It’s out. Yep. It’s out. If you’re on the Internet, you’ve probably already heard. It’s ridiculous how quickly the news spread like radiation through ground zero – a true testament to the hidden, latent nature of the Earthbound fandom. In almost every OS, there’s an available patch for you, and an emulator to boot. Not only can you finally play the sequel 13 years in the making in English, but thanks to advances in homebrew and emulation, you can play it wherever you want on whatever you want.
Awesome.
Completely… Badical.

So, before the majority of you descend into the World of Mother 3 (or th :|, for those who are inaugurated), I think a couple of words are in order. When 4cr started covering the Mother 3 Fan Translation, things were incredibly optimistic. The team had been announced as a veritable dream team of ROM hacking experts, and in addition to this, the team was going to detail everything going on in a blog. Crazy, we thought. Awesome, we went on record to say. However, as we all know, life has a funny way of intervening in these things. As the hack progressed, the team eventually boiled down to just Tomato and Jeffman, with surprise guests popping in every now and then with a care package.
But what was most amazing near the end is that, despite life intervening, things managed to stay relatively on the sunny side. So many other translation projects fizzle out at the slightest dissent. Heck, even the original Mother 3 translation project quite literally imploded from the first sign of drama.
So, all in all, you’re not just playing a ROM hack: you’re playing the tireless, fanatical devotion that Mother fans are known for and proud of. The work of 2 years of sleep deprivation, of too many cups of coffee, and of a strong dream: do-it-yourself devotion.
As you load up Mother 3 in the coming days and weeks, remember that Tomato was perhaps the most qualified person on the Internet to bring us Mother 3 as true to Itoi’s vision and voice as possible. What you’re playing, while a translation, is probably about as close to the original as it could get. I’ve known the guy for neigh-on 7 years now, and despite co-authoring the Earthbound fandom, he’s been following the work of Itoi since 1999. This guy knows Itoi better than I know how many knives are in my kitchen drawer. And I think it’s about 6. But it could be 10. I forget.
Well, whatever. Anyway, my point is, Mother 3 rocks. It’s out in English now, and that rocks even more. When it launched, we all witnessed video game history, to boot. Mother 3’s fan translation is, perhaps, among the most ambitious and well-done patches ever created. If you hold your ears and forget thirteen years of bitter neglect, it feels just like Reggie kicked down our doors and screamed “HERE’S YOUR PRECIOUS MOTHER 3, NOW GO TO HELL” and collapsed our chimneys on the way out. The fact that the game works as flawlessly as it does is an amazing example of just how much hard work got poured into it, and a wonderful example of just how dedicated and awesome fans can be.
I watched the translation grow and prosper - and I even participated by drawing pictures for (almost) every update - and now seeing it out makes me just smile. Knowing that the Earthbound love is still alive and strong makes this old man’s heart beam with joy (and what appears to be a black, gooey liquid).
So, as the blog ends and our love for the game begins to flower, I ask that you take the game up and give it an open-minded, open-palmed playthrough. You may find the game, like our reporting, strange, funny and ultimately heartrending.

Do you need to play Mother 1 and 2 to understand this game, or it’s more of a Final Fantasy kind of game where it’s a new story and characters each time sharing a similar world?

neigh on, mitch. neigh on.

@Dago:
There are some things in Mother 3 that would be further appreciated by playing Mother 2 (Earthbound) at the very least.
But for the most part, it stands on it’s own like a crazy diamond.
@Post:
Well, there are no words. We are playing Mother 3 after all. Cheers, Mitch, for covering our beloved game for all this time.
And cheers, of course of course, to everyone who made this possible, Mato at the head of that line. This one’s for you.

Wow, for some reason it never occurred to me that it was THIS Mitch that drew those.
Anywyay, been loving the game so far. It was very worth the wait.

It hurts me that these guys have gotten completely done with this project without any word from Nintendo…and the petition years ago, and all of our calls and letters and everything.
That being said, I have an endless amount of respect for all the people that picked up the slack where Nintendo failed, and made something that I and countless other fans truly appreciate.

does anyone here know how i could get M3 to play on my 3.03-oe-c psp?
chris - 10.18.08 11:57 am
Really nice.
What brush are you using? I don’t draw to much in Photoshop, but I never seem to be able to find one that results in nice strokes like that.

@Amauriel:
I think ignoring the project was the best thing Nintendo could have done (aside from releasing it themselves, of course). I mean, how often do these things get shut down by cease and desist letters and the like? I’m just glad they let them finish.

@Chris: http://dl.qj.net/Unofficial-gpSP-Kai-v3.2-Test-8.7-PSP-Emula tors/pg/12/fid/15439/catid/122 is your best bet to run on a CFW’d PSP. I’m using PSP firmware 4.01 M33-2 currently and it works perfectly on that emulator (except sleep mode in Mother 3. But why would you want that?) . I think GpSP will run on that old of a custom firmware, but you may have to upgrade.
Also, in order to run that emulator you need a dump of the GBA bios. Just google search the file name in the readme and you’ll find it.

I’m amazed at the amount of quality and, dare I say it, PK Love put into this project.

I played the japanese version up to chapter 2 when it first came out, but decided to hold on until the translation was released. Boy was it worth the wait… I nearly cried at the end of the Prologue, and the first chapter. It’s amazing how the game transmits emotions in such a profound way - using only sprites and text. For those who haven’t played Earthbound before, go ahead and play it! If you want to skip it, and play Mother 3 right away, there’s no problem since you don’t need the previous game background to understand the story. Only up until the end there is a link to the previous game.

I waited forever for them to say “okay, also here’s Earthbound 2!” and it never happened. I am so happy this project eventually found its groove and stayed on track. I never thought I’d get to play (and enjoy) this game. Thinking back, Earthbound changed the way I looked at video games.

How would one go about playing this on a DS? Would an R4 work? I’d sure as hell buy one just to play this.
Joe - 10.20.08 7:55 am
Hey Joe,
Short story–you can’t play it directly with an R4. I recommend an EZ-Flash IV GBA cart, or EZ-Flash 3-in-1.
