Another day and another Wii port of a Gamecube game announced. I have mixed feelings about this situation. Obviously they are just cashing in on something that requires little effort and money, but I can’t help but get excited about playing the old Metroid Prime games with new Metroid Prime controls. And really, a lot of these games deserved bigger audiences then they recieved (Donkey Kong Jungle Beat comes to mind).
So yes, it is lazy and it would be better if they spent more time making new games, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about a Wii Mario Power Tennis.
How do you guys feel about the whole situation?

I say this stuff needs to happen more often. The idea that these games are seriously eating into development time of new games is silly. And most previews of the titles that are currently out are mostly positive. (I think it’s only Pikmin and DK right now.)
Besides, no one complains when movies are re-released years later for a special edition DVD with added bonuses and features. This is just the video-game version of that.

I think these are great. Rocktapus is right, these are basically “special editions.” They don’t take long to turn over, and there’s a chance to attract a new audience seeing as all these games are out of print.
Tennis and the Metroids will be mine on day one.

I can’t wait to play Metroid Prime again. I STILL haven’t picked up Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, hopefully the reissue won’t bunk up the price of the original on the auction sites, gotta get them bongos.

if you know me from the irc or from the forums, I’m a huge metroid fan. that being said I absolutely cannot wait for this.
also gives me a good reason to finally buy pikmin 1 and 2 instead of playing my friends.

I don’t know if you could call it lazy as all rereleases are including 16:9 and 480p, plus the Metroid Prime games have been on the top of many people’s Wiimake wishlists for a while.
For people like me who have never played any of the games on the current New Play Control roster, it’s very attractive to have these games be made available again; and in addition have those games look and play better than most existing Wii games at a $20 discount from those same games.
“Another day and another Wii port of a Gamecube game announced.”
As far as I know, no new games have been announced since the Prime remakes. What provoked this comment?

@Andrex -
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Mario Tennis, Resident Evil 4, Legend of Zelda: TP…
It’s not a huge number, but that’s at least seven ports of Gamecube games with updated controls.
rbelmont - 01.06.09 11:12 pm
I’m just talking about recent games, you kinda said out of nowhere, “Another day and another Wii port of a Gamecube game announced.” I assumed today was the day you were talking about.
And there’s been far more than that (Prince of Persia: Rival Swords, Rygar, etc. come to mind), but I thought we were supposed to be commenting about Nintendo’s New Play Control releases, not all of the Wiimakes in general.
Andrex - 01.06.09 11:23 pm
Um…hello?! Wii Motion Plus?!? As a real tennis player, this is a huge opportunity missed IMO. I mean, the concept was great! But I can play “waggle” tennis -right now- with Wii Sports Tennis. I wanted to play tennis with wii motion plus, put real slice or topspin on the ball and whatnot. *sigh* It was the game i was looking forward to as a Wiimake the most…even more than metroid prime. Heh heh, but not anymore, I guess.
Oh well, I’ll get metroid when it’s wii-made and be happy.

It depends on the game. Jungle Beat looks to be completely and totally unnecessary, and it’s said to be a bore on Wii. I’m glad I have it for GC with the bongos.
I don’t have much faith in Mario Power Tennis being very cool, either.
But on the other hand, I’m SERIOUSLY excited for Metroid Prime 1 + 2. Like, almost more excited than I am for any new games. I love the Metroid Prime series, but I always had a terribly difficult time playing with the GC pad…MP3’s controls, though, were incredible, and incredibly intuitive. I’m assuming the Wii-makes will incorporate some visual tweaks to bring the effects, etc up to MP3’s level — MP1’s water doesn’t look so good nowadays — and overall, I’m just really excited.
N Rumas - 01.06.09 11:48 pm
Yeah, depends on the games. I want to replay Metroid Prime, but after playing MP3 it was harder to go back to the old ones because of the controls. I did pretty well with them, but they didn’t feel right after playing MP3.
9th Sage - 01.06.09 11:53 pm
I’m with Joe and Rumas. As far as I’m concerned, Metroid Prime 1 on the Wii will be the best of the series. I like playing MP3, don’t get me wrong, but Talon IV, in my mind, captured the Metroid feel more than any of the locations in Echoes or Corruption. I want wiimakes of a few other games that haven’t been announced, namely Sunshine and Windwaker.
JonEthan - 01.07.09 12:26 am
Wind Waker I’d totally go for — loved the controls in TP Wii — but Sunshine I’m not so keen on. For me, it was utter perfection with the GC pad.
N Rumas - 01.07.09 1:16 am
I think the only game I’ll be picking up Donkey Kong, if that, and that’s only because I didn’t buy it the first time around.
Truthfully, I’m really not interested in buying games that I only bought a hardware cycle ago. I own everything else (sans Pikmin 1) they’ve announced so far, so this whole thing has little appeal to me. Especially if/when the eventual sequels for those games drop.
MisterSmith - 01.07.09 1:44 am
I think the trend is fine, I’m not not against it.
However, and I may be in the minority here, but I missed the run and gun auto-lock sensibilities of the first two Metroid Primes when I played the third one. I dig the series as a whole, but the Wii controls turned me off, and that’s the one I never bothered finishing.
Plus, all of Samus’ bounty hunting friends in the third one seems to go against the whole atmosphere of isolation that Metroid has always excelled at.
Ocho - 01.07.09 12:41 pm
Fair enough, Rumas. I was thinking primarily of aiming the FLUDD, and how that would undoubtedly be a bit easier if mapped to the pointer. That’s not to say it was hard before, but then aiming wasn’t too hard in Resident Evil 4 either, and I know I prefer the Wii version in that case.
JonEthan - 01.07.09 12:45 pm
Can’t wait for Pikmin and eventually Pikmin 2, hoping Chibi-Robo makes it over here too, and yeah, it’d be nice if Sunshine and Wind Waker came back as well, especially if they’re slightly different as Jungle Beat apparently is going to be. But I thought Metroid Prime benefited a lot from the lock-on stuff, and the Mario sports games just don’t do a lot for me.
Overall I think it’s a win, but I won’t be buying every single one of them.
raindog469 - 01.07.09 1:23 pm
I personally have no issues with the Wii-makes. To be honest they are especially great for the sports titles. The Mario Sports games don’t change much from one version to the next, so why make a brand new Wii specific Mario Power Tennis when you can port it with Wii controls and have it take less time.
The graphics were well done, enough that it could certainly compete with some of the more subpar titles on the Wii. It’s a lot of fun, and it means they don’t have to spend time developing a follow up version of a perfectly fine GCN version.
Some people think the Wii-makes are cutting into other new titles development time, but I think it’s actually doing the opposite, giving the developers more time to put into those high quality new titles. Instead of wasting time creating new iterations which likely wouldn’t be a significant increase to the original titles.
The Maverickk - 01.07.09 2:28 pm
The GCN was painfully ignored and I think they’re opening up more people to good titles with the things they like about the Wii thrown in.
I’d be surprised if more of a handful of people are working on these things. It doesn’t make me worried that more “important” things are being sidetracked.
Hopefully they’ll all turn out well.
Tony - 01.07.09 3:00 pm
Also, I’m pretty sure all the GCN games they’ve announced so far had 480p to begin with. That’s not terribly new, although in some cases widescreen is.
Tony - 01.07.09 3:00 pm
I sold my Wii ages ago and I’m at the point where I pretty much just ignore Nintendo software altogether so these don’t really matter at all to me. As long as I keep getting quality 3rd party games for the DS I’ll continue using that one piece of Nintendo hardware.
Steven - 01.08.09 1:37 pm
Pikmin with Wii controls?! Consider me sold. I couldn’t get into the GameCube version but I have a feeling the Wii port will.
SwiftTheRedFox - 01.09.09 12:26 am
Enough is enough Nintendo !!!!
You are out of my gaming interest, now !
I should get rid of my Wii !
