We knew it was coming, a listing appeared on the Australian Office Of Film and Literature Classification’s website a few weeks back. In an interview in the latest issue of Nintendo Power, series creator Keiji Inafune confirmed that the latest entry in the classic sidescroller series is coming straight to WiiWare. Inti Creates is handling development duties, more or less confirming Kawano’s (Dead Rising, Mega Man ZX) involvement.
In an interesting twist, Mega Man 9 will return to the visual style and gameplay of the original NES entries in the series. In the interview, Inafune claims that this was to please long-time fans of the series. The difficulty level will also be on-par with the classic entries.
Dr. Wily is back and apparently blames Dr. Light for the Robot Master attacks. Rush will also make an appearance. Bosses for the new sequel include Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man, and Splash Woman (yes, woman). As usual, Mega Man will gain new powers from his vanquished foes (for instance, beating Galaxy Man gives you “black-hole bombs”). When asked if Protoman will be playable, Inafune was notably slippery.
No release date yet, but we’ll bring you all of the details as they emerge. Inafune said that he hopes that this entry will surpass Mega Man 2, which alone is enough to get me to “clean out the fridge” in anticipation for this game.

Wow…so it has the 8-Bit look? Wow…I hadn’t expected that, but now that I hear it, it really is kind of awesome.

Sweet, it’ll be a interesting change to play a retail game in this style and not indie releases.

Awesome, NES graphics without the blinking sprites (hopefully). Count me in.

I’m super impressed with this approach on Capcom’s part. Looking forward to the official press release from them.

This made my day.
…Wait. No. My year
Best news of 2008. I am extremely happy.
I thought the days of a real megaman game was gone, let alone a REAL real megaman game. I figured if they ever went back to the well for megaman, it’d be an X series type game, or a sidescrolling version with SNES type graphics, and gimmicks added.
This is the best news ever.

I’m glad Mega Man 9 is coming out, but what really makes me happy is the return of an old style.
Too many games “evolved” into lesser forms of what they once were or become far different their point of origin and fun value. ZX may be Mega Man, but it’s no Mega Man 2.
Hopefully other companies take this idea and run with it.
Classic Sonic the Hedgehog platforming, return of Bonk, Streets of Rage or Final Fight, Shinobi (2D Ninja king that Joe), and plenty of others could do it.

This is going to look really really good in 480p on my 50″ HD television. ahahaha, seriously this is an excellent decision though. It actually honestly is really fun to play NES games on a huge HDTV.

This is something to be ecstatic about.
I’m sorry but I’m glad they are going for the retro look…
Cause Megaman 7 and 8 were both crap, and don’t even get me started on Megaman Power Up or whatever.
Now if only they could make the next Megaman X9 game in the style (and sound) of Megaman X1-X3. I’m sorry but the pixelated look and feel did wonders for the games.

Also I’m hoping Megaman 9 will be designed and playable on a widescreen TV if it’s being made for WiiWare.

How come no likes Mega Man 8?

@Pedro
It’s probably because it’s the worst of the Classic series. But that doesn’t make it a bad game at all. A bad Mega Man game is still better than 3/4 the crap out there, I think.
That being said. I’M FREAKING EXCITED. WOOOO~

You know what would be cool? having the option to play in a somewhat “evolved” mode where enemies and Mega Man explode into hundreds of glowing embers, while retaining the 8-bit look of everything else.

I’m all for Mega Man 9–but I guess my views differ noticeably from the rest of you, because I have some reservations about a return to 8-bit graphics. :/ I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because I didn’t exactly grow up with them–I’m eighteen and so I’m pretty much one of the SNES/N64 generation–but yeah, I’m holding back all my excitement until I buy it (because I will) and see how awesome it really is.

Mega Man 9 on Wii looks so cool. I really dig the old school NES 8-bit look.
