Fallout 3 is my game of the year 2008, and it sounds like I’ll be playing it well into 2009 as well. We all knew that downloadable content was coming to Xbox 360 and PC, but a press release from Bethesda Softworks today gives us a taste of what to be looking forward to.
- Operation: Anchorage - Take part in a simulation of the liberation of Anchorage, AK from the Communist Chinese. January.
The Pitt - Venture to Pittsburg to take out some Raiders. February.
Broken Steel - Join up with the Brotherhood of Steel and kick some Enclave booty. Takes place after the main storyline. March.
A lot of people have been complaining that once you finish the game, that’s the end. Glad to see Bethesda is going to give us something more to do.
All three of these sound great, but the best part of all is coming to the PC next month: The Garden of Eden Creation Kit - content creator for Fallout 3. Create towns, buildings, characters, dialog, weapons, creatures…I have the game on 360, but for this, I may have to get myself a new PC. I can’t wait to see what the community at large will bring to the table.
Check after the break for the full press release, if you’re into that kind of thing. Meanwhile, I’ll just be sending Bethesda a blank check.

Bethesda Softworks Announces Creation Kit and First Downloadable Content for Fallout 3
Editor to be Available in December; Downloadable Content coming for January, February, and March
November 25th, 2008 (ROCKVILLE, MD)– Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, today announced plans to make both its editor and downloadable content available for its award-winning game, Fallout® 3 in the coming weeks. The official editor for Fallout 3 , called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free download in December and will allow Games for Windows® users to create and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage , will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows® in January, and more downloadable content coming in February and March.
“We’ve always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users,” said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3 .“It’s fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can’t wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K.”
The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3 , from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more.
Three downloadable content packs will be coming to Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live starting in January that will add new quests, items, and content to Fallout 3 .
• Operation: Anchorage . Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe– the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
• The Pitt. Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
• Broken Steel . Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.
Released on October 28 in North America and in Europe October 30, Fallout 3 has been hailed as one of the most anticipated games of 2008, and received a 10 out of 10 review score from Official Xbox Magazine, a result then repeated around the world with perfect scores by some of the industry’s most influential and respected critics including: Gamespy, GamePro, UGO, the Associated Press, MSN, The Washington Post, Guardian, FHM, G4-TV, The Toronto Star, and Eurogamer. MSNBC’s review offered the observation that it viewed“Fallout as a no-brainer for game of the year.” The Daily Star in the UK echoed that conclusion, saying“You can hold all bets on game of the year– I think we have a winner.”
Fallout 3 features one of the most realized game worlds ever created. Set more than 200 years following a nuclear war, you can create any kind of character you want and explore the open wastes of Washington, D.C. however you choose. Every minute is a fight for survival as you encounter Super Mutants, Ghouls, Raiders, and other dangers of the Wasteland.

Freaking win. I might have time to finish Fallout 3 by then.

I’d love to see the first Fallout storyline re-created in Fallout 3 G.E.C.K.

… and I may have time to finish Fallout 2 by then!
But this is seriously awesome! I will have to buy Fallout 3 as soon as I am done with #2.

I’m kind of hoping they’ll do some Chicago area… It’d be nice to see the city in more than a handful of games.

id like to see something more like shivering isles. this sounds more of like, idk, a mini game? Like hey, lets go to Alaska, kill some people, come back to Washington dc and have nothing else change.

The biggest problem with the Oblivion kit was people used it to create stuff like new characters, different weapons, etc — but nobody (well, relatively speaking) went the Neverwinter Nights route and used it to make GOOD new quests, new lands of interest, etc. Probably due to the lack of prefabs, etc… but I rarely care much for new weapons if it’s just the same world I get to do them in. Some of the NWN mods were literally better than the OC.

Can anyone recommend the perfect christmas gift for a pro when it comes to video games? Thanks in advance.

Hopefully the fact that it’s fallout means people will actually make some really good levels with the creator. I don’t think much amazing stuff ever came out of the Morrowind or Oblivion ones, but I could easily see it being different when the setting is Fallout.

I wish I could have gotten into Fallout 3. I tried, and then I tried again, just wasn’t feeling it.
Just out of curiosity- did anyone else JUST play the Thieves’ Guild and Assassin’s Guild quests in Oblivion and still have a BLAST?
Templedog - 11.27.08 11:47 pm
the game freezez when you talk to a person while trading for 2 long, some times it will freeze at an action scene like the v.a.t.s
i have heard the same complaint of other owners of the game on PS3
its nothing like Oblivion, not even close, but the weapons and splattering people with missle launchers is just amazing, also if you choose the explorer perk then the game starts getting better if you havent liked it then, but has lots of bugs that truly effect the game play, the XP points froze after level 20
i would definatly wait till they do the same thing they did with oblivion and that is sell the game with all the expansion packs and when they fix the bugs, but still its a great game just dont finish the main story and go explore because then you will be disapointed how short it is, and different endings is also cool, depending what you choose
rawaf - 12.02.08 2:13 pm
the levels froze after 20!?!? your a fucking retard RAWAF, now im gonna have to rape your mother and beat your father to death..you are so fucking stupid you piece of shit i hate you, and i hope you die, there is a level cap you stupid fuck, the game has bugs but it is very much playable your just a stupid piece of shit, and i hope your ps3 or whatever blows up on your mothers cunt…while your faggot father fucks you in the ass!!, buwhahahahahahaha im cumming im cumming im cumming im cumming!
wtf - 12.04.08 12:15 pm
LOL wow what an idiot. Gets your facts straight before u talk. Ya there are a little bugs, but i totally agree with WTF, it is VERY playable still. There is so much shit u can do its not even funny, its like the game never ends. And with these expansion packs, itll be even longer! I would buy this game twice
LOLatRAWAF - 12.08.08 9:11 pm
