience, I kind of liked this method better than the actual AMBX-enabled games. The emulation will often catch a difference in colors that perhaps the developers didn’t think of when coding it into the game. One example is the shadows - the AMBX software understands that you’re in the shadow because most of the screen will darken. In Farcry 2, I would walk under a tree and the lights would stay blue to represent the sky. The second half of the video will show a couple of games being run through emulation.
These kits also work while watching movies and listening to music. You can even program them to do certain things while you’re working in Windows. It definitly brings a certain mood to movies, I can’t believe something like this isn’t used in theaters. I’ve been using it to watch movies on my PC and let me tell you, it gives you a totally new movie experience.
These LED lights are able to display 16 million different color variations. The fans can spin at speeds of up to 5000 rpm. The wrist rumble… Well, that’s one part that I didn’t like about the kit. The wrist rumble feels like the inferior rumble that we got on the DS. It makes a lot of noise while only weakly vibrating. The fans are the same - they make a lot of noise when they start up. I’m guessing this is the reason why there are different variations of the AMBX kit.

If you already have good speakers, I’d recommend the Starter Kit. The Starter Kit gives you the lights, which are the most important part of AMBX. If you do need a good 2.1 speaker kit, grab the Pro Gamer Kit. This set will give you both the speaker and the lights. I can’t really recommend the Premium Kit, it is expensive and the fans and rumble aren’t really worth the cost difference.
You can get the starter kit for about 130$. The Pro Gamer for 150$ and the Premium Kit for 230$.

Wow, great review. It was interesting to see how the kit worked with games and videos not designed for it.

Bleh… I’ve seen this happen on other smallish websites. Instead of paid advertisements, they are paid to intergrate reviews of weird products into their regular content. It gets worse when they are forced to “review” things that are completely unrelated the the website’s usual themes.
Here are some more:
4cr-review-nzxt-whisper-case
4cr-hardware-review-tritton-ax360-headphones

Please be more responsible about posting these items and indicate that they are in fact paid advertisements. Thanks.

@misterm:
What the hell? None of these hardware reviews have been paid for. In some cases, the equipment may have been free, but no one made any money off of them.
If they have been given a good review, it’s because the reviewer liked them. There’s no monetary incentive, and the PR agencies that occasionally send these things can’t do anything if we give it a bad score.
Edgar could have completely trashed the kit if he didn’t like it. I read this review and watched the video, and I’m not really impressed with the kit. If I were reviewing it, I’d have given it a lower score. Whatever. It’s Edgar’s call, as he is the reviewer.
So, please by more responsible about making offensive accusations. Thanks.

MisterM, if you have nothing better to do with your time than insult a bunch of people that LOSE money giving you a site FOR FREE, I need to switch lives with you.

I wouldn’t mind the starter kit for behind my TV - seems like a neato if not “disco” kind of thing. I’d really only use it for music though. Who’s up for a Dance-Off at my place? We can even invite MisterM if he’s got boogie shoes.

Wow, thats pretty awesome. Never herd of it before, but it looks pretty damn cool. Very nice review
Ian - 02.07.09 2:37 pm
I’m leaving 4cr for this.
Michael Tucker - 02.07.09 2:52 pm
4cr is a **** site.
Greg - 02.07.09 2:58 pm
I started a new gamer news site where we talk about games and products that don’t exist, therefore its content can never be construed as “advertorial” or “paid advertisements” by people who don’t understand how advertising actually works.

I HATE THIS WEBSITE
mitch - 02.07.09 3:47 pm
Thanks for your comments misterm, but i’ve been covering some hardware review because some readers actually like them.
Also, if you’re referring to us only covering Nintendo, I’d like to point out that Nintendo hasn’t released anything worth mentionning in Months.
For you sir, I can give you a review of Personal Math Trainer, Nintendo’s latest DS game.
Edgar - 02.07.09 4:00 pm
I want to pick one up for my PS3, but I don’t know if the PC version is cross compatible.
lexxx - 02.07.09 6:03 pm
I think Blizzard made a mouse made of steel that was decked out with LEDs. If you really want to get some glowing going, then check it out.
It also has macros for WoW. Who would have guessed?

I think this review is informative. I enjoy knowing this technology is out there. I understand the high score, I mean this is innovative in that it is a new means of giving games another level of immersion.
Although personally for me I just found that the lights weren’t that sensitive to the subtle changes of on screen colour and such. I mean In general the lights seemed to stay white or blue-ish white more so then anything. This may be as a result of the fact that you tube video’s don’t always quite capture such things very well. It’s a smart idea but it’s far from perfect yet… and for some reason it remind me of the days when smell-o-vision was considered to be the next level of immersion.
This is a step up from smell-o-vision I will tell you though. I think this has potential but I’m not sold on the device in particular. Personally though the set up to me has some serious flaws… I mean in general any gamer who is immersed in a game probably won’t even notice the lights changing around the screen since they are going to be focused on the action more so then anything.
Or perhaps the exact opposite, they may find the lights to be distracting from the gameplay. Also there’s also the issue that you got to be in a dark room set up for this to be of any real use. Any room with a bit of light from a window would probably over power those ambiance lights.
Either way these are just my critical thoughts on the tech. Personally though I’m glad 4cr showed this, because I wouldn’t have known about it other wise. Good job guys, don’t take the flack from others.
The Maverickk - 02.07.09 7:18 pm
lexxx - It should be coming to the PS3 at the end of the year.
From the rumours i heard.
Edgar - 02.07.09 9:31 pm
Thanks Maverickk
I will continue reviewing this kind of stuff and games. it makes a good mix and reaches different people.
Edgar - 02.07.09 9:34 pm
I never even heard of this thing. Seems interesting.
If you’re sent something, why not review it? I’m always confused when people complain that something doesn’t “fit” this site. You guys have almost always written about whatever you feel like. I’ve been coming here for years and I’m still happy.
Tony - 02.08.09 3:23 pm
And we’re happy that you keep coming
Now time to work on the shelf post… hoping it’s better than last week
Edgar - 02.08.09 9:00 pm
This looks pretty intense, but I don’t really understand the fans. Are they supposed to blow towards you to like, make explosions feel more real, or give you a sense of speed in racing games? I suppose that would work…
Steven - 02.09.09 12:33 am
yep, they do. But I really didn’t like the feel of the fans. They were too noisy and didn’t generate enough wind.
I totally dig the light system though, and i’m getting it as soon as my next pay check comes in.
And to add to Maverick’s comment. You don’t really “notice” the lights when playing, they’re not distracting you from play. They just feel right, like they reflect what’s happening on screen.
You really notice that they were there, once you don’t have them anymore. The games feel different now that I don’t have it.
It’s weird.
Edgar - 02.09.09 1:42 am
They should make a keyboard with the same light system. And if someone does, I called it!
Deg - 02.09.09 6:55 am
Did you try LotRO with this at all? I’m interested in hearing about that.
Tony - 02.09.09 3:30 pm
the sad thing. LOTRO didn’t seem to be supported, even through the emulation.
They seem to push WoW pretty big though.
Edgar - 02.09.09 8:48 pm
If this were built into monitors, this might be interesting, but the fact that the starter kit costs as much as 19 inch monitor is crazy! It really is nothing more than a 4 or 5 computer controled rgb leds!
And I’m sure this is where somewhat where MISTERM is coming from. For something this rediculous to be given a 9/10 and gushed over… It comes to our minds that either palms are being greased or 4cr reviewers are bloodly idiots.
Maybe there is a selection of people who find these the best things since sliced bread. I mean there are people that buy the same madden game every year.
Michael the Great - 02.10.09 5:13 am
I’ve seen the TV’s with this built in, and to me its just annoying and distracting. Why the heck do I need extra glowing colors from the back of my TV or a vibrator on my wrist.
I won’t be buying one of these.
chogaijin - 02.12.09 4:04 am
A nice review guys and being a fan of amBX (and owning a kit) I have to give it a big thumbs up. With the recent news it will also be on the PS3 thanks to Sony signing a licensing agreement it will be interesting to see how things develop this year.
There could be some really cool PS3 game experiences if you add amBX and I know there have been some for PC having played most of the top released that are ambx-enabled.
For those that haven’t seen it in action you are missing out!
