Hello Player 1

So I got a chance to meet the guys from Vicarious Visions and Neversoft last week and we chatted about their upcoming game, Guitar Hero World Tour.
First off, new to the series includes the drum and microphone. Having played Rock Band a few times, I can say I was really impressed with the quality of the drum in GHWT. It felt better, made less noise when you hit it and the sticks bounced back after a hit, like on real drums. The guitar is different also. No more clicking noise with every strum, there’s a touch sensitive neck slider and a dedicated Star Power button. I didn’t try the microphone, because I can’t sing, but it worked pretty well from what I could see (or, more precisely, hear) from the others singing in the room.

Everyone knows the Guitar Hero/Rock Band gameplay formula, so I’ll just explain what’s new. There are two new kinds of notes that I noticed in the game for the guitar player. One is just a horizontal line, which means you simply strum without pressing any buttons. The second ones are notes linked by purple lines, which mean you need to use the neck slider without strumming. Also new to World Tour are the Music Studio and GH MIX.

Music Studio is where you can get together with friends and just jam out. Play what you want by choosing one of five instruments: lead guitar, bass and drums, which are the three parts you can replay after. Then you have Keyboard and another guitar that you can add, too. While playing in the Music Studio, you can record yourself and export your parts in the GH MIX.

The GH MIX is where things really get interesting — you can copy/cut/paste part of your song, add effects and move notes around. Think of it as a professional music editor ported to a console. Anyone remotely interested in creating their own music will love these two modes, as they work together in helping you create the song you want. Guitar players are probably saying “Well there’s six chords on a Guitar and only five buttons on the GH guitar.” In the Music Studio, you can set which button, or combo of buttons, plays what note, so you can get your full scale by using button combos. This gives you the ability to play pretty much any song you want now. You can change the scale (Major, Minor, etc) you play on, and even the way your instrument sounds.

I received a couple questions from readers and friends about the game, and so I asked them to the devs while I was there. Here’s what they had to say -
Will we get some DLC in the first week of release?
Yes, and they’ll be released on a weekly basis.

Aren’t you afraid of alienating the millions of casual gamers who bought the other Guitar Hero games because it was simple and fun? But now you’ve added all sorts of extra features sure to scare some off.
This simplicity is still there, you can still play only the guitar if you want. We even added an easier difficulty, Beginner. For the Wii version, we’ve added the Mii Freestyle mode.

What kind of online modes can we expect?
Band vs Band (4vs4)
There’s also 1vs1, 2vs2, 3vs3.
You can also play four players on four different Wiis in band play.
How will we save our songs we downloaded?
You can either save it in the system’s memory or an SD card.
When you go in the Downloaded songs area, you’ll see both those from your internal memory and SD Card.

How many user-created songs will we be able to create and download?
You’ll be able to create and download over 50(for both) songs and save them locally. From the songs you’ve created, you’ll be able to upload five of them online at once.
Only 5?
You’ll be able to unlock up to 10 upload slots by participating in the community(rating songs, uploading songs, etc).
You can get up to 15 if your song is showcased (Highest Rating/votes).
How big can the user created songs be?
1200 notes per instruments and/or three minutes long
The level of customization in Guitar Hero World Tour is probably what surprised me the most, from the character customization to the different sounds you want your instruments to make in the Music Studio and GH Mix, there’s sure to be something to keep everyone hooked on the game for a long time. Be sure to keep an eye out for the game at the end of October.

That’s very, very disappointing. There go my hopes of playing any song I want in GH.
Edgar on September 16, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Yeah, better keep your songs short
Or save it in parts…..

But is it Fun?
Edgar on September 16, 2008 at 2:39 pm
It is!!
It’s great
If you like the other games GH and/or Rock Band you’ll love this one.
Mii freestyle is fun to full around in.

I don’t care much what the haters think, I am looking forward to it.
Matt on September 16, 2008 at 2:49 pm
sounds fun! I’m jealous you got to play it.

1200 notes and/or three minutes long? This game just dropped off my most wanted list. I was really hoping this would be a good outlet for indie bands to market their music… you know, free GH versions of their songs when they’ve got a new release coming out? But 1200 notes between four instruments, plus a mock melody track… that’s nothing. Very disappointing.
Edgar on September 16, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Wait wait!
It’s 1200 notes PER INSTRUMENTS
and 3 minutes FOR THE WHOLE SONG
Edgar on September 16, 2008 at 3:12 pm
I just fixed it in the article.
RogerOsk on September 16, 2008 at 5:05 pm
“and 3 minutes FOR THE WHOLE SONG”
How does that change anything…?
This isn’t the 60s, nobody makes 3 minute long songs anymore. Maybe 3 and a half, if they’re really tight. It’s just silly.
on365 on September 16, 2008 at 5:24 pm
It’s great!
thesimplicity on September 16, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Thanks for clearing that up. There’s a BIG difference between 1200 notes per instrument and 1200 per song.
The 3 minute limit is still pretty annoying, but maybe there’s a way to do something like write a song at in doubletime at 240BPM and then change it to 120BPM when you play it back?
Kyattsuai on September 16, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Were people seriously complaining about how challenging easy mode was to justify one BELOW it? When I started playing Guitar Hero, I had accidentally been playing it left-handed for a dozen songs on easy without a problem.
Simon on September 16, 2008 at 9:10 pm
People probably didn’t complain about how hard it was, but all the three-fingered grownups who you showed the game to might be less baffled by a super-easy mode.

Thanks for the enthusiastic response Edgar!
Anyone curious as to how long it’ll be before whatever protection they have on the downloadable songs get broken? The whole SD card and sharing the Music Studio songs just makes you wonder about the connectivity with computers/internet.
Has anyone heard of a hack for the currently available songs off the 360 or PS3 btw?

Great article! I still would like to know more about the new GH guitar, particularly about the touch sensitive neck slider. Also, do the new features on this guitar make the last guitars obsolete?
Chris on September 17, 2008 at 11:53 pm
@kyattsui: that’s because not everyone in the world is as awesome as you are, I guess!
Henry on September 18, 2008 at 9:32 am
que paso? what’s that? ACTUAL MUSIC? Oh man, I’m having so much fun with that music creator thing.
Edgar on September 20, 2008 at 10:16 am
@Mal- The neck slider is mostly for chained notes, Notes linked by a purple line. So no it doesn’t really make the other guitar obsolete, because you can still press the buttons instead of using the slider
Jak on September 21, 2008 at 1:57 am
The neck slider can also be tapped during the non-chained notes instead of strumming, and you can also slide your finger along it during sustained notes to change how it sounds.
Jman on September 22, 2008 at 6:03 pm
How much memory does 1 DLC song use on an SD card and how many Wii points are the songs gonna be?
prozamsta on October 5, 2008 at 7:18 pm
im left handed and i want to get this but im also left handed on the drums, on the guitar it was fine because you could just turn it upside job done, but if i played this the high hat would be orange green would be snare, blue middle tom, red floor tom and yellow the crash so is there a setting where you can change the drums around so a left handed player can do it because if not im not going to buy this as it would be a waste of money as i couldn’t play the drums properly and thats my instrument of choice :/
