October was a pretty huge month for the gaming world, and we’ve got some pretty huge entries this time around to show for it. Read on to hear what we played during the month that was, and let us know what’s been getting your love, too.

Jody:

First of all, the amazing Mother 3. I still haven’t finished it, as I’ve been slowly making my way through it, savoring it. It is phenomenal. I never beat Earthbound, but after Mother 3 I’m going to have to go back to it. Bonus points for Mother 3 since the patch came out on my 25th birthday. What better way to celebrate being a quarter century old than with a video game?

Second, LittleBigPlanet, which is fantastic. Probably one of my favorite platformers ever. Sackboys are just so damn adorable. MediaMolecule needs to create plushies. No doubt they would sell like hotcakes.

Last, but certainly not least, Fallout 3. I am saying it right now, this is my game of the year. Fantastic. Superb. Fantastically superb. I love this game, and I offically love Bethesda. The Rock-It Launcher is the single greatest weapon to ever be seen in a video game. Nothing beats taking off a Super Mutant’s head with a teddy bear. Nothing.

Edgar:

Like most of the staff I’ve been playing Mother 3, through my Wii on 46″ of love. My Wii got some loving this month for the first time in a long while. World of Goo and Tetris Party have been keeping me busy. That was until Fallout 3 came out… it’s consuming all my console game time, such an awesome game. I’ve been flagged KOS in Megaton for punching a woman in the face, hahah, how awesome is that?

The DS has been getting a lot of play during my bus ride to work. Played Transformers Animated (expect a review soon) and Madagascar 2: Escape from Africa.

And like every month, I’ve been playing Lord of the Rings Online on the PC. Level 50 Minstrel on Vilya.

We started doing the end game instances, which are amazingly fun :)

Evan:

Well, Mother 3 was finally “released” in English, so I sat there and played through all 20+ hours of that in a week. I had been waiting for this game for more than 10 years, so homework, studying, and hygiene were all forgotten about. It ended up being very different from Earthbound, but phenomenal in its own way.

I also randomly picked up Dead Space. I haven’t played much of it, but it’s totally awesome so far. It’s dark, scary, atmospheric, and the graphics may be the best REALISTIC graphics that I have seen on a console (Gears of War gives it a run for its money, though). The game plays like Doom 3, System Shock 2, and Resident Evil 4, which is a fantastic combo in my opinion.

I also picked up Castlevania: OoE, and despite being worried about the linear levels, it has become one of my favorite (if not my favorite) games in the series since the flawless Symphony of the Night. The combat is faster, the linear levels work really well, there are more secrets than in DoS and probably as many as PoR, the music is some of the best I’ve heard in years, and the new graphics (especially the sprites for enemies like the Great Knight) are some of the best I’ve ever seen. I beat it a few days ago, but I am still working on the special areas, and then I plan on playing through it on hard.

LittleBigPlanet!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything I wanted this game to be, it is. I was originally excited about the concept of the level creator and 4-player 2-Dish platforming, but the pre-created levels are good enough to be their own game. And, of course, the level creator is absolutely phenomenal. Easily the most powerful creation tool, while still being insanely simple, that I’ve ever used. And since it’s all physics based, you can almost make anything you ever want.

And it’s definitely my GoTY, which makes me feel bad for Mother 3, Dead Space, Brawl, and Castlevania…

Michael Tucker:

I can’t believe I actually got to sit down and play some games this month.

First off, I finally had a go at Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. I thought the game was kinda cool, just not very good. It was a fine time-killer though.

Secondly, and more importantly, I played through Dead Space. Let me start off by saying this: I don’t like scary games. I am a wuss, but even more than that, I just don’t think most scary games are very fun. For the longest time I thought Dead Space looked like a generic sci-fi game set in a spaceship with lame zombie-like aliens. Then, for some reason, around a week or so before the game’s launch I decided that I was interested in it. I don’t know why. That’s a totally counterintuitive move for me, but it was a good one nonetheless. The game is entirely atmospheric, a la the first Metroid Prime, just presented differently. And the necromorphs are actually interesting enemies. And, hell, the game is really freakin’ scary, but it’s also really freakin’ fun. I was scared every time the game wanted me to be, but it never quite pushed me to the point of freaking out. I just pulled out a bigger gun and proceeded with caution. After all, in Dead Space ‘freaking out’ usually means wasted ammo and that would mean some seriously sweaty palms later on. This is the best horror game since RE4, and in many ways it even tops it.

Shaun:

I feel that October has been my busiest gaming month of the year. I’ve been playing PURE, which to me is very reminiscent of playing Excite Truck. On top of that, I’ve begun playing Fable 2, Far Cry 2,and Fallout 3 (what’s with all the F-titles?) for the Xbox 360. On the Nintendo front, Orbient and Strong Bad’s Cool Game For Attractive People Episode 1 are keeping me busy, along with Wario Land: Shake It!

My top game this month, however, has been Mega Man 9. I cannot seem to get enough of it, no matter how much I play and no matter how much I need to play through a few other games to write reviews for them.

During the daily commute, I’ve been playing through TMNT on the Game Boy Micro. It’s a title that brings back memories of my father driving me to Chuck E Cheese’s just so I could play the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game for hours, and this can only be a good thing.

Rumas:

For me, this month was all about one game and one game only: Mother 3. I just can’t get enough of it, and the good news is that I’ve officially succeeded in taking it slow. I’m about halfway through at the moment. Still can’t do combos very well, but that’s okay — I just spend my time leveling up instead.

Oh, and I also played a bit of Ninja Five-0 on my GB Micro. Wicked game, and I can’t wait to play more.
