While non-theater geeks may not know the difference between Rent and Spring Awakening, they should at least know who Andrew Lloyd Webber is. It is literally impossible to live your life without having heard the horror that is Cats. The famed songwriter has spent the past few years making appearances on reality tv and not writing his next musical. It looks like he now wants to expand his horizons (and his royalty checks) by bringing his musicals to the game market.
In a move that would best be described as “WTF mate,” PaidContent.org reports that Lloyd-Webber’s management firm “has been speaking with half-a-dozen international game publishers” about the possibilities for games based on his most famous works.
I’ll admit, I have no idea what to expect out of this. The most obvious idea is a SingStar-like game where you bust out your best baritone, but I have far grander visions. How about a political simulation where you work your way up through the ruling class of Argentina, set to the soundtrack of Evita? That not working for you? Alright, picture Devil May Cry in your mind, now swap in the Phantom of the Opera. Now toss in rhythm-based fights where you sing about your horrific love affair.
This is why I’ll never be allowed to make a game.

I don’t know who that is.
It is interesting to see this though. HOPEFULLY, it’ll be a legitimate game and not a simple Singstar cash-in. I think it would be neat to see what a musical writer could do in game form.
