It started in the usual manner. A rumor popped up on 2chan about a Chrono Trigger remake for DS. A picture even surfaced of a supposed leaked magazine scan. No real cause to get excited. How many times have we seen rumors of a Chrono resurrection? How hard is it to fake a magazine page with a Chrono Trigger logo? Exactly.
It’s slightly harder to fake a Square Enix website.
We know absolutely nothing about the game yet. Is it a new game? Is it a remake? Is it 2D or 3D? Will the old team be reunited? Heck, the game hasn’t even been officially announced. I guess we’ll just have to sit here and wait for that countdown to end.
I can easily say that I have never been so hyped for a game that we know so little about.

Crustifix - 07.02.08 3:55 am
It’s confirmed to be a port (with some extra’s here and there), not a 3D remake.
Dascu - 07.02.08 4:22 am
O_O!
I guess the countdown points to E3, I can’t wait!
DAGO - 07.02.08 4:42 am
There is no countdown, despite the page being titled “Countdown Site”, the clock simply tells the time.
If it is simply a port (or even if it isn’t) I hope they include the anime cutscenes from the PS1 version.

How about they retcon Chrono Cross and just make a sequel that doesn’t suck?
I mean… I can already play chrono trigger… On my DS… and on my PSP…
SELL ME SOMETHING I CAN’T EMULATE!
Mik - 07.02.08 7:28 am
this is just short of mother 3 coming to america, thank you greg, you’re a good man
Crass - 07.02.08 7:42 am
This justifies me buying a DS… !
oh wait, I thought it was for FFVI DS… xD
OMFGGGGG CHRONO TRIGGERRRRRRRRRRRRRR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
crescentsaber - 07.02.08 8:29 am
I love Chrono Trigger, but I want a bonus for not booting up the ol’ ZSNES/Snes9x.
Lain - 07.02.08 8:46 am
i could cry with joy!

This is the best news I have heard in a long while
Swhis - 07.02.08 9:40 am
Jesus. Megaman 9, now this. It’s like the latest news is catering to me.

evl - 07.02.08 11:18 am
My brother took my copy of Chrono Trigger for the DS, good news indeed.
Cheeseball701 - 07.02.08 12:02 pm
I meant to stay my SNES copy, not DS. As it happens, I don’t own a real time gate.
Heres a link to the press release:

Cheeseball701 - 07.02.08 12:08 pm
I love CT. I’ve beaten it over 50 times (and gotten every ending), and it is still the greatest RPG of all time. That being said, I hate ports, remakes, and stupid cop-outs for making new games. Either give me a sequel (Chrono Cross was pretty good, but nowhere near it’s predecessor), or leave it alone. Squeenix doesn’t try anymore because they don’t have to.

In a word, “omfgwtfpwnsome!”
RoboSheep - 07.02.08 1:15 pm
Awright! I’m going to get more royalty checks! The Master of War is back, baby!
Spekkio - 07.02.08 2:36 pm
w00t! I missed this on SNES and found the Playstation port to be really slow loading (disappointing, how could a SNES game be laggy on a Playstation?) so I’m looking forward to playing it without loadtimes
jgoreham - 07.02.08 3:31 pm
Words cannot describe how much I “DO WANT” this game with portable, play-on-the-go goodness. YES!
June - 07.02.08 3:33 pm
If it’s a port that’s just lame. Remaking it with the FF engine they’ve been using would’ve taken minimal effort, but a port even with added stuff is just a cop out so they can rake in even more cash off their fans.
peshue - 07.02.08 3:33 pm
@Peshue
I don’t like the way the FF DS games look. I MUCH prefer the delicious 2D sprites.
rbelmont - 07.02.08 3:40 pm
4cr, you guys should update this post. There is a press release making it quite clear that this is just a port with touch added for some touch-screen support (probably for menus), a new dungeon, and some sort of wireless stuff.
And of course the “old team” isn’t going to be reunited. Sakaguchi and Uematsu will never work with S-E again. Ever.
Cedge - 07.02.08 6:54 pm
alright, chrono trigger is one of those games that deserves a port to a new system every ten years or so just so that a new generation of people can play it and know just how much pure win they packed into that game.
overtninja - 07.02.08 7:47 pm
Some new Chrono game would be cooler, but as far as ports and remakes and stuff go, this is what most of us have been waiting for.
Baramos - 07.03.08 12:50 am
Biggest question of all time :
So what does the Naga-ette Bromide do !?!?!?!?
crescentsaber - 07.03.08 5:39 am
@CRESENTSABER
If you give it to a guy in San Dorino (600AD) some old guy will give you a Magic Tab for it.
I think the better question is: What the hell IS a Naga-ette Bromide?!
Jason - 07.03.08 8:37 am
erh since its found in the Cathedral then I think its something connected to weddings etc.. lol yeah I was so excited when I found it, but then I can’t find it on the items list @)#@)*()@#
Magic Tab huh ? meh =(
crescentsaber - 07.03.08 9:58 am
A bromide is a type of photograph. Apparently in Japan the word is often used to refer pictures of celebrities, regardless of if the photo uses the process that would classify it as a bromide, so it is probably a…nice picture of Naga-ette.
9th Sage - 07.03.08 12:47 pm
@9th Sage
Naga-ette papparazzi shots eh? That old dude in San Dorino needs help.
Jason - 07.03.08 7:14 pm
@Jason
He must really like ladies who are half snake.
That’s what I was thinking.
9th Sage - 07.03.08 11:04 pm
So. Pigs finally flew.
And I’m glad they did.
Because maybe. If this sells enough…
Chrono Brake?
DIEforKARMAsWING - 07.04.08 1:10 pm
I love Chrono Trigger as much as the next guy, but a DS remake is pretty yawntastic.
Steven - 07.04.08 2:43 pm
The greater significance in this event is the simple fact that SE is willing to retest the franchise’s waters. If they come to find that the fanbase has grown since sales dropped off, they will potentially mull over the possibilities of revitalizing the franchise. Kato, Mitsuda, and others have mentioned that they would be interested in reuniting for a new Chrono game, so this is a unique opportunity for the fan base to show SE that they are willing to pay for Chrono content, and further, newer Chrono content at that.
Petitions and remakes amount to little in the eyes of Square-Enix: sure, these people are loud about their love and support of the game, but have they all shown up to buy a copy? Unfortunately, the saying “money speaks louder than words” applies here. Here SE is opening the gates for these individuals and others to do so.
pyrosity - 07.04.08 4:23 pm
Holy crap. This better be real. I’ve been waiting forever for Chrono Trigger to come out on a handheld.
I just hope this isn’t some Chrono Cross crap.
Better make it good squeenix.
Emma - 07.05.08 9:52 pm
OMFG!! THE CLOCK IS TICKING!!
Fabio Ortolan - 07.05.08 11:35 pm
what they need to do is release this and then go back and make chrono cross not a shitty game and then release a new version of that. the story was pretty cool but some of the game choices were… questionable.
first off, the swallow sword is stupid. get that out.
second, the ‘you level up when you beat a boss’ mechanic was stupid.
third - magus needs to be in the game. ozzie, flea and slash were in chrono cross, but magus wasn’t. that is a fail.
fourth - 50 characters? orly? why not just have, you know, a roster of like 8 characters so you can actually feel justified in using most of them? that could work, right?
i dunno, that game was all kinds of flawed, and the loss of akira toriyama as the character designer kind of made the whole thing a loss. they need to get him and his goku-muscles all over whatever chrono sequal they make, if they do, so it looks right.
…swallow sword.
