I recently got a chance to chat with Eric Nofsinger from High Voltage Software about their upcoming Wii title, The Conduit.
The interview after the break.

Please tell us your name and your part on the team.
Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Officer.
What made you choose the Wii has your console of choice to develop your games?
We are big fans of the Nintendo Wii and gamers all around. While there are a lot of games for families and younger gamers, there didn’t seem to be much in the way of 3rd party games for us. And that just seemed wrong, because the system has so much potential. We are hoping to realize that potential.
What makes The Conduit different from other FPS games?
Our Wii specific control input mechanisms, our “all seeing eye” puzzles, and customizable control and heads up display.
Did other games influence some of the gameplay elements in The Conduit?
Certainly Halo and Golden Eye were big influences for their brilliant accessibility.
Tell us more about the game, what can we expect story wise?
The Conduit is an alien invasion action / thriller filled with conspiracies. On the highest level, the story is elegant and unobtrusive to gameplay, and for those that want to snoop around a bit, it is very deep and multi-layered.
What can we expect in terms of multiplayer? Offline multiplayer? Online or perhaps LAN(linked system)?
Our plan is to deliver a solid multiplayer experience both online and LAN.
How many players can we expect from online play?
We are targeting 16 players. But higher or lower, the important thing is that it is an incredible player experience throughout.
Any plans on including bots in multiplayer? Not many games supported bots this generation and they use to be a big thing.
Some of those details are still being worked out.
Can you explain the different modes of multiplayer we’ll be able to play?
The usual suspects: death match, capture the flag, etc. Although, our desire is to give each a Conduit specific twist.
How flexible is the Quantum 3 engine? Is it only good for the FPS genre?
Cirque Du Soleil acrobat flexible. Our engine was designed from the ground up to give us the ability to create many types of games.
Has any company contacted you to licence your Quantum 3 engine?
Many developers and publishers have contacted us. For now, we are focusing on making good games. We don’t really want to become a middleware provider. That doesn’t sound like nearly as much fun.
Will you be using the recently announced Wii Speak for online play?
We are actively pursuing Wii Speak.
Have you guys seen Johnny Lee’s concept with the head tracking device? Have you ever thought of using it in your game as an option?

Yep. That’s super cool. I don’t think it’s quite right for what we are doing. But it’s really neat for sure.
Thanks for answering all our questions

Nice interview. I really wish that they would have put in local multiplayer though, because that would have definitely made the game a must buy for me. Right now it’s just a maybe, because I know that I wouldn’t play online much at all.
The coolest thing I’ve seen in the game is the gun where you can control the bullets with the wiimote.

Quantum 3…. this is something that really puts High Voltage on the map. I’m not surprised they’ve been contacted by so many companies to make use of this engine.
Why? Simply because they’ve created a graphics engine designed for the Wii, which actually puts it on par with the graphics of the 360 at least. Other 3rd party developers really have been put to shame, especially other big name ones (Ubisoft I’m looking at you especially) who have basically made their Wii releases shameful in terms of graphics and potential.
Basically High Voltage has shown one thing, and that is that with a little know how and some hard work, the Wii really can do anything you want it to do. It makes other companies look really lazy I’m sorry.
Hight Voltage I have to say power to you for your work. You should license out the Quantam 3 engine eventually, but make sure to get more then your money’s woth for all your hard work that no other company was really willing to put in.

that’d be awsome if they made monster hunter 3 for wii using quantum 3 just think realistic water shiny metal etc…lol
SilverWeb - 08.17.08 9:30 am
great idea SIVLERWEB
BIGDICKDUDLEY - 08.17.08 11:19 am
:D but another thing im thinking about does Quantum 3 come with its own physics engine or do they use another one i mean if they use a different one couldnt they remake the Euphoria physics engine for wii just like they dide with thee call of duty 4 engine?
SilverWeb - 08.17.08 12:27 pm
monster hunter 3 will shit on any qauntum 3 game like high voltage will hit capcom levels of wii power pushinmg come on wake up
qauntum 3 engine
cod 4 engine
athina engine that new moutine climbing survival horror
existing engines like renderware all ps2 engines
res evil 4 engine
the liost goes on qauntum 3 is not the only high end engine on wii
people need to wake up 3rd partys do have access to great engines
wiiboy101 - 08.17.08 1:15 pm
Uhmm. Res Evil 4 isn’t high end. No PS2 engine is high end. COD4 engine doesn’t mean COD5 will be anywhere near as good as the COD4 engine was on 360, PC, PS3. It’ll be lowered a bunch for the Wii.
Roy - 08.17.08 2:16 pm
actually the COD4 engine wasn’t lowered all that much for the wii and because of that there is no split-screen co-op
SilverWeb - 08.17.08 3:43 pm
What game on the wii uses the COD4 engine?
Edgar - 08.17.08 5:02 pm
Uhmm so far as I know there arn’t any other game’s the COD4 engine at all, besides COD4 it self.
I was wondering what kind of engine is retro studios using for metroid prime corruption ?
ROYALECODE - 08.17.08 5:54 pm
@Edgar
COD5 will. Hopefully it’ll look comparable to COD4 on the other systems. I definitely don’t expect it to look the same though.
And yeah, people are going nuts about the graphics and stuff in this game, but it doesn’t look NEARLY as impressive as Metroid Prime Corruption in my opinion.
rbelmont - 08.18.08 12:45 am
@RBelmont well the reason why its more impressive for the Q3 engine to be doing this than say Metroid 3 is that Metroid is fairly in house. I mean, Its a Nintendo first party title. If they can’t tap into their system then ouch.
But whenever a third party taps into a system and brings something like this to the table it raises eyebrows because bigger studios haven’t done so already.
GeorgeR - 08.18.08 6:23 pm
Eh. Nothing new.
blackprince97 - 08.19.08 2:18 am
Very nice.
