Whether you expected disappointment or not from Nintendo’s latest conference, I think it’s safe to say that they have officially made up for E3. The DSi is the latest revision of DS and, while not a fully-fledged new portable system, it’s at the very least halfway there. Here’s what we know so far:
- 3.25 inch LCD screen (versus the DS Lite’s 3 inch screen)
- Two .3-megapixel cameras equal to a maximum resolution of 640×480
- Will be able to sync with the Wii Photo Channel and edit photos
- SD slot on right-hand side.
- On-board memory
- Comes with web browser (presumably Opera-based) and will support music playback with adjustable pitch and playback rate.
- Will launch with the DS equivalent of WiiWare in which you can download new titles for the DS (Wii Points now officially called Nintendo Points)
- DS Ware titles range from free/300/500/800
- No GBA slot
- 18900 yen ($180 US)
- The DSi will be released in white and matte black on November 1st in Japan, 2009 elsewhere.
Here’s the official DSi information page at Nintendo (Though, it’s in Japanase) and here’s a possible spec comparison (via GoNintendo)
So there you have it. I suppose it was time to let go of the GBA slot and Nintendo has finally, finally, gotten the memo about internal storage. Plus, DSWare? Hell yeah! What do you guys think of Nintendo’s newest enemy of the wallet?

SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE CHIP!

Now that I’ve settled down from all the excitement, I can’t help but be cautious about buying one of these. The new features are super awesome and all, but is an official DS 2 on the horizon for next year? One with better graphics, motion control, better camera, more storage and RAM?
I already have a DS lite, is this really THAT worth it?
Ah hell, I know when I see it in a store I’m just gonna snap one up. Who am I kidding?
Keeko_ca - 10.02.08 2:53 am
It looks so awesome…
So… awesome…

A CAMERA
Maré - 10.02.08 3:12 am
I like the look of the DS channels interface. Hopefully that can be upgraded on existing hardware somehow - maybe over the air via the Wii? As for the DSi itself, I’m not sold on it and I don’t think I will be. If I didn’t already have a DS Fat and two DS Lites then maybe, but I’d need to see what good the cameras are gonna do me before spending $180. I have an iPhone for music and web browsing (and pictures, and phone calls…) so the DSi isn’t compelling for me personally, though I could see kids without cell phones using the extra functionality. A 0.3MP camera is pretty pathetic, though. (Or is that two 0.3MP cameras? Maybe one of them is actually decent - 2-3MP would be nice for the outer camera.)
Dean - 10.02.08 3:25 am
Oh good, a more expensive DS with no GBA slot and a camera that will ruin even more games than the mic already has.
Duds - 10.02.08 4:37 am
@Duds:
Why would people use the camera in their games? I guess I would be cautious as a game developer to use something that only a small percentage of the population has rather than the entire DS fanbase. I think we have a while before the camera starts ruining games.
Amauriel - 10.02.08 6:29 am
I’ll be buying, everything sounds good.
I just hope the DSi’s on-board memory isn’t Nintendo’s solution to the Wii’s storage problems.
TakaM - 10.02.08 7:10 am
I want to buy one of these at launch, but I don’t know if my Japanese DSi will be able to download and play DS Ware titles from my wifi connection here in the UK, and if english-language downloads will be available. Worry, worry..
mikeUK - 10.02.08 7:39 am
Hm, I wonder if I shall be able to use homebrew on it? Anyway, have to save up for this I guess. I wish they’d have announced this before I broke my previous DS LIte and bought a new one.
9th Sage - 10.02.08 9:33 am
Seem interesting but am weary since it is not the DS2 (2010?) and just another iteration. Still very exciting. The lost of the GBA circuitry and slot-2 is a minus however if they have WPA wifi a definite plus and a more robust network (hopefully no more freaky long friend codes).
I am happy with my DS lite and will not buy the DSi…maybe not…if its on sale…if it’s cute…who am I kidding…
Red Troll - 10.02.08 9:36 am
What about transfering Pokemon from GBA?!
Cheap video games - 10.02.08 10:27 am
The price point is what confuses me. I would imagine that it should be $129 like the DSLite it is supposedly replacing.
I won’t be buying one.
Kyle - 10.02.08 10:29 am
This is cool and all, but I’m starting to be a little turned off by the idea of 3 significant revisions of a single system in such a short time span. They’ve practically passed Apple in this territory now.
Tony - 10.02.08 10:46 am
The Wii storage issue has been addressed. They are going to let you use the SD slot as you see fit. A software update is coming.
I will wait awhile for this DSi. Good luck keeping that camera lens clean and unscratched. Hopefully there won’t be anymore broken hinges either.
synaptic flow - 10.02.08 11:00 am
I would also hope they would build in support for WPA wireless. Having only be able to access WEP networks on the current DS lite (and phat) is pretty limiting, esp. when I prefer to use WPA at home.
Stevan - 10.02.08 11:07 am
i have my Phat that i got on launch day and always kinda wanted to get a Lite. screw the Lite im getting a DSi
kojo87 - 10.02.08 11:10 am
Hm, so are those games they mentioned DSi only, or do they work on the DS? If I have to buy what is essentially another DS to play Mario & Luigi 3, I’m not going to be happy.
9th Sage - 10.02.08 11:20 am
Meh. I have a fat DS. I’ll wait to upgrade until the DS2.
Shadic - 10.02.08 12:00 pm
Magic Box is reporting that the external camera is 3 megapixels. I can’t find the info on the site either, but take the 640×480 statistic with a grain of salt.

George - 10.02.08 12:44 pm
Disappointing.
Higher price, no GBA slot, ugly.
I’m happy with my Lite.
4ndii - 10.02.08 12:46 pm
Basically E3 sucks, they (who ever does E3, the IDSA?) have systematically destroyed its importance… Nintendo probably decided its better not to rush development to show at a venue that really doesn’t matter. E3 has been dead - and it was death by suicide, now they know the err’s of their ways and want to bring it back - but momentum has already been lost. Such a dumb move to shut it down in the 1st place… why? because it was too crowded!? They obviously haven’t been to TGS! E3 is Dead, Long Live TGS! And yeah i know the ninny doesn’t show at TGS but this timing is right for TGS, coincidence???
Anyway, the DSi is interesting, too bad at the loss of the gba slot… curious to see how this plays out….

A CAMERA
befto - 10.02.08 1:49 pm
Really? Perhaps overtime, as more news is released, this will seem better.
Savage - 10.02.08 2:12 pm
It sucks balls, i like pokemon games and this wont be able to transfer pokemon from GBA, it will be good for things like spore, creating body parts out of pictures, but the camera is probs gonna be like 0.2 megapixel and the MP3 wont work with i tunes songs so thats gonna be crud and also, its just been rushed and probs wont be good
Werecow - 10.02.08 2:44 pm
I give it a big meh.
I like the onboard memory and the ability to download games that last longer than one power down…but the camera and slightly wider screens, whatever.
Peter - 10.02.08 2:58 pm
@WERECOW - Most likley, since Pokemon Platinum isn’t in the USA yet, Gamefreak/Nintendo still has time to make an adapter.
And I think I might import this.
Blood_Falcon - 10.02.08 3:23 pm
Wonder what is going to be done with all the GBA slot peripherals like Guitar Hero?
MAL - 10.02.08 3:44 pm
TWO CAMERAS!?
Mike - 10.02.08 4:01 pm
Why on earth would the mp3 player work with I tunes? Come on now!
synaptic flow - 10.02.08 5:30 pm
Maybe if it wasn’t a DS 1.5, I’d be more excited. Let’s hope that Nintendo releases a stripped down “i” model.
Yaanu - 10.02.08 7:02 pm
What about all the peripherals such as the rumble pack, the guitar grip, pokemon, having kirby in the gba slot to unlock another character? Although that’s an old game, Guitar Hero On Tour isn’t yet.
Eric - 10.02.08 7:02 pm
Yeah, I’m starting to think Nintendo isn’t going to sell the DSi well. Like I said, the iTendo (or whatever) would probably sell better than a replacement.
So what would the DSi be? That jerk who strolls into town and steals your brother’s girlfriend?
Yaanu - 10.02.08 7:12 pm
make a new version, why don’t you…wow. think of all the upgrades the ds has had. yeah,3, but c’mon…this is bullshit. this is mass production. they want your money, of course they do. they always have. but this is becoming ridiculous!!why so many teeny upgrades, nintendo? can’t you just make an entirely new product??
sack of joe - 10.02.08 8:21 pm
A stripped down “i” model would be the current DS Lite. This could hardly be called an upgrade, even with the new firmware, brower, download store, etc.
Honestly the only thing that would get me excited about this thing would be if someone figures out a way to hack the firmware via SD card a la the PSP. I could see a lot of potential for built-in homebrew. Everything else is pretty much meh… and nothing a basic cell phone couldn’t do these days.
Jake - 10.02.08 8:57 pm
Hurm. I basically got the same reply over at DS Fanboy.
It’s not that I don’t want the DSi, I want the DSi, but without the DS, you know? How else am I gonna have fun scrounging up money to buy a copy of Pokemon FireRed so I can get those last few Pokemon in Pearl? It won’t fit in the SD slot, I’m pretty sure.
Unless they come up with a GBA to SD dongle. That would be fine, I suppose. It’d feel awkward for Guitar Hero, though.
Also, aren’t Friend Codes generated from the game, plus your DS model? Does this mean we’d have to change them all?
Yaanu - 10.03.08 4:12 pm
you get more for the money if you buy a normal ds, there are just some classics that you cant get rid of that are on gba, i still have the sp just to play some gb games like old school mario, it just seems wiser to have more platform capability, whats the point of having internet on the ds when majority of the time your online is at home, the point of a gaming system is to well play games not to check myspace blah blah, this generation is getting more stupid by the day i swear
Professional Thug - 10.04.08 3:37 pm
First game boy system since the GBC i will not be buying. Actually the only one i have never bought was the GBP. But this is a clear cash-in. I have a webcam and play music on my computer, i can even take photos of at least that resoluation, and play music on my crappy phone. GIVE ME A REAL NEW PORTABLE SYSTEM NINTENDO not a cash in.
