Phantom Brave Port Coming to Wii

I don’t know how I could have missed this. Phantom Brave is my absolute favorite strategy game of all time and I should have been all over this. Apparently, Phantom Brave will see rebirth in the form of a port to the Wii. Personally, I would have preferred a DS version, but this is much better than nothing. I would have figured that they would just rerelease Disgaea again for the Wii over Phantom Brave, so I’m very excited to see the game’s rebirth.

For those of you who missed out on Phantom Brave, or opted for the less original (and less enjoyable, in my opinion) Disgaea for your strat-rpg fix, let me explain why it’s so amazing.

The main thing that sets the game apart from other strategy games is that you don’t play on a grid. Instead, you have a circle of movement around your character.

Another huge difference comes in the form of the confine system. Instead of just putting troops down at the start of a battle, you have to use the main character, Marona, to confine them to objects on the ground in her range. When you confine a unit to an object, the unit gains the characteristics of the object. For instance, a unit confined to a rock will get a huge defense bonus, but the unit’s speed will be severely hampered. Once a unit is confined, it has a limited amount of turns to act and once the turns run out, that unit can’t be used for the remainder of the fight. This will lead to quick battles, as well as battles where you slowly bring out new units.

And that’s not the half of it. There’s complete customization of units, weapons, and titles; slippery and bouncing terrain; a great story line; and a soundtrack that is almost unrivaled. Needless to say, if you haven’t played it yet and own a Wii, definitely check it out if it comes stateside. Who knows, maybe if enough people buy it, they’ll make a sequel!
