Alright, the Nintendo conference is over! Not quite as mindblowing as Microsoft’s conference, but a couple of interesting announcements.
- Animal Crossing: City Folk confirmed. Includes a City hub with a bunch of shops and player-run auctions. Also works with “Wii Speak” for online voice chat.
- WiiMotionPlus comes with the new Wii Sports Resort. Resort includes beach activities such as disc throw, jet skiing, and.. sword fighting!
- Wii Music comes out later this year. A music game where you don’t have to be a musician.
- Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars coming for DS.
- A new Guitar Hero DS coming out later this year.
- A version of Spore confirmed for DS.
Continue past the cut for our full liveblog of the event!

Arcanis - 07.15.08 12:33 pm
I take back what I said about Twitter… it rocks!
Cole - 07.15.08 12:41 pm
Oh come on Nintendo, I thought after that “_legendary_ classic franchises” line we were going to get something rad, not just more 3rd party garbage.
I mean, he set that Zelda announcement up perfectly.
Arcanis - 07.15.08 12:42 pm
Come ooon Mother3
Pedro - 07.15.08 12:43 pm
What do they mean by “Only Gaming Platform” with Will Wright’s spore? Do they mean only platform that can’t do media stuff like a PC?
Arcanis - 07.15.08 12:44 pm
I’m digging this GTA:CW and the extra functionality stuff for the DS.
Arcanis - 07.15.08 12:47 pm
Haha, this new Wii Sports game doesn’t look too bad.
Arcanis - 07.15.08 12:55 pm
Wii Music is pretty hilarious (in a good way), but I can’t help but sit here thinking about the people who complain about music games. People bitch about Rock Band, but at least you get controllers that look like the instruments in some fashion.
I play the saxophone, so watching someone lift up a remote and press buttons on it is kind of beyond ridiculous lol. I’d still try it
. Drums make a lot more sense.
Tony - 07.15.08 1:02 pm
Well that was interesting. I’m not let down, but I guess I’m not elated either lol
Some people are saying there’s some sort of evening conference where Nintendo will be showing more? Any truth to that?
Tony - 07.15.08 1:12 pm
Boring. Deceiving. Old news.
i_am_error - 07.15.08 1:14 pm
Man, am I the only who felt like that woman was all sorts of awkward to watch on stage?
It also seems to always feel like they set up a “hardcore” angle and then let the whole audience down. I wanted Zelda, or Kid Icarus, or…something other than the motion games they just claimed are not all there is to Wii.
Oh, and DS is apparently the new iPhone…?
Jimbles - 07.15.08 1:17 pm
That conference was terrible. No new information. Animal Crossing? Whoopdie doo. That was perhaps Nintendo’s worst yet.
D~N - 07.15.08 1:18 pm
That was just… laughably bad. Thanks for wasting my time, Nintendo! It’s okay, I still think I love you.
Shaun Hatton - 07.15.08 1:18 pm
I think im going to need to buy a balance board if the drums work well in wii music….
Ian - 07.15.08 1:23 pm
@Arcanis:
According to 1up, Spore Creatures will be the only non-PC release of a Spore related game this year. It certainly doesn’t seem as interesting as the normal Spore game on PC, though.
Tony - 07.15.08 1:24 pm
i think people are being way too harsh about this.
Jody Anthony - 07.15.08 1:25 pm
/v/ is in tatters.
Yaanu - 07.15.08 1:25 pm
Thanks Nintendo, for the most boring E3 Press Conference in years!!
Wii Music looks cool, but I have no interest in it. And Wii Sports Resort will be awesome and I’ll definitely pick it up, but I wish that there would be a “Wii Sports 2″ soon.
benny - 07.15.08 1:30 pm
Wii Sports Resort *is* Wii Sports 2.
Andrex - 07.15.08 1:34 pm
I have never facepalmed so hard in my entire life.
“Can’t voice chat in brawl or mario kart? no worries, hardcore gamers, you can do it in furryf@9 crossing now!!!!!!!”
“can’t play guitar hero because you suck? No problem, here’s wii music, it looks like ass, it plays like ass, but we’ll sell boatloads to your grandmother anyway!”
Nintendo just decided to be trolls this year at E3, I am sure they did this just to make /v/ rage.
Mik - 07.15.08 1:35 pm
Well, I’m sure any future game will have voice support. Or so I hope.
I just thought it was funny that they called it WiiSpeak. Anything they do has to have some name associated with it, even something as simple as online voice chat lol.
Tony - 07.15.08 1:38 pm
Dude, if I were the president of Nintendo, I would make would magic.
Pedro - 07.15.08 1:44 pm
I’m going to agree with JodyAnthony, it wasn’t fantastic but still not the worst thing ever.
Mik, leave your retarded attitude at *chan or never leave there at all. I don’t come to 4cr to hear people whine or talk about “rage”ing people.
Arcanis - 07.15.08 1:45 pm
Nothing announced appeals to me
Come on Nintendo! What are your in-house developers doing?! THREE games announced by Nintendo, the rest being third party…
It was an incredibly boring conference, they said the same crap last year (”OOOH look at all our sales”), showing the same crappy games (Nintendogs, Brain Age) appealing to the same shallow audience.
I didn’t expect much from Nintendo this year, all I really wanted to hear is a solution to the storage problem on the Wii… but it feels like they completly ignored the hardcore audience.
I would have thought Nintendo would have more sense knowing E3 is for “Geeks and Otaku” to appease the hardcore audience, are casual gamers really going to be watching E3, so why announce these games here?!
Ugh, to not be too harsh Wii MotionPlus looks good and has a lot of potential…
TK-Linx - 07.15.08 1:46 pm
Snore. Thanks for nothing Nintendo.
Howard Roark - 07.15.08 2:06 pm
Utterly disappointing. I thought they would totally revamp Animal Crossing, new graphics, more depth, better online. Instead we get the usual SLOW evolution of the franchise. There were no other big games either. Wii Music looks like a waste.. and I’m someone who bought and enjoys Wii Fit so I’m not against the casual. Of course these days Nintendo looks at E3 as a way to score points with the mainstream media and the fans are ignored.
Josh - 07.15.08 2:23 pm
@ANDREX:
No, Wii Sports 2 would be Hockey, Basketball, Football, etc.
Hell it could even Wii Sports 1 with more advanced controls or 1:1 movements.
They might as well call it Wii Sports: Sunshine.
benny - 07.15.08 2:28 pm
Yeah I mean it was nice to have things officially confirmed and everything but generally this E3 was in fact old news.
I mean Wii Sports Resort, is a sequel to basically a demo game that was free with our systems. Then you got Wii Music, which was demoed back when the Revolution was first unveiled, so basically they took nearly 2 years to make it official (but we all new they were going to do it). It’s sad just because they think it’s new news for E3 but it’s already been at E3 technically.
It just feels like all the E3 hype up was for nothing. I’m not even considering the 3rd party games at all since they are titles which had already been announced prior to E3.
As you can see all of E3 was pretty much old news, with the exception of the motion plus and wii speak (and I’m sorry motion plus was officially mentioned yesterday and I wanted to hear new things today).
Maverick - 07.15.08 4:09 pm
I think this was one of the worst conferences in E3 history.
Blue_Falcon - 07.15.08 4:10 pm
Mmm…swordfighting. They must have read what I was posting on the internets the other day.
9th Sage - 07.15.08 5:15 pm
I completely agree with about 99% of you. I was so looking forward to this year’s E3, but OMG it was HORRIBLE!!! All they had was that same old 3rd-party CRAP!!! Nintendo is starting to care too much about 80-year-olds and girls. Who cares what they think! And enough with the bar graphs Reggie! When it comes to Nintendo or even just their E3 press conference it should be focused on us young, male, first-party-game-loving, hardcore Nintendo gamers!!! Don’t you think so?
Gerudo Dragon - 07.15.08 6:26 pm
I hereby officially remove my support for the Wii. Bought it on day 1, and with the exception of Brawl, MP3, SMG, and RE4: Wii Edition, I’ve just been disappointed too many times now.
This was mentioned above, but all the stuff shown there was old news. Why the hell did it take about 2 years to create Wii Music? There’s just no excuse.
And WiiMotion…? They have the nerve to sell us something that should’ve been with the console (which we were led to believe) from day 1? That’s outrageous!
Come this fall, I’m getting a 360 and I’m only gonna focus on that. I’ve had enough of the “new” Nintendo.
Boot Guy Joe - 07.15.08 7:31 pm
*Note: DS is still awesome, however :-p
Boot Guy Joe - 07.15.08 8:17 pm
I could have used that luggage and restaurant info for the ds when I had to spend the night in the Detroit airport.
macy - 07.15.08 10:25 pm
sell your wii now!!!!!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

A number of games and accessories for Nintendo are intriguing but I have to say that this is the first year that I feel disappointed. None of the big three (Mario, Link, or Samus) made an appearance and I was surprised that Pikman was also MIA considering all the internet chatter that it had been receiving.
I wish they would have given more detail on the projects that the Mario & Zelda teams are working on.
MAL - 07.16.08 2:19 am
Major disappointment - not one ‘must have game’. I love the Wii and its potential, but I will be getting an XBox 360 now. I can’t wait any more for the likes of GTA and Halo.
Jack Wallington - 07.16.08 10:58 am
disappointing.
sack of joe - 07.17.08 9:56 pm
you people seem to be ignorant of the fact that nintendo usually does thier stuff secretly. Why give the competitors any ideas, so far many of the hardcore games were great maby some were a little easy and realeased to early but most came out as masterpieces like ssbb, metroid prime 3, zelda twilight princess, mario kart wii to count a few. the only thing about wii is that most companies arent giving wii a chance.
