Bionic Commando: Rearmed is a game that I’ve been looking forward to since I saw the first trailer. It actually made me less interested in the real Bionic Commando sequel, because this one just looked so much better. So after about half a year of waiting, and a couple months of delays, it was finally released yesterday on XBLA (today on PSN), and it was well worth the wait.

BC:R is a $10 remake of the original Bionic Commando that came out on the NES, but you really can’t tell, because the production values are so high in this remake. The graphics and music are amazing, the menus look nice, and everything is just one step above pretty much every other downloadable game out there. And thankfully, the gameplay is just as good as the presentation.
The controls are simple since you only have shoot, grenade, bionic arm, and switch weapons, but they manage to make the game pretty complex. Using the bionic arm is tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to do really cool maneuvers. Nothing is more satisfying than blocking a shot with your bionic arm, then swinging over to the enemy and taking him out.

And if a fantastic remake of a classic game wasn’t enough, Capcom added a co-op mode, a multiplayer mode, and a bunch of challenge rooms. The co-op is self-explanatory, but the multiplayer mode is a little more confusing. It feels similar to Smash Brothers because it’s played on a smallish level with lots of platforms and lots of powerups. There are three different game types in the multiplayer mode: Deathmatch, Survivor (think stock matches in SB), and Don’t Touch the Floor. The multiplayer is fun, but where the game really shines is in the challenge rooms. The challenge rooms are designed to make you use everything you know about the bionic arm. The correct path through the levels is not always clear, and finding the path through the level is generally as fun as getting through the level itself.
I haven’t played a whole lot of this game, but everything that I have played has been fantastic. I’ve beaten tough challenge rooms, defeated awesome bosses, and even won a few matches in the fun multiplayer modes. The only problem that I’ve encountered with the game so far is that it has the dreaded “HD Font Syndrome”. I can barely read the text on my 22″ (or so) SD TV. But that’s a small price to pay for a game that’s already so cheap.

I know what you mean with the HD Font problem… I hate that.
But I find that the load times are bad too..
All in all though, loving the game

I really don’t find the load times that bad. I played the demo of the 360 version and they were really bad, but it hasn’t been too bad for the full PSN version.

Knee high obstacles stopping me and inability to drop down platforms (while enemies can) just bugged me too much. Plus the demo was only 2 minutes of gameplay so it left a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

Hm…wouldn’t it make sense to make the HD font thing an option? I mean, it probably wouldn’t be much work.

The load times are longer than I figured they’d be, but they’re hardly game breaking.
Game looks great, sounds great, plays great. I get frustrated with it much like I did with the original, simply because it’s not always easy to time your grapples… But I’ve gotten better at it as I play more.
$10 is a steal for it. They amount of work that went into it is astounding and clearly evident. Co-op, challenge levels, etc.
Very happy with it.

Also, isn’t it hard to read *any* text on a TV that small? lol
It would be for me, at least.

I am loving this game. It stays true to the original, and the gameplay is spot on. This is going to be a great weekend.

This game is just too awesome. They manage to salvage all the good stuff from the original and add even more awesome stuff on it.

@Paroxym
I think if you stick with it, you’ll like it more. It’s just really different than most platformers, and until you get good, it feels limiting. After you get good, you’ll be busting out crazy stunts and stuff.
@Tony
Text from any game pre-this generation is readable on my TV with few exceptions (Baten Kaitos, FNR2 for PS2, etc.)

I guess I just have bad eyes
. Actually, I know I do.
That stinks, though. I’ve noticed Capcom is especially bad about it. Dead Rising, for example.

I’m really happy this turned out so well, I’ll be honest at a few points I had doubts and was worried, but man. Can’t wait to play it.

Two good things about the PC version; Font is readable no matter what quality your moniter is and you can get a really good game pad with a good D-Pad for not to much money.
True it’s $15 USD on PC, but the downloadable content will be free, while it will cost money on Live and PSN.

I was satisfied with this game a lot. Me and my buddy played all the way to the end of the game(we’re on the last level, but that’ll have to wait till next weekend). There are parts where it’s almost frustratingly hard. Anyone who has played level 11, and the boss on that stage, with two players, will know what I’m talking about.

Great re-make but not for european pc-gamers!
This is a poor business, can’t support this distribution policy with country restrictions and barriers for gamers with the capacity to pay.
