We know gaming’s become a financial juggernaut of an industry, but what are the actual numbers and how have they been changing? If you’ve found yourself wondering how everything stacks up, you know, statistically, then wonder no more. This easy to follow and rather insightful slideshow presented by Advertising Pawn shows the facts about what the games industry is worth and how online connectivity, digital distribution, advertising, and other trends within gaming have changed over the past several years. Some of the statistics in this presentation surprised me, particularly the one about the percentage of Wii users who are online gamers, but considering this is a commissioned report by an international agency I’ll take their word for it. Either way, check it out yourself and see if you’re taken by any of the information presented.

I’m wondering how they came to the online gamer percentages. Is this talking about people who own the system and identify themselves as online users or is actually based on usage of the system online?
Because in that case, I have no idea how 70% of Xbox 360 owners can be online gamers, but only 40% of them have a Gold account. A Gold account is absolutely required to play games online with the 360. I’m no percentages expert, but shouldn’t these two numbers be closer to one another?
Unfortunately I can’t seem to find any additional notes about how they came to any of these numbers.

The fact is that online isnt as big a deal as people make it out to be.
I mean, its big, but not the biggest enjoyment of gaming.
People who hang out on the internet are biased, but I know an xbox player who plays plenty of games, but not online.
Xbox still has alot of single player games.
Also, is the xbla also closed to silver members? SO you have to pay to go online to pay to buy games on their store?
Raised the price per game then. A failing of the service.
Also, more people might consider going online if they didnt have to pay for it. Sure, MMOs are big, but thats on the PC.
Different demographics.
You also dont need to pay to see demos. Theres basically things to do on the 360 online aside from game playing for the people who like solo gaming.
Microsoft as far as I know never gives out their online stats though, but this company may have paid for them, or found them in some microsoft report that we may have missed.

I have a strong suspicion that Wii online numbers are way up due mostly to WiiConnect24 features & channels. The Everyone Votes and Check Mii Out channels are technically online multiplayer games, after all.
If there’s something similar going on on the Xbox 360, then that could possibly explain the disparity between online and Gold gamers.
