So here is a question for all you rebels; are you looking forward to The Conduit?
We here at the 4cr Hall of Justice are mixed. Rumas was throwing out the hatorade:
I don’t understand The Conduit at all. It looks like an amazing game wasted on a dull game, if that makes any sense. And I think its gonna sell really bad. Then High Voltage is going to complain about how hardcore games don’t sell on Wii, while the real issue will be that if it was not only a good game, but a captivating one with a solid identity of its own, it would have sold fine.
While Hokku was a bit more optimistic:
I think the Conduit is gonna be awesome. Everything about it looks really… cheap. Like cheap, almost arcade-like. I mean, cheezy dull aliens, bright colors, all that jazz. But the guys making it, they’re committed. They’re in love with the Wii, they’re not just making a game like EA where it’s supposed to pull in the dough to further their business plan. These guys seem to passionately care about videogames and the Wii and, if they’re competent enough, I think The Conduit will become one of the most fun, unexpected games on the Wii.
That, or it’ll become Geist 2.
Edgar just said vulgar things that I can’t print. Vulgar in a good way. Like getting married to the game and doing the nasty.
Me, I’m still mixed. It looks great and the developer seems passionate. It sorta reminds me of Perfect Dark (the good one). But for me, this type of game is all about story. If the story is on the level of Half-Life I will die of happiness. I guess we will see. The 4cr crew is on the case and we will try to pump the developer, High Voltage Software, for more info very soon.

lulz, frist comment.
I see The Conduit as possible proof that A.) There are good third-party games on the Wii, B.) There are good third-party FPS’s on the Wii, and C.) EVERY FRIGGIN’ KINDA-LOOKS-GOOD GAME GETS OVERHYPED i mean FOR GAWD’S SAKE.

More insect-alien invasion shoot em up? Pass.

Nay.

Personally my thought is that if you’re hung up on graphics you shouldn’t have gotten a Wii to begin with… Beyond that, nothing about it strikes me as original or ridiculously interesting. It’ll be neat to see a solid FPS on the Wii, but I don’t foresee it being much more than that.
There’s been plenty of decent 3rd party games on the Wii and there will be plenty more.

I probably would have purchased this game day one, if it had had local multiplayer. I agree with Nick, that it reminds me of Perfect Dark, which is my favorite FPS ever.
I also will agree with people that it looks average. But, in my mind, FPSes are a shining example of games that work MUCH better on the Wii than other consoles. Hell, even though Red Steel was a complete mess, I played more of that game than the Halo series, Half Life 2, or various other “fan favorites”. I can only imagine how much I would enjoy a good, or even average, FPS with Wii controls. And better Wii controls than Red Steel.

I coulda swore the whole charm was how it paid homage to Goldeneye. If you consider that a rip off we`ll just have to disagree.

Yay!

Woah, Hokku is still alive?
Anyway, I pretty much agree 100 percent with Rumas except that I think I will enjoy it a lot. If that makes any sense.

I’m not sold. It takes a lot to get me to turn on my wii, and unless the game is something unique im not really sold on ‘ X with waggle’. I dont really see whats so special about this game other than its on the wii, but ill be honest and say i’ve not really gone deep into finding out about its gameplay. I can see why people would be interested in it, but its not really doing much to grab me atm.
ALH - 10.04.08 5:48 am
Yeah I’m getting it, not uber psyched for it, but as psyched as I can be for an FPS
TakaM - 10.04.08 8:08 am
Nay.
Cheap video games - 10.04.08 8:51 am
Yay!
I find it funny how people clamoring for hardcore titles on an unabashedly-casual console are unwilling to give this game a chance. I believe Nintendo is going to publish the title, so that should give the game some extra marketing power.

FIRST-PERSON-SHOOTERS NEED TO DIE!!! THEY’RE ALL THE SAME!!! AND BORING!!! NEXT! AND DON’T GIVE ME THAT STORY BULLSHIT!
Lucy - 10.04.08 10:16 am
Yea.
I’m looking forward to it. The devs seem dedicated, and the fact that Nintendo picked it up might tell you something.

Most third parties don’t put much effort into their Wii games. High Voltage is really trying, are passionate and are putting tons of resources into the game. I don’t play many shooters, but I want to support them for that reason. I’m not expecting a mind blowing game, but a good looking, excellently controlled shooter would be cool.
Gausser - 10.04.08 11:39 am
First Person Shooters need to be cel-shaded.
Kannon - 10.04.08 12:34 pm
Not really interested… =/

To me the game is both and stab and jab at the FPS genre.
I really believe these guys know the game is for the most part kind of cheesy in the sense that they have created an FPS about aliens and government conspiracies and such. Which for the most part is probably 60% of the shooter genre… the other 30% are reserved for the war games… and the final 10% I’ll reserve for FPS titles that aren’t hardcore on the shooter element, such as the Metroid Prime series, Bioshock, Giest, and light gun styled romps, basically other games based in the first person that involve shooting, but introduce other elements or simply don’t follow in the sci-fi/war blast them all pace FPS.
The game does have the ASE aspect, which will be interesting to see more of in general cause to me they are striving to put a little more depth to the action. They want you to feel like a spy and figuring out the conspiracy. Not simply shoot and survive.
The graphics are by far the best out of the higher end quality Wii games (so good in fact that they’ve mentioned that other companies have already come to them to source out their graphics engine), but the character models and environments are a tad generic to the whole sci-fi FPS style. Mind you, they haven’t shown a whole lot in terms of the levels… so far all we’ve seen is shots where you are either in the half destroyed city, military bunker place and what looks like a government embassy. I’d like to think that they will have a lot more variety of locations in the final product.
The strongest point in my mind about the game is that they are in fact the little developer that could. They are essentially showing up every big game developer who doesn’t think the Wii can produce pretty graphic effects, or isn’t a good system for FPS games. If this game is successful it will make companies like Ubi-Soft who reserve the Wii as their party game dump off place (Come on they are releasing games like The Price is Right, Shuan White Snowboarding, , coming out for the Wii) look shameful.
For the most part if the game is fun I’m gonna buy it, even if the story is a little stereotyped, as long as I can have a few buddies over, have a few drinks and enjoy shooting each other then I think the game will be worth buying. Sometimes us as gamers can be way to critical and stingy about games, especially before they’ve ever been released… it’s never bad to keep the old motto “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, and play the game before knocking it.

I think the Conduit is going to be as good a game as any of the top shooter - it’ll be just as enjoyable as the likes of Halo.
However, it’ll never be acclaimed as such, which is not only a shame for High Voltage, but a perfect example of the blatant hypocrasy of a gaming media that should not be trusted under any circumstances.
