One of the things that angers me most in the world is when someone or something gets, in my opinion, undeserved praise. This extends to games as well. So, in our staff emails, when someone mentions a game or movie that I feel is overrated, I tend to voice my opinions very loudly. I may be a little harsh in my assessments at times, but I always try my best to give good reasons why I feel the way I do.
It’s actually become such a frequent event, that the other writers have suggested that I have a weekly “Evan Hates _” column. So I bring you “EVAN HATES YOUR FACE” (thank Shatton for the fantastic name). It’s not going to be weekly, and I am not going to force it. I think it would be better if I just posted what I wrote in the staff email, expanding to it and fixing up some grammar, but leaving it basically the same.
So without further ado, my thoughts on No More Heroes!

NMH2 got announced, so I’m just going to throw out what I said about it in the forums. This is very legitimate hate:
I’ve already said my piece about this game, multiple times. It’s a decent game at best. The gameplay is dull and bland, the graphics, which get more praise (what the hell?) than negativity, really are terrible except for the character design, and the whole structure is nonsense.
I understand that the overworld isn’t supposed to be an open world. It’s just supposed to be a level hub. What I don’t understand is why all the minigames suck. Instead of just being good ideas that were poorly executed, they were AWFUL ideas just for the sake of being awful. And Suda 51 somehow manages to get praise for that. He wanted to create a “contrast between the dull jobs and the exciting missions” or some nonsense like that. Apparently, as long as you claim your minigames are awful for a reason, it’ll warrant you good scores.
The rest of the game isn’t that great either. The interesting characters and dialogue made it possible for me to finish it, and I actually had much more fun watching the interactions between the characters than playing the game. The gameplay seemed alright at the start since it’s your basic 3D brawler fare, but it quickly dissolved into repetitive button-masher, whose only saving grace was the tasteful use of motion controls. I’ll admit that swinging the Wiimote for finishing moves, rather than everything, was a very good idea.
But one good idea and interesting characters don’t excuse the rest of the game from being (at best) a decent game that looked like a first generation PS2 title. But I think that the thing that upset me the most is how people went on that we were supposed to buy this game if we wanted hardcore games on the Wii. The thing is, I’d gladly take the likes of Dewy’s Adventure, Endless Ocean, and Wii Sports over No More Heroes anyday. So no, I don’t want more games like No More Heroes.
If you want a game that’s similar in ridiculousness and hilarity, but that’s actually fun, pick up Godhand. The controls take some time getting used to, but once you master them, it’s absolutely fantastic, and infinitely deeper than No More Heroes.
So, am I opposed to a sequel? Not necessarily, but it had better be a hell of a lot better than the first.

Evan hates my face, too.

TRAVIS TOUCHDOWN!
itslupintic - 10.09.08 1:59 pm
No More Heroes overrated??? I thought the game didn’t sell to well, and got mostly average reviews.
Anyways some people like suda’s style over game play, at lest the game play in NMH was a big step up from Killer 7
It looks that they have much more time to work on NMH2:DS seeing how its not coming out till 2010. So hopefully they fix all the problems the first game had.
Chad - 10.09.08 2:03 pm
Now, should we write a column about how much we hate you now? That could be fun…
narF - 10.09.08 2:08 pm
The game has style like few games have. That’s what attracted me the most to it. I wanted to keep going to see what what fucked up characters we’d run into next. Without that no one would like this game. It’s not amazing, but it’s worth a rental.
robotplague - 10.09.08 2:18 pm
I was quite frankly expecting more hate.
Fajerkaos - 10.09.08 2:30 pm
I was also expecting more hate. Perhaps time has helped heal the would Travis Touchdown inflicted upon Evan.
Also LOL @Narf’s idea.
Shaun - 10.09.08 2:35 pm
Valid complaints, but I still loved the game. I do echo your sentiments on God Hand though. That game was bloody awesome.
Miffy495 - 10.09.08 2:52 pm
Thank you Evan. I’m glad SOMEONE finally said it.
Isn’t it odd though? If you hated No More Heroes you felt it got too much praise…if you loved it you felt it did poorly. Strange indeed…
Anyway, I didn’t hate the game per sey, but I was generally unimpressed. Grant you, I only got two levels in, and friends have told me it gets better as you go…but I somehow am reluctant to agree. Aside from some quirkiness and nerd referneces there isn’t anything to ME that sets No More Heroes apart from the dozens of other mindless beat-em’-ups on the market. And truth be told No More Heroes had so much sh** going on half the time I was confused what I was doing.
“OH! HERE! HAVE SLOT MACHINE! YOU MEAN KILLA NOW! BLOOD AND COINS EVERYWHERE LOL!”
…I will give the game another chance, and rent it…eventually. But in the mean time if I’m going to go with a mindlessly bloody beat-em’-up, I’m going to go with MadWorld, thanks.
OoF! - 10.09.08 2:57 pm
i like how you didn’t even touch on the subtle and not so subtle style and otaku throbacks. THAT is what attracted most people, and that is why i am excited for the second. I don’t think you actually played the entire game, evan.
sam - 10.09.08 3:11 pm
They really should have given up on the “open world.” Let us just select “employment center” on the map instead of wasting 5 minutes driving there.
Carl - 10.09.08 3:35 pm
While the fighting and graphics complaints may be valid as opinions, the common minigame and world complaints aren’t. Didn’t you realize that the whole game was a satire of the gaming culture? The completely unenjoyable minigames and city were parodie: the former parodying completionist mentality that many gamers have, and the latter Grand Theft Auto’s open world. You weren’t supposed to try to beat the minigames or explore the city. They’re representations of us.
I realized this from “No More Heroes is not punk”. http://schlaghund.wordpress.com/2008/03/11/no-more-heroes-is -not-punk/
Jacob - 10.09.08 3:38 pm
You’re saying exactly what I’m saying about NMH including that it is no God Hand. I enjoyed Killer7 and was hyped about NMH but after a short period with the game I realized it wasn’t all that great. A shallow brawler, that all. I haven’t found a whole lot of people that agree with me though.
Aap - 10.09.08 3:38 pm
I like it, why should your opinion matter more then mine? You’re an ass, grow up and justify yourself better.
Kannon - 10.09.08 4:24 pm
I’ll not got back, and praise the game again. I think I’ve already done it in past posts enough.
But, I think that such diverse opinions between hate and praise shows this is a game like no other - it’s something special.
i_am_error - 10.09.08 4:33 pm
The reason people love the game is the wackiness, just like EarthBound: Lower quality in most respects, but since it’s so non-standard and wacky, it’s interesting.
I disagree completely about the grapics. Sure they’re technically unimpessive, but like any art, whether they’re enjoyable or not depends on the viewer. I like them because they’re different, and interesting, and at the same time, they look good (in my opinion).
Simon - 10.09.08 4:46 pm
Man, I love this new feature. We’ll finally prove that Evan is the only one that hates everything.
But really, I love it because it gets people talking.
keep up the good work Evan
Edgar - 10.09.08 5:01 pm
I agree. I do have a soft spot for parts of no more heroes, i know that its a game i would really love if it had i dunno..MORE. I hate the overworld bits with a passion, and the graphics in that section make my eyes bleed. The boss fights are good, but everything in between is just not all that enjoyable, i find it hard to want to go back to it even though there are parts i adore.
Incidentally, NMH was the one wii game i was looking forwards to back when i had almost lost hope for the wii, and since buying it my wii has been unplugged and has seen next to no action. Not living up to the hype was a heavy blow.

@Narf
Heh
@Fajerkaos and Shaun
Yeah, I’m no Angry Video Game Nerd, that’s for sure.
@Sam and Jacob
I did play the game, and I did notice the video game culture references and everything. But if I can’t have fun playing the game, then those things aren’t a big thing to me.
@Kannon
Nope, that’s why we have the comments section, so you can voice your opinion, whether you agree with me or not.
@Simon
Like I mentioned in the article, I found the character design interesting, but I thought the backgrounds were terribly bland and boring.
rbelmont - 10.09.08 6:26 pm
Well, I still love it. Best game I played last year. And when the sequel comes out I will buy 2 copies to make up for the one you are not buying. But Even, I can’t hate your face. It’s a nice face.
Vinnk - 10.09.08 6:46 pm
I love No More Heroes. Finished twice actually in normal and hard, respectively. My brother is currently at the half way point of it and is having a lot of fun.
The graphics were done in a great way in my opinion since they actually considered what system the game was on and delivered a charming representation that the hardware could handle.
It’s going to be a long 2009 waiting for this game…
P.S.: The game is currently $19.99 at most Costco and Sam’s Club stores. For that price those that haven’t played it owe it to themselves to try it out.
EdEN - 10.09.08 7:36 pm
True it wasn’t a great game, but it amused me and I had fun even if it was “mindless slashing”. In the end that is all that matters.
Kenofthedead - 10.09.08 9:06 pm
It’s hard to sum up why I love No More Heroes…
The initial thoughts I had was that it was like suda just forgot everything since the NES, went back to that mindset and wondered what they thought video games might end up like.
I basically like the game for how ambiguous it is.
It’s like the game was made to be debated, the game constantly makes fun of pretentious shit like games with convoluted story lines- yet it’s setting up a complicated discussion, be it intentional or not.
I do think some of the parts of the game were made to be ‘bad’ on purpose, it’s tough to draw the line where the purposeful decisions end and real shortcomings start, but wherever it is I think suda is laughing at every review that mentions them.
It has me going beyond the gameplay, etc, and really pondering the intentions
TakaM - 10.09.08 9:12 pm
This game made me smile more and more as I played it. It kept pushing me and trying its best to keep me challenged even with the constant failure I would receive in certain parts of the game. It was about simplicity and gaming at its core. It showed that the world around us is mindless zombies that don’t pay attention to anything we do and that no matter what we do in life, there will always be more and more to fight for.
Kannon - 10.09.08 9:38 pm
Boo! Shut up. No More Heroes was amazing.
BudDudandSlash - 10.09.08 10:01 pm
Awesome game, NMH was. Just finished it finally a couple days ago. I think it was the amazing feedback I got from delivering those final blows and sweet wrestling moves that kept me so happy and involved. Can’t wait for round 2 with more crazy characters, super style and over-the-top action. Bring it SUDA.
Mars - 10.09.08 10:42 pm
I am really fond of this game, but I do admit it isn’t perfect.
@Takam: I think you hit it on the head as to why I like the game. I really hope for the sequel though he improves on the faults of the game, satire or no.
9th Sage - 10.09.08 10:58 pm
I cannot even comprehend how anyone can dislike NMH. The graphics are pretty damn sexy, the storyline is amazing, the characters are never boring, and aside from the map (which really wasn’t that bad, considering how there were plenty of secret shirts and balls to find, which I think kept it interesting) it was an overall brilliant game.
I would honestly give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I’m pretty pumped for the sequel.

Obviously your taste in games is questionable just from the simple comment of saying Godhand was a good game. You should take it for what it was a fun and short slasher game that should be rented or bought used and can use some improvements, which may come in the sequal.

My sentiments exactly. NMH was awsome just like Contact. Go watch this : http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation /33-No-More-Heroes

Played a bit past the first boss and didn’t feel the urge to touch the game again. It’s the yawnies and all your criticism is so spot on, it’s scary!
siro - 10.10.08 3:21 pm
Wow… that sucks… I think NMH is Genius… ALMOST on par with GOD HAND as the greatest game EVAR! I was getting worried about your rant until the end… when you mentioned how totally RAD God Hand is… I thought you might be a HATER!
Cheers! It’s okay if you think NMH sucks… as long as you LOVE God Hand!
