Well, it’s the second Thursday of the month, so it must be that time of the month. The time where the NPD sales numbers for America hit, fanboys squeal and moan, and the hardware companies release their own PR spin. Of course, this time around, I’m not sure how Sony or Microsoft will be able to make their numbers look good. Yeah, Nintendo’s systems have been selling like hotcakes for awhile, but nothing like this. What’s the damage? Take a look.
Playstation 2 206k
Playstation 3 378k
PSP 421k
Xbox 360 836k
Wii 2.04M
DS 1.57MGEARS OF WAR 2* (360) 1.56 million
CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR* (360) 1.41 million
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE (WII) 796K
WII FIT (WII) 697K
MARIO KART (WII) 637K
CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR (PS3) 597K
GUITAR HERO WORLD TOUR* (WII) 475K
LEFT 4 DEAD (360) 410K
RESISTANCE 2* (PS3) 385K
WII MUSIC (WII) 297K
(* first month on chart)
Yes, that is over two million Wii systems sold. The DS is also doing pretty well for a system that everyone owns two of already. Microsoft can’t compete with the Wii, but they aren’t doing a shabby job against the “Playstation family.”
What about the software? As you’d expect, Gears of War and the new Call of Duty dominated the competition. What are these new Wii owners buying for their system? Well… It looks like they’re all grabbing Wii Play for that second controller. The Wii version of Guitar Hero 4 beat out all other versions to make it into the top ten.

waka waka waka.

In a recession, against about 15 AAA software title on the other system, NINTENDO still managed to beat the living shit out of the gaming fad with their errectially named, graphically underpowered Nintendo Wii. What does that say about just how WRONG people can be when they open their mouth?
It says, that Nintendo should be running our auto industry.

I think it just says people like to have fun when they’re depressed.

Why is Playstation in quotes? Just wondering…
I, too, think the picture is pretty awesome. You should link to the place where you can buy that.

It’s $200, though.

I’m really shocked that the Wii version is selling so well! I remember getting the Wii version of GHIII (mostly because I liked the idea of the guitar using the Wiimote for most of its functionality) and playing online with a friend once, but for the most part not many people I knew had a Wii version. Add to that it seemed like they sort of phoned it in because it was little more than a PS2 port (the 360 version is WAY more gorgeous and uses a different set of models), I eventually switched it up for Xbox. That also had the benefit of giving me a second guitar for the first Rock Band.
I wonder if World Tour is like GHIII in that they probably just ported the PS2 version. IS there even a PS2 World Tour…?

@ SIMON
I believe what Greg means by “Playstation” family is the fact that in their PR statements, Sony tends to combine the PS3, PS2 and PSP numbers into one large figure, to make the sales numbers appear bigger.
