Spike’s VGA’s were last night, complete with a number of big unveils for the upcoming year.
Hit the jump to see what all went down.

The breakdown of the awards can be seen over here, and honestly, I think it’s a pretty respectable list. GTAIV as goty, Fallout 3 getting the nod for best RPG, Media Molecule getting props for generally just being awesome, so on and so forth. I’m a little surprised to see Gears 2 with the best shooter nod, given the technical issues.
A bunch of exclusive trailers were shown off, some definitely looking pretty great, and a few just a little perplexing. Good to see EA has given Brutal Legend a home. That Watchmen trailer kinda made me cringe.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Brutal Legend
Terminator: Salvation
God of War 3
Mafia II
GTAIV: The Lost and the Damned
The Watchmen: The End is Nigh
Dante’s Inferno
Fight Night Round 4
Gears 2 Combustible Map Pack

Bah, Spike’s VGA is all lies…. ok maybe not ALL lies but GTAIV should NOT be considered GOTY… not by a long shot… i also disagree with some other things but those other things are my opinion.

I agree… “LIES!” (oh, the irony)
But I love Brutal Legend, Jack Black, and Tim Schaffer, and when I say love, I mean in the not-so-healthy kinda way :/
I also agree with Matt about the Watchmen trailer, if I only they based it after the comic book directly instead of the movie based on the comic book, perhaps then it would have some chance.

All I can really say about the Watchmen game is that I’m surprised it’s a downloadable title.
Dante’s Inferno, based on the tiny bit we’ve seen, looks ridiculous. If you want to make some action-based title and use some of the layers of Hell the book used then fine… who’s going to sue you over that? But to name it after the book? It just seems out of leftfield and I’m not seeing the need for it.
Brutal Legend looked awesome. Can’t wait for that one.

Dante’s Inferno is going to blow massive chunks filled with the cries of a million people, all of whom are orphaned children having their toenails being gnawed off by crabs with amputated legs.
Y’all with me on this one?

I, personally, would not refer to Mediamolecule as “awesome,” seeing as how Mark Healey founded the company using money he got by selling Rag Doll Kung Fu, a game he released with promises of additional features (to this day, the main menu has a greyed-out option saying “World Editor - coming soon”) that he never delivered on. He completely abandoned his original supporters and never delivered on promised features, and I completely resent him for it.

And to make it worse, now they’re making a PS3 version of RDKF, while still leaving the owners of the PC version, without whom Healey would not be where he is today, out in the cold.

Wow. GTA4 game of the year? Gears of War 2 best shooter? Mediamolecule studio of the year? Metal Gear 4 best graphics? Please! How can they possibly justify any of that? I know it’s all based on the opinions, but really. I just can’t see how MGS4 beat Crysis for engine tech. As for Mediamolecule, it’s got 2 games under it’s belt, only one of which is a major release. And as fun as LittleBigPlanet is, I wouldn’t exactly call it outstanding. Besides, how does it makes sense that it wins the studio of the year award, but only manages to win a single award for it’s only game? I have to agree with cedge as well, Healey bugs me about as much as Cliffy B. With all he promised us for Ragdoll Kung Fu, he’s pulled quite a dick move when he decided to make RDKF for PS3 but that he’d never do anything for the PC version.
